Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Blended 2 long exposure images together to get this one. I went out at 12 am'ish and left the lake to come back home at 5:30am.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Gregg I used Photomatix for these images and applied some filters and adjustments in PS. Noise is typically a big problem with my HDR but my PS filters do a great job to smooth and sharpen the image. In fact the noise is eliminated and the images usually end up tack sharp. You need this when you shoot ISO 400 on a $100 tripod in low light. Boardwalks tend to move and vibrate quite a bit too.
I still over-process my images but something that helps to keep me grounded is to have the original image open as a reference. Oh, and a wife that walks passed and says "ooo..that looks fake!" (A spouse can be your most honest critic making for a valuable photography accessory [:D] )
I have tried BW Gregg but failed miserably, including an attempt during this shoot. I am very interested in BW and hope to eventually post some nice pictures when I have got my skills up to scratch.
It must have been cool shooting the Colosseum, I'd love to travel to some of these locations.
@ Bryan. Did you just mask along the horizon then place the two exposures top and bottom with a little bit of brush work on the mask to reveal some light or dark areas?
-
Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Yes I did use 2 layers, sky on top and vegetation on the bottom. I then just went in with the large sized eraser brush with a soft edge and swiped it across the lower portion. The 2 images where not extremely different from each other so the effect is subtle and what I think looks more natural.
From what I've grasped from online reading is the image stacking solution would not be the suitable tool to use here because the sky was changing, boats flying by in the background with light trails, reflections in the water changing from the different sky situations with the clouds and the moon, and then the waves moving the plants in the water. This may not be my best scene photographed to date but its fun playing with the bulb setting.
The RC-6 remote is a nice little tool to use with the bulb feature as you have to have something to trigger it. I left mine at home on accident this night and had to drive all the way back to get it. I do this nonsense all the time where one time not long ago I had to turn around and drive 4 hours to get my rotator head for my 360 VR panoramas for an out of town job in the morning.
Also worth mentioning I did some painting with light here to help the vegetation to show up better. I carry a big rechargeable light around with me where I was using it for basic lighting needs but then I remembered to use it to help bring the dark foreground up and add some color. It was still dark out when I recorded this image and there was no other light besides the moon. I found out that the sweet spot for my longer exposure seems to be under 20 minutes where the longer ones got pretty grainy.
On a side note I'm pretty satisfied with DDP's handling of noise. When I got home and pulled up some of the longer exposures without the use of in camera noise reduction I was thinking there would be no way to use most of these images but with the RAW tools I was able to make a huge difference and not loose image detail.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Not bad at all FastGlass, did you do the PP for him?
Gregg I remember I actually do have a HDR BW but it's not to the level I would like my HDR BW to be (but it's all I have so far). Please post your Best BW HDR shots, I'm keen to see what you or other people have achieved.

@ Bryan, good idea painting with light. I saw this technique in an old photograhpy book from the 60's where the author walked through a garden with a flashgun and illuminated things like statues and hedges. I tried it once on an old bridge and lit each pillar. It's pretty cool when you can walk through the image during long exposure without being captured on the sensor.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Yes I did do the PP for him. Of course using DxO

Bryan, Great shot and.... it really motivates me to break out my 10-22------beyond the HDR exposure, you did a great job controlling the lens distortion---please tell us how you managed this, crop, software, or just well framed?
Thanks,

<span style="font-size: medium;"]Wow, Thanks a lot Bob. In general, I find the 10-22 to be fairly forgiving in terms of distortion. For this shot in particular, first, it was shot at 22 mm, so obviously less distortion than if it would have been shot wider. Then, I enabled lens corrections in Lightroom. After creating the HDR in Photoshop CS5, I corrected perspective via skew adjustments. Then finally cropped out the right side of the image where the edge of the taller building in the background was still a little too skewed from vertical.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
You can see the big improvement in the overall image BK. I would say that the HDR process you are using is working well and suites the name High Dynamic Range well.
As far as logos, names and copyright info on photos used on the web I don't see the need for it where all images no matter what are protected. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 all work on the web is copyrighted automatically by the person who created it, made it, or photographed it. There are no exceptions. If you find someone using your photo or work and you did not provide permission for them to copy or use it then you can sue them and you will win. No need to file a copyright unless you just really want to. I know this and got more informed on this matter because I was contacted by the almighty Getty Images and told that I had done copyright infringement on an almost worthless image the size of a silicon computer chip that I grabbed from yahoo images six years ago and used on the directions page of a website. If someone wants to use your image illegally then more power to them but if you do catch them then you will collect a reasonable amount for your effort if you pursue the matter.
If you want you could buy reasonable priced software and search the web for any image created by you and then sit back and let the money come to you. That is if your images are being used by people that have something to loose.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
What HDR software are you using guys? I have tried Photomatix and am quite impressed by the affect, there are a few quirks but nothing bad. The biggest problem is the very bright highlight are hard to hold in photomatix, I managed to hold them but had to go through DxO and increase the contrast. But those are only for very extreme highlights. Also something more tweakable so I can get some extreme HDR

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Normally I use Photomatix for all my HDRs but for some reason, for the below picture, it just didn't work took well. Instead, this was processed with Adobe's Merge To HDR in Photoshop.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
John, you really should try HDR Efex from Nik software. It is what I use. You can get the very normal looking hdr, or you can tweak to your hearts content, and go wild!! Try the 15 day trial version, and see if you like it. It also has a Tone mapping feature for single shots, which I find works really really well!!

