Apologies for posting the same pic twice but I got Adobe Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 running on the Macbook Pro last night. Aperture didn't give me any warm and fuzzy feelings in it's ability as an image editor so I've gone back to Adobe - I'm much happier.
So I got the same pic out and had another go at an edit - I must say I'm out of practice in the editing department. Has been far too long. Anyway here's the new edit:

So which one do you guys like better? I feel like I've blown out the highlights in the yellow a bit too much in the new edit and need to bump up the saturation slightly in the reds/oranges as well because in all honestly it's probably less vibrant in this pic than it was in real life.
Thanks for looking! Ben.
I'm undecided, they are both great in slightly different ways. The new one has more pop, and I like the reds and more natural tones in the older one
Ben,
have you considered using Photoshop as an external Editor for Aperture? I'm curious how that works.
I did but there's still a lot of functionality aperture doesn't have that I really like about Lightroom. Two big ones for me that I use often in Lightroom are the graduated filter and noise reduction.
I'm certain it's possible because most of adobe's products are compatible with apple products (e.g. Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro X work well together) but I'm using a bunch of Adobe products so I'm going to keep it all under the one roof so to speak.
Ben, I am partial to the new one. I am not sure if it would do anything to help your processing, but have you ever tried LAB color boosting your photos? I just was playing around with this the other day and was very impressed at what a little work with it can do. These are 1.straight from camera, 2.boosted in lightroom, 3.then LAB boost in photoshop. Not the best picture and I may have went over the top with the color (probably should have changed the layer opacity), but I liked the way it popped. If you are adding saturation or vibrance alone, the fine details are totally screwed up.

Haven't played with that Jayson but it looks like it could work nicely. I'll have a play when I get home. Cheers!

Ben, that is a really nice capture. For my $.02, I like parts of both. I like the hotter and almost yellow region around the sun in the first and the fact that you were able to bring out some shadow detail in the foreground rocks. I like the blue sky better in the second one. It looks more natural. I guess I am not a fan of the tendency to boost the saturation of skies. That being said, this is art and its personal preference.

Great shots in this thread. Have been busy for a while and it's nice to see all the great shots made in the meantime.
A few shots from a little more than a week ago. I tried out the new blurring-tools from CS6 for the first one.

Out here it is "larch season", where the larch trees turn golden before losing their needles (I believe they are the only conifers to do this). Larches can typically be found above 2000 metres elevation in the mountains, and one of the best places to view them is at the Sunshine ski area near Banff. A shuttle bus takes you up there, and you can then wander the myriad of trails. It's hard to believe that ski season begins in about 6 weeks!

Great shots on this page, Pat, Jan and Jonathan.
I would love to visit Banff. You should get a job with the Tourism department Jonathan.
Jan, how do you like the blurring tools?
I like the shot, but the blur looks a bit unreal somehow.
Jan, it's great that you're finding time to take and share your pictures again. I like the simple silhouette of the tree best. The blurred effect is interesting, too. I agree with others that it's not too realistic, but it still appeals to me. I might have cropped it with the log closer to the bottom edge of the frame, as I think the foreground is a little too dominant.
Jonathan, you're blessed with some fantastic scenery and the talent and dedication to do justice to it. I always enjoy looking at your images here and on your site.
Pat, good job on the waterfalls with the motion blur emphasised by the pin-sharp surroundings.
This shot doesn't compete technically, as it was taken in low light, handheld at 1/20s with a G12 point-and-shoot, but it was a change of scenery for me as I was away from home on a course in Windsor. You can just make out the statue of King George III on horseback on the horizon, 2½ miles away.

Thanks Larry, in all honesty I agree 100%. I also prefer the tones in the blue sky in the original - definitely looks more natural. Just couldn't replicate it the second time around so I pretty much gave up... slack I know!
Don't be afraid to give constructive criticism around here mate, that's exactly what I was after!
Cheers.
Ben.
Sometimes it's as though I'm not even there. Do i make a difference? Nahhh.

Great idea and execution Steve. Really like this shot.

Good one Steve.
A few more from the Arizona wedding. We spent 3-4 days on wedding activities (my wife's brother's wedding) and I had one day to do what I wanted. So we were off to Sedona, Arizona. A few pics of the area:

Thanks for viewing...Brant
Those are all great Brant, but the first one just has something special to it. Thanks for sharing!
Wow Brant, those are brilliant! Hard for me to pick a favourite... I'll take the last three then
Brant, you just made me want to go to Arizona
Thanks everyone. Glad you like the shots. Sedona is a beautiful place.
Arnt...funny you should mention. My wife and I were a little bummed at only have 3/4 of a day in Sedona so on the drive back we essentially planned our next trip. Not that I know when it would happen, but using Sedona as a base (good hotels/restuarants), do Sedona, day trip to Havasu Falls and the Grand Canyon. Then move further north and use this as a base (http://www.monumentvalleyview.com/), do Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and maybe the Wave (need permit/hike/etc).
I've always wanted to do the southern Utah trip (Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonland National Parks, etc), but I can see also the AZ trip. Beautiful area.
Nicely done Brant. Makes me envious... I have never been to Arizona, but have been wanting to go.
We are on our yearly autumn trip to the Upper Peninsula. Here are a couple from a sunrise.

Sensational shots guys.
Brant superb shots from Arizona, that second last one, the light on the range is just sublime, thanks for sharing.
Pat, that first one, the glow on the water, the colours and detail of the trees and the sky, well........excellent.
Thank you Steve... I appreciate the kind words.
Cool shot, Steve. Nicely done.
Great shots, Brant. I'd need a half dozen new CF cards if I lived in AZ. So many great views out there.
Man, there is a slew of great shots posted on this link! Mckw, your southwest US images especially False Kiva sing to me.
I really liked the way the clouds set up here in the California foothills. If you squint hard enough or have another drink or two, it seems like the clouds are part of another world up there. Enjoy, Erno

Erno - The golden field leads you to the hill & trees, and then the hill & trees point up to that great sky. Really well composed... it all comes together well.
Great shot, erno. Looks like an African safari shot.
Enro....amazing shot....
Steve and Mark...thanks...glad you like the shots....
Today I got the chance to try my latest investment for the first time, a B+W ND110. I went to my most photographed place by the shore and tried a few different compositions of water and rocks in the foreground. This 15 second exposure at f/8 is my favorite from today.

Really like the blurred meeting at the horizon, it makes you look into the image and back again
+1. It reminds me of a cloud inversion when you can see mountain summits poking up through a sea of cloud in the valleys. It also reminds me that I need a ten stop ND filter.
I took a short break to the west coast of Scotland last week and the weather co-operated with my plans. Here are some of the results...
