Oh stop it---you have to give some of us a chance to get off work, deal with the family, and scratch the dog before we plop our plump A....s in front of the computer.
Now---I love the shots, Number two is especially appealing to me.
Nice work

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago

Me too. I tried to shoot Marine 1 on the weekend and had to crop a giant 5000x3000 200mm shot to about 2000 just to get it in full frame...

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
thanks guys..............and appologies if my comment seemed out of place......its just nice to get comments after taking the time to upload and post, not to mention the time that one takes to actualy shoot something for a couple hours.......and when one has pictures posted, and everytime i looked, my post was being pushed further and further down the list of posts......i was getting dejected
once again thanks for the kind words........and i love my 100-400 lens, its been on my camera 90% of the time since i got it off of kijiji over a month ago

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Love your shots Jim!
I saw your posts before, but I wanted to sort out my own photos of an airshow first and then post some and reply here.
Still haven't sorted them entirely, I guess I needed to do that faster [;)] Renting the 7D and very bad weather also resulted in some disappointment especially with sorting the photos...
Ill post some in here: Post your favorite airplane shots
Perhaps you can post a few there as well and we activate that topic again. I'm sure there will be others going to airshows this summer [:D]

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
i completely forgot about that string......i'll post a couple shots in there Jan. i just wish there were more airshows in ontario, not as many as there used to be......and our local warbirds are taking off for the summer airshow circuit......prob wont see them till the end of august now..........

I know...there's only 1 real airshow each year that I know off here in the Netherlands [:(]But I'm there every time! I could watch a good airshow anytime!
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Jim, are you coming down to the Canadian national airshow this summer? Know of any good spots? (That don't cost money!)
Mike
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
mike, i'm going to try and get down for that one, and no, i cant think of a good vantage point that is free, except maybe a boat [:P]. i've always liked the vantage point from ontario place, too bad nuthing is free anymore [:(].............actually, let me amend that, there is a free (donations accepted) airshow in brantford every sept 1st, i'm going to try and get to that one, even though it isnt on a weekend and i'll have to burn a vacation day, or sick day..........lol
jim
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
jim, you got a boat we could use? [:P]
this brantford airshow intrigues me. Off I go to Google!
Mike

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Huh? Do you guys need to pay to see an airshow? Or just if you want to take photos? I'm confused... [:P]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
We have to pay to get close unobstructed views because it is out over the water. I wish they'd blow up the countryside every year in a free show like you get [:P]

Oehhh that sounds awesome! Personally I would pay for an unobstructed view at a show above the water [A] I would love to see something like that!

Well yes it's not bad I guess [:P] we only need to pay for parking the car, but there are other ways to get there. I guess it's free because it's organized by the ministry of defense and officially it's a way to recruit new defense-personnel.. there are infostands everywhere and I used to collect every poster they gave away(they give away LOTS of stuff), but now I only come to see the planes and it's not bad [A] I think it's even named the most spectacular/biggest show in Europe, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Makes sense that the military is there. I'm actually considering applying for a part-time job with the Canadian forces as an Imaging Tech. Taking photos and shooting video and stuff... though I don't think my girlfriend would like that very much[:p]
I would pay too, but its way too over-priced and that cuts out of my lens rental budget...

Do it! Do it! Do it! That would be amazing! And perhaps you get the chance to fly with one of the planes/heli's sometime [A] "for the sake of a photo".

Hmm seriously is it that expensive? I had to pay 60 euro for rentals this year. 100-400 was 20 euro and 7D 35 euro, add insurance and it totaled at 60 euro. Not cheap, but it's worth it [A]

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
I really wanna... Maybe I can go on a duty tour to the Netherlands[;)]
It's 75$ (55euro) for a 300mm 2.8 for the weekend or $150 (112euro) for the 400mm 2.8 for the weekend. Plus a 60% deposit of the value of the lens... Sigh. If you mail me your credit card then I can show you![A]

I meant the entrance fee [:P] But those prices are pretty much the same here. I only rented for 1 day since the rental place was 10km away from the airbase. By the way, do you really need an f2.8 lens? The 300mm I will say is not too heavy to handhold whole day, but I think with the 400mm prime you'd like a good tripod or monopod.
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
The entrance fee is $95 dollars (70 euro) and unforunately it's the same rate for a weekend or one day and I don't know of a place that will rent the 300mm f/4.0 for a day. I only know of a place that would rent it to you for a week.
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
WOW! Now I get your point...
And what about the 100-400? Or the new 70-200 with 1.4 extender?
By the way: you must get quite some show for that amount of money [:O]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Doubt it. They've been cutting back huge since 9/1. Unfortuantely I haven't been in many many years so I can't testify to this, but I haven't heard of it being "Amazing".
The 100-400 is not that bad to rent for a day but once again it's still the cost of entrance, the lens and the deposit for the lens...
I just don't have the money or justification to spend it on that [:(]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
I wouldn't do it myself either unless I would know that it was truly spectacular! And even then the costs had to be justifiable by some sort of way. But nah...200 dollar for an airshow...hard to justify [:(]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
jan........at a lot of our airshows (not that many anymore, unfortunatly) they make you pay a fee to get in, but usually its not that much, and when ever i go up to the local airport, hamilton, i will gladly pay whatever they ask, mostly because it is for the canadian warplane heritage, a non profit flying museum......they own one of only 2 airworthy lancasters ($C2000 if you want a flight in it [:P]), 0ne of only 3 airworthy fairey fireflys, a bunch of old trainers, a consolidated PBY canso flying boat, a hawker sea fury, a lysander, and a whole wack of non airworthy ex canadian airforce jets......they used to have an airworthy hurricane (lost in a hanger fire, they saved the lancaster[:D]) and an airworthy corsiar (sold it for some strange reason [:S][:'(][:@])
mike..........if you want to be a photo tech in the canadian military, thats an airforce trade......and the closest airforce base is now borden, since they closed downsview......and i am not 100% sure you can be a photo tech reservist........i could be wrong........and i used to be in the airforce[;)]..........i was a CF-18 airframe tech. hence my soft spot for aircraft of any type [:P]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Good to hear the canso is still flying. I love that aircraft. I remember when they sold the corsair! I was so angry!
I haven't dug too deep into the website yet, but from what I gathered it seems like it could be a reservist trade. I'll have to double check it. I'll get some friends to look into it for me who are in the forces. What rank were you? Haha, my dad flew as a hobby and I did a few lessons many years ago, and absolutely loved aircraft since I was a little kid.[:p]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
I think all your shots are fantastic, Jim. I have a airshow coming my way I think next month so I'm learning from what you have going here! I hope I can make ours and bring my 100-400mm as well!
Denise

