Re: Post your best bird shots!
Denise,
That is strange....just about all the varieties of birds here in central Kentucky will go to the suet at times.
I wonder if you break a little up and put it with your seed it might introduce them to it?
Or, maybe let the seeds run out for a day to see if they will then go for some suet?
Joel
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
Hey Denise....to pile on w/what Joel said; no matter the time a year here in MA, the suet is very popular. Especially now w/the adults bringingtheir kids. In fact as I look outmy window, there is a flock waiting for me to refill the suet feeders.
Sorry I can't help you w/some suggestions other than try a different brand/flavor and leave it out for them.
Gotta go, they're becoming quite vocal for the suet. [:D]
Regards
Bill

Re: Post your best bird shots!
I find it interesting that suet can be effective at this time of year in some places and not effective in others. Up here in northern NH it is not really a good idea to put out food of any kind to attract birds. If you do very often a bear will show up to claim his portion. Except of course they all consider the entire amount theirs and act accordingly. Yes they do show up in the daytime and yes when people are about and yes they do in down Town Bethlehem. Such is life in the north country.
Hope you find that tidbit interesting.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Wayne....bears !! That's wild. I have had possums, deer and racoons but no bears in central Kentucky. I think there are black bears in the mountains of eastern Kentucky.
Here's a shot of one of my seed theives.......

Thanks again for sharing,

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Nice pix of the RTHBs Joel....I'm having the same increase in visits to my feeder(s). The Orange Jewelweed, that's normally in full bloom right now, isn't very prolific due to the heat and lack of rain (assumption).
Even the flowers I've planted specifically for HBs and butterflies aren't great this year....so I've put out a 2nd and 3rd HB feeder and keep the fountain water fresh for them.Thefeeders and water supplydoes make it simpler to photograph them though.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Nice capture Joel:
Boy are you guys lucky being able to put out HBFs. We can't get away with that at all. Yup you guessed it, bears think we put them out for them and treat them as their personal property. Yesterday when I was out shooting water falls I saw a female at some fire weed. However same old story, wrong lens to try and capture her. Gone before I could get my 100-400 out of my pack. Keep up the great work.
Adrian
That Turn (?) in front of the cow back drop is really neat. You actually shot it that way? Good for you.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Another Hummer.....Using two 430 EXII flashes and camera mounted 530 EXII set to 1/16 output and triggered with pocket wizard TT5's.....this was taken with 1D MKIII and 300 mm2.8L
Camera is in manual mode, 1/160 sec+ iso 160+ f/10 : this allowed some ambient light so that the wings are blurred a little and the trees in the backgroundare seen.
I've noticed that by varying the iso and/or f stop you can control how much wing blur will be seen in the image. (themore ambient light you allow the more the wings will blur) Altering the shutter speed has much less effect.

I know that you don't like very saturated colors, but I think that even in real life they are a bit more vivid.I would bumbup the saturaton anoch.Other than that it's a great photo.
BTW how do you like your 1D III over your 40D?
John.
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
John,
I did de-sat the reds a little in this shot becuase the bird's gorget was too hot, perhaps I went a bit far but on my monitor it looks good.
The MKIII (I purchased used from Adorama) just a few months ago .... it's taking some time to adjust to .... I had used the 40D exclusively for 2-3 years
The 1.3 crop factor is a big difference to me, I have to try to get a little closer for birds but for landscapes, portraits, sports or family snapshots it seems easier to frame a shot and include more in the image.
The improved weather sealing I wanted because I intend to attend some wrokshops in locations where the weather can be a big factor.
The MKIII shoots faster than the 40D in terms of frame rate and the shutter lag is less. The camera has good feel and handles well. Some of the features like extended ISO settings and more AF points are helpful. The menus and programming are significantly deeper and I have just scratched the surface.
When you get a well exposed sharp image I think MKIII pictures have a sort of depth to them that the 40D doesn't .....that's probably subjective.... overall it's a better camera.
Joel

