Nice capture of the Cooper's (?) this and the Sharp shinned are difficult birds to differentiate, but I'm thinking it might be a Sharp-shinned Dave. Mainly because a Cooper's tail feathers have prominent white tips (although this coloring can be worn off) and to me, its eyes should be more forward on its head; i.e. closer to the beak, for a Cooper's.
The difficulty, for me anyhow, to ID these birds, is why I've started calling them Shooper's. :)

Great shots guys! I think you're correct Bill. I struggled with the ID and now agree that the lack of a white strip shows this guy is a Sharp-Shinned Hawk.

So Stuart and I did the Merritt Island bird trip - they were in completely different spots than ever before - lots of birds. Stuart I am sure will post a few soon as well. We watched a bunch of waders chase after a small flock of merganser ducks which where chasing minnows. I will get some of those up soon.
I was able to bucket list the Scrub Jay, not sure what hawks these are.

These should give an idea of the action that was going on. This was in the first 1/4 mile of the black water bird refuge on Merritt Island - Oh yea, we had a great time, anytime you can shoot w/ Stuart do so - a lot of fun. He went back the next morning and I saw a couple of the early morning shots and he inspired me to go early a.m. (arrgh of a drive but....) I hope he posts them soon - they looked great.

I think in the last one here there are either 6 or 7 different species.
Some wonderful images....the Florida birds are really fun....well done!!

Well i had a fantastic time with Mike and his Buddy John in Merrit island . I even got to try his badboy 600mm tamron. It is by far the best place to see multiple species in large quantities all in the same spot. you could fill a memory card pretty quick if you arent selective with your shots . If you are in the area definatly look up Mike and see if he can spend a few hours with you shooting , he's a really cool guy even if he does drive a dodge ha ha ha :D. Thank you very much Mike for taking me out for the day .

Hi guys and Happy New Year!
This thread is as amazing as ever! I just scrolled through about a hundred pages, some from way, way back and the more current ones and everyone just continues to leave me in complete awe! One beautiful photo after another ...still the best on the internet and going strong!
Denise
Wow....thanks Denise!!
Nice to hear from you....hope you are back for a while....you've been missed for sure.
Happy New Year!!
Thanks, Joel! I haven't been really shooting much in quite awhile but I just picked up the 7d II and Sigma 150-600mm/c. So, once I figure out the new gear, maybe I will have a decent shot or two to post. Looking at all of these though, I am feeling a bit intimidated ...okay, maybe more than a bit! You guys are the best! Maybe I will start a newbie thread!

You will enjoy the 7DII....I have been using it a lot. The increased pixel density and 1.6 crop factor allow you to retain more detail when cropping. The only thing I have found is that it does not do as well with underexposure and really low light compared to the full frame sensors. In good light it is capable of great things. You will do wonderfully I am sure. Can't wait to see some of your shots here!