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
I just realized that the airshow ticket price includes admission to the ex as well. Depending on the entrance price of the x by itself it may be worth it... I'll have to look into this. But I'm very interested in going to the Brantford Airshow that you mentioned Jim

I'm jealous [:P] I always wanted to be a fighter-plane pilot (who doesn't?), but my slight colorblindness was a definite dealbreaker, while you can even have glasses and still apply for tests to become a pilot [:(] Therefor I went to study aeronautical engineering, it opened my view for commercial airplanes a bit, but I still didn't like it...too boring!(my heart is not with the commercial planes....) Nowadays I'm doing something totally different, but I still got a soft spot for aircrafts[A]
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
Alright lets do this! *Take off* Okay now lets sit here for the 12hr flight! ... Haha
Looks like you did see the other one! Bomb bay doors open too. With the demonstrations you guys have over there I'm surprised I don't see some miniature bombs heading right for your head![:P]

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
jan........nice shots of the brit lanc [:P], too bad they cant meet up one year and do a killer fly by somewhere, 2 lancs, couple hurricanes, bunch of spits, and hell, throw in some mustangs......imagine the sound of all those merlins...........[:O][:D]......"By the way: you must get quite some show for that amount of money" one year we did have quite a show, it was years ago, cant remember how long, an RAF nimrod crashed into the lake during the airshow........
denise......if you're going to go to that airshow, i would suggest looking for bryans tips on shooting airshow pictures......i read it, and it helped me a lot, i was way rusty from not going to one in years. and definatly take your 100-400, and maybe a short zoom (cant remember off the of me head what you have), you may not use the full 400mm, but you will definatly appreciate the reach. i have some shots of trainers where you can see the passenger taking pictures of us [:P]
mike.........cant you get us in with your CBC creds??? [:D]lol.........i could be your assistant..........[H].........i'd have to try out your 7D though, in exchange for letting you try my 100-400......or 70-200f/4 & 1.4tc..........[;)]

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
That'd be like a WWII superiority show. Imagine the crowd they'd pull in for that.
I wish it were that simple... I'm contemplating renting a 100-400 for the show. I talked my girlfriend into going to it today[:)]

Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
thought i would add another shot........let me know what you think of this shot [:D] shot with 100-400 again, at 100mm, f/10, 1/250s and iso200

Hmm I guess that tops me [:P] To be honest I don't know if I want to see a crash, I think they'll be even more careful afterwards and cutting in expenses...making the one show I go to worse...that can't happen! [;)]

Cool photo Jim! Love the angle and the background element is welcome as well [:D] Were you lucky with standing so close behind the plane or did you pull some strings for this shot?

was all luck jan.......just happened to be behind it when she started up, good thing it was only a trainer and not something with 1000+ horsepower.....that woulda just been dangerous[:P]

thanks jan, i love angles like this on aircraft on the tarmac, especially old warbirds that are tail-sitters (dont think a tricycle gear plane would have the proper effect), especially when i get my DOF correct, and by the background elements, do you mean the big honking radar in the background?? i love that its there[:)] gives something a little different to the picture

Me too, I don't think it would work with tricycles either. That's the beauty of tail-sitters!

Yep it definitely works for me! I thought it was a water-supply or something, anyway I like it [:D]
I must say 1 thing I only noticed now is that your horizon is off angle. So the tower is also standing angled. Is it on purpose or would it get even better if you changed this?
Jan
-
Re: more warbird shots from a week ago
jan.........i know the horizon and ASR are a little off level, i wanted the trainer level, at the expense of the background. when i try'd to compose with the background horizon and ASR level, the plane just didnt look right. guess thats what happens when you're on an uneven tarmac area, but then again, i do not know of even a level runway either [:P]
mike........yeah, that wouldnt have been good, dont wreck my 100-400.......me? who cares, i heal, but my camera and lens......no way......lol[:P]

So I guess your next set will be of another person getting your shot with you in crutches and your shattered 100-400 in your hand with you crying?

Yeah I was afraid for that to happen. Well it does'nt bother me enough in this shot, so I think you made a good choice. Looking forward for more airplanesphotos this summer [:D]