So I'm not crazy for thinking that full-frame and 1.3 had a "Look" to them that was differant to 1.6. Actually I dubed it the full-frame look.[:)]
John.
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
John,
No your probably not crazy....maybe it has to do with pixel size and processing...as the MKIII has bigger pixels than the 40D....this makes each pixel gather more photons. (the trade offis thatyou have less pixels actually on the subject so maybe a little less resolution and less ability to make big crops)
I believe that (all else being equal) the 1D series bodies willoutperform and produce better images than thexxD series....but then they should considering the price difference. (a used 1D III in excellent conditioncosts more than a new 7D)

<div style="CLEAR: both"]</div>
I shoot mostly portraits. No matter what sensor I am using I am going to fill the frame with my subject. The larger the sensor, the closer I will be to my subject assuming I am using the same lense. With my FF since I am closer to my subject the perspective is different and the depth of field is less. This is what I miss about my medium format film camera. I do not think I'll ever ba able to afford a medium format digital.

you guys are having a lot of fun taking hummingbird picture and it seems like there are multi flash involved, I 'm kind of hesitate to get into this because i have no idea with the flash photography.anyway, this is a really nice capture and I like the black background very much!

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Thanks for the kudos Joel....the 3 H's finally broke here last week....it was getting pretty old. LOL
Due to all the heat and lack of rain, my HB garden is pretty anemic. I was surprised to see this HB at the Coleus. Fortunately I was (relatively)prepared for the shot.
JJ...you're welcome, yours isa nice BIF capture.
Also JJ, unlike Joel, all my HBs are shot w/natural light....I only have one flash (580 EX) and when I use it, I blow their eyes out.
Glad you guyz liked the shot

Bill, Just like you, I only have one off camera flash and no light stand. But I think I have a short term solution. I am planning to shoot some humingbirds this evening and wanted to get the flash off camera, but my feeder is about 7 feet high, so I started looking around my garage and this what I came up with:
1. Borrow the Cristmas tree stand
2. Grab a piece of PVC pipe and cut to length
3. Insert PVC in stand and drop a brrom stick down the middle for added rigidity
4. Get a small piece of wood or stiff plastic about 1/4 thick and 3"x3"square
5. Attach a PVC plug to the wood with a small nut and bolt for a light platform
6. Sit the plug (and wood) over the top of PVC pipe---it should be pretty snug, but not glued.
7. Put the feet on your flash and attach to wood with tie wraps or bull clamps--
Now I have my flash off camera, at the proper h<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: black; font-size: 9pt;"]eight and I can easily point the head at the bird and the body at my camera so the IR works.---
<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: black; font-size: 9pt;"]I figure I have about $1.85invested and as long as I can confidently attach my flash--it should work ok.
<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: black; font-size: 9pt;"]See what happens when your stuck in the house but stll looking to shoot something [8-)]

Beautiful photo, guys!
Bill you take the best hummingbird photos! I have yet to see one in my yard but my daughter saw one for the first time last week. I don't even shoot bird photos too often anymore because I got bored with the same old 3 or 4 types I always see.
I think I need to go where the eagles fly ...Yoni, your photos are awesome! Also, Markbarton - I love your last B&W shot!

Re: Post your best bird shots!

nice eagle shots from a kayak! fearless! - wouldnt take my gear out on one of those lol
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
Denise...thanks for the "over the top" compliment, but don't forget Joel Eade's HBs....he has some prettyastonishing captures also.
As far as attracting them....I found the number of visits grew per hour when I finally put in a small water fountain that makes noise....they love fountains, misters, dripping water, etc. You can make them as simple or elaborate and as inexpensive or expensive as you would like, just make sure there is a protection zone for them close by.
Also, make sureyou change the sweet water (1/4 Csugar to 1 C water, food coloring isn't necessary nor recommended)and clean the feeders every few days....the sweet water will ferment and if left too long will develop mold. Oh yeah, watch for drowning ants.
Don't give up, they're pure entertainment and great photo subjects.
Bob Williams....thanks for your DIY flash stand idea. I'm heading your way in a couple of weeks, put in order for dry weather. [:D]
Thanks
