Post your best bird shots!

I didn't know if you had more room on the right or not. Adding canvas in photoshop is tricky. If you added canvas on the right I would only crop close to the snow puff on the left. I would not want to lose any of that feature.

Anyway it's a great pic. I wish I had access to Bald Eagles more easily. The Chikat Eagle Reserve is on my bucket list.

I gave a thought to expanding the canvas to the right, but decided not to...I thought the subject matter was worth breaking the rule of 3rds.

That has to be one of the finest ABE photos I've seen. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, in your case I think it may be worth two thousand words.

Now a few dumb questions from a beginner, what lens were you using and what the heck is the eagle carrying?

Equipment; 5DMK3, 500mm f4 ver1 with a 1.4x attached. Food; a piece of uncooked roaster chicken.

There is a gentleman (avid birder) that picks up meats that can't be sold or used any longer from a local super market and puts the meats out in his field......he has over 200 acres, so his neighbors don't mind. :)

Sorry...I will try again...and I agree the image is very strong and the rule of thirds is not mandatory....I thought it might be even stronger with a little "space" for the bird to fly into (this is quickie attempt and not perfect but gives the idea)

Even though I have barely been shooting lately, so I feel bad making a comment on the page, are you sure (EricPvpi2) that it's not a juvenile Cooper's Hawk? The long yellow legs and lightly streaked breast are a dead give-away, not to mention the prey item. Nice shot either way!

It could be and I appreciate the feedback. I am not sure I have heard about Cooper's Hawk. I know we have Red Tailed in the area, so I was looking at various pictures to verify. It looked like some pictures I viewed, but not others. But definitely real close to what I see for Cooper's Hawk. Thanks for helping identify!

They come by the house every once in a while, but this one hung out for a while with his catch, really neat to see.

I'll agree w/dsiegel on your hawk ID Eric, but I'll add there is a possibility of it being a Sharp-shinned hawk also. It's really tough to differentiate a Cooper's from a Sharp-shinned, but in today's world, the Cooper's is far more common.

Yeah, when I co-teach ornithology with a friend of mine, he just calls them Cooper-shinned Hawks.

It is tough to tell the Sharp Shinned from the Coopers but the Sharp Shinned is smaller and doesn't usually have the gray banding on the tail as prominently as the Coopers.....I think your pic may well be a Sharp Shinned Hawk....they love to eat birds too.

I often wonder where the term bird brain came from, because many of them are not stupid. A Sulphur-crested Cockatoo can take a peanut out of the shell and strip the skin very quickly.

Great Bald Eagle shots Bill! I have found myself wishing for some focal length this week as they were in our area. 420mm just doesn't cut it most of the time. We had some expert fisherman tackling a lake a little ways down the road so I thought I would stop by for an hour or so. Here is what I came out with.

Nice shot Joel. I like how there is some vignetting to emphasize the subject, is this post processing or just exaggerating the already present vignetting of the lens?

Thanks John.....I used a filter in Nik Color Efex Pro that allows you to lighten the center and darken around the edges. It also allows you to position the lightened area and control it's size. It's a little different than just a vignette.
