I thought I would share this one of a Cactus Wren I took last fall at Boyce Thompson Arboretum just outside Superior AZ. I was able to get a number of pics with him building his nest.

Went to see how many dippers were on my favorite spot. Counted 6 different ones =)
Here is one, the weather was not the most desirable, cloudy, -5 degrees and windy. After this photo my lenses AF pretty much froze.

I decided to bundle up and head out in the cold this morning. The temp was -14f and with the wind felt like -35f. It turns out the birds can tolerate a lot more cold than me , I only lasted 2 hours before the sting of the wind got the best of me. I did manage to get a few nice shots but I learned 1 very important thing today,
I really really really miss Florida lol.

Stuart - I see you got the shutter speed up to 1/1000 and 1/1600 seconds. That worked out great... the eyes are killer.

Thanks Pat but the credit goes to you guys for telling me how to get it done. All i did was follow instructions (and freeze me toes).
I had to over expose 1 stop then pull the exposure back in lightroom. Then I applied a radial filter to bring the eye back to its original exposure. Not sure if thats the way to do it , but it looks like it worked lol.
Agree they are just brilliant.

Wonderful shots, Stuart! That Cardinal is thinking that if you are willing to stand out in that kind of weather for a shot of him, he is more than willing to pose just for you ...or he's thinkin', "that dude is absolutely crazy!"
Beautiful Cardinal Stuart...well done!

I cant wait for warmer weather when other species start migrating north. For now i will stick to the few species that stick around all winter .

OK so I know the focus is off, but the peak-a-boo element this was just too cool. I need to figure out how to lead the focus w/ the tamzooka, there are several others today that the lens couldn't keep up and oof they would have been so cool....

Not a great shot, but a great bird. I slowly catch on to some things in Photoshop Elements, so that I am reworking some shots from a Grand Canyon vacation.

I cannot believe I finally have something to add to this thread!
First day out with the 7d II and the 150-600mm lens. I still have a great deal to learn about each one and the combo!! Maybe not my best bird shots but they are my only ones in a long, long time!

would love to know the birds in Denise's photo.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe it is a sharp-shinned hawk and a northern flicker.
I was going to post yesterday that I was amazed how close you were able to approach a Sharp Shinned and how I was sorry for the Flicker too ..... I believe you are correct.
Here is another from my first day out to the park ...

My first wild ABE .... went on a 3 day fishing trip to Kentucky Lake and, of course, the camera bag had to be part of the plan:D
This was taken Thursday, it was a rainy gloomy day which I think is why this bird was so approachable, I was happy to get the chance.

My two favourites of this year (until now)
To support Brian's praise of the 55-250STM, here's a shot I grabbed of a pelican zooming along the surface of the water alongside the cruise ship we were recently on. This is a serious crop and one frame of many sharp frames taken with the 55-250STM on an SL1 and shooting AI Servo. That combo actually makes a decent, lightweight birding rig.
