I know most of you use Photoshop or Lightroom but I was wondering if anyone has tried ACDSee Pro 3. I just downloaded the free trial and have only played around with it for alittle while but from what I see so far I kind of like it.
Just wondering if you have tried it what your opinions are.

Anyway, I never heard of the program so I looked on their site. It looks a lot like Lightroom(even the price) and I don't see any real benefits to it yet. It's not exiting enough for me to try it out, since I kind of like Lightroom and the linkage with Photoshop and other programs like Photomatix.
But Denise, if it shows to be very nice and if it offers something great, please notify and I'll check it out [:D]

Speaking of free, did you ever try Gimp?
It looks pretty powerful and is free. Ive tried it but my brain is programmed for PS so I did not try it long enough to get the hang of it.

A friend of mine, who is a wedding pro, uses it just for resizing & renaming. I find that I can accomplish those tasks just as easily in LR3.
I use ACDSee to view my photos right after downloading to the computer. He gives me a quick viewing platform with large images. I can delete the bad ones immediately and make notes on any that I may want to print.
I use Photoshop for my printing needs, but I put ACDSee on my right hand screen so that I can easily find a picture I want to work in Photoshop. The only problem with that is that ACDSee has to be close before you can save an image out of Photoshop.
The program also gives me a rapid way to find pictures that I have shot in the past.
I also configured the program to print all pictures that I have marked in the 4 x 6 format with the filename and the date printed on the picture in the border. This could be set up for any size of picture up to 8 x 10 on my printer.
I have noticed that prints from this program are a little darker than what I get from Photoshop off of my monitor.
As you can tell I think is a great program and well worth the money.

George, the selections where you talk about could be improved in Lightroom. However Lightroom doesn't need to be closed when combining it with Photoshop. It actually works very well together.

Ps: have you compared prints from both programs? Of have you just compared prints to the monitor. You might be working in different color-profiles.
I really like a great deal of the features of this program ...except numerous times about 1/2 way thru editing a photo it crashes on me :(
Also, once I do make it thru editing and then go to view mode ...it doesn
Oh...good and bad things so far.
Number 1 could be your pc...doesn't have to be the program.
Number 2 is definitely not good though...

Actually I was an ACDSee fan beginning from versions 1 to 9 skipping versions in between - until I met Lightroom, a match made in heaven - LOL.
Seriously, I found ACDSee to be very gimmicky, not user friendly and yes it would crash during an edit. Like other software out there, I find it very bloated and in my experience with said product it does a much better job of managing your library than an image editing solution in itself.
IMHO - I would avoid it where possible though I would rate it a 6 out of 10.

I think I am going to take the leap and get both Lightroom & PS and toss alot of the pther programs I have. Maybe once I view alot of the online tutorials, things will fall into place.
As far as going Mac, not an option at this stage of the game after just buying windows 7 and a number of other things to upgrade what I have.

To bad you're not in Europe though. Adobe Europe gives Students and Teachers great deals if you buy Lightroom + another program or pack. Valid till 10th of April. It's in the online Adobe store.
There might also be such a thing in the Adobe US department. I'd suggest you to check it out.

Ps: on the Adobe shop you get a downloadable version. I'm not sure what Amazon does, but a download gives you instant acces and you can't break it, so I personally prefer it. Obviously it can't be sold later on. That's the downside. A hard copy like a CD/DVD can be sold later on.
Photoshop Extended and Lightroom 3. Not quite sure what the "Extended" means.

You'll need to send them a copy of the Student ID. If there is no date on the ID (or if it's not current) they'll want a transcript or class schedule to prove current enrollment.

Thanks for the info, David! I cancelled my order. All she currently has is the student ID #. It will have to wait until the "process" moves further along.

Denise, out of curiosity, did you find a single item "Photoshop CS5 Extended + Lightroom 3", or did you add two items to your cart? I can't see anywhere that such a bundle exists. I know for non-educational they're promoting bundles of both, but I haven't seen anything for the educational versions.
If you added both as separate items, Adobe will likely refused you second key, until the next year. If it's a bundle, I'm not sure. The way they word it is unclear.

Hmm I get your point David. The weird thing is that they do offer price-reductions if you buy Lightroom + another Adobe product...in the Student and Educator part of the Shop. So that would incline that you could use them both I think(at least that seems very logical). However the sentence you quotes makes it look otherwise.
I thought it was only one copy of everything Adobe is currently offering, but not two of any one specific item. This is worse than cropping when you start over-thinking things. I still don

It would mean you can buy one license for each different program per year. You couldn't buy multiple suites because you would end up with more than one license of the same program.
One of my sons is taking classes in adobe in college. He has multiple classes a year using Pro, or Illustrator or whatever. It wouldn't make sense to limit students to one program a year when they have to take several to get degrees.
Lightroom is not bundled in the suites. You can add it to the suites at a discount. Unless they have changed this in the last few months.
Early on, LR3 was bundled with CS5 but only for a limited time. Now they have a deal where you buy the two on the same ticket and save 30% on LR3. It

This is how I take it ...
I think you can get one copy of each program for as many programs as you want. And I think, PS and Lightroom are considered two programs and do not come as a bundle, just a discounted price if you buy both. When I put them in my cart on Amazon, they came up as two seperate items.
Lightroom takes the place of using DPP, right? So, all a person should need is DPP & PS or Lightroom & PS, correct? You would be amazed at how many photo-editing programs I have on my computer and only know about 25% of what each one can really do! But each one does alittle something that the others don't that I like! It's time to narrow it down and stop confusing myself and my computer ...but I like DPP ...and DxO Optics ...oh, and maybe the new version of ACDSee Pro and OMG here I go!
It will be quite awhile before I (I mean she) can get student pricing so until then maybe Lightroom will allow me another free trial and I can try to break away from DPP?