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Fantastic shot , William. I really like it. Can I offer up a suggestion, though? Take this photo,as an HDR, and import it into either LR or PS, and convert to BW...then play with the color channels....specifically, red, green and yellow, and see what you come up with...I'm not saying it would be better, but I think it will be a great BW shot, IMHO...

Thanks Gregg. I actually tried a BW version before posting the color, didn't like it. The best I could do was a gradient map in PS. But your suggestion made me have another go and this is a Light Room attempt. I think this image is starting to gain a little traction...

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Those lights are just results of the lens used. I would have had a perfect stay except for a run in with a supposed person in need of help. I felt for the guy where he wasted my valuable time, gas and money. Last time I try to help someone, seriously. Pretty much every person in one of these situations is full of shit. This clean cut, mid thirtys individual bought drugs with the money that I gave him and this was all done in front of me while I was in my car waiting for him. I ran after the guy almost catching him at one point buy his shirt but then hit that out of shape wall and started to stumble and could not continue. I then got insulted by the infamous Memphis TN police that came to take my report which never got taken because they did not feel that it was worthy. What a day.
A lot of this picture is about timing and the quality image that the 5DII can produce. All the pics I took form this hotel are coming out better then I could wished and thanks for the kind words.
Business center photo that came out nice too.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
There is no way to know who has the evil intentions and who really needs help. The more and more that I see these things and hear about other circumstances the more protective I need to become. There is a huge risk of letting strangers approach you and enter your safety space as so many of them do. In the future I'm just going to be much more careful and not allow strange people to approach me. There are acceptable situations to help others like through a church or through friendship being earned over time or even through other people who have relationships with people in need. I am upset at myself for allowing this person to manipulate me and I am disgusted at his attempts to decieve me. The true blessing that I eventually realized and came away with (thanks mom) is that this guy was lucky to get away from me as I might have seriously hurt him or even in the heat of battle killed him or injured or gotten killed myself. Its no joke when the adrenaline is flowing and its easy to forget when enough is enough. By the way the police where acting with me this day just trying to file the report I could have easily been arrested and received an assault charge just for tackling the guy let alone the punching that would have happened. It just boils down to the fact that there no way to tell someone's intentions even if they look nice, deserving and in need. Its way safer and better for society for them to seek professional help through governmental, charities or local organizations as they are out there. What in actuality I did was provide this guy another means of getting drugs which he is going to continue to do until he is stopped. Everytime someone gives money to this guy they are promoting his actions and contributing to the destruction of his life. Enough said.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
I know of a bloke in Iquique, Chile, who deals with this situation on a regular basis. He'll offer to buy them some food, the response he gets helps him to quickly discern if they are in need or not.
They are trying to pass what's called a "Good Samaritan" law here in Australia, where it will become illegal to ignore someone in need. If someone say, collapses, or is assaulted etc you may face charges under this law if you walk on by. Not the same situation as you had, obviously, but it made me think about the reason why people don't help out, and I think it is because they are afraid for their own safety and also from passed experience where the need has been fanned. I won't go into why I think this is a stupid law but suffice to say it was an interesting thought topic about human nature. Anyway.... I'm sure nothing will make your blood boil more than watching someone spend your hard earned money on drugs after you just tried to help them.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
Hi Ryan, what software did you use. They are nice shots but they have a dark smokey quality that I also struggle with in my HDR. I use Photomatix. Your first one has more "Smoke" and the 2nd one struggles with Halos around the buildings. If you look at FreelanceShots HDR images he avoids this by doing HDR maunally in Photoshop.
Nah, I think it was already broke, I find that it does all sorts of crazy things for me too. [:)]

Well, Had a bit of success with it... but first the failure. [:)]
I first tried exporting all five from lightroom without an edit at all. I knew that the images wouldn't line up because of moon drifting, etc. I had hoped that HDR Efex would be able to align the images without much effort on my part. I was wrong.

Okay.. so round two. I applied a crop in Lightroom, I then "copied" the crop and pasted to the other frames so that the size of the moon would be consistent in all five frames. After which I painstakingly switched back and forth between frames nudging the moon a little bit in all directions until they looked to be nearly identical. After which I exported again.. and HDR Efex had no issues aligning this time. I think it turned out pretty well. Have more detail than I usually do using my 400mm.
I should also mention that this was five different exposures as well. No faux HDR for this guy.

Re: Post Your Best HDR Photo
La Quinta is advertising on this site currently. Here is one of their hotels rooms that I recently shot. Our rules/guidelines have us shooting the rooms during the day so mixed light is always an issue. With this guest room as well as the others rooms I was not able to switch out their bulbs for our specific ultra low watt bulbs which always hampers the overall look when this situation arises.
The mention of the Rokinson lenses has me thinking if the 14mm FE14M-C lens would be an alternative to the Canon 14mm. I already have the recommended PT Lens software but I hear that this lens is weak in the optical department but then I hear its amazing. I'm not super impressed by the 16-35 when zoomed in tight so I don't want to take a step backwards with a new purchase.
5D2, 16-35mm II, f/10, shutter 1/8, ISO 200 This is a blend of 6 images plus a window mask. My window mask could be more apparent but there is a fine line between it looking fake and natural where I think I could go a little more. There is some detail in mine where otherwise that window would be total white with no information recorded including around the draps.
