Great eye contact Erno, he must be one of your best mates.
Or did you just spill beer on his girlfriend?

I thought the background setting was really worth accentuating (the colors in the wallpaper, couch, pillows, and sky visible through the window).I tried tohighlight the background asmuch as the subject; many times, my shots focus so much on the subject that the background becomes an irrelevant part of the image. It's a possibility that I could have lit the subject more dramatically, but honestly, I would have had a very difficult time keeping the reflection of the lights out of the glass behind him (it was difficult enough as shot).
If I had it to do over again, I'd pull the lamp on the left in a little toward the subject to allow for more optimal framing. I'd also try a few shots with a larger mainlight coming from the side instead of straight on, and possibly increase the rimlight on the right side.

How the bottom part of the image is lost in darkness might be adding to the "dullness" you're sensing?
Maybe another speedlight on the ground to spill even light on the ground and the bottom of the couch will "lift" the image a bit?
Just my 2c [:)]

I thought the first was really good, it had me wondering if you controled your light that well or if you photoshoped out any glare, stray light.
Only comment I had, everything is red, red background, red couch with a red headed guy with a red tie. It makes the picture hot and his skin tones red as well, I was just thinking if his skin tones were taken down a degree or two it would make him stand out in the picture. But then again maybe you were going for the red look and if thats the case you deffinelty got that.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
This young lady wants a full set of senior portraits done--casual, cap & gown, shots with her '67 Camaro, and lacrosse-themed portraits. Unfortunately, it was simply too windy today to try the first three shots she wanted as I would typically use large modifiers. Fortunately, however, the brooding and cloudy weather was perfect for the attempting the lacrosse shots. Setup info and one more select image posted to my flickr photostream.

Holy cr*p, that first one is excellent Sean. You could sell insurance, security or anything with that shot.
If I got first pick, I think I would want her on my side.
Great job.

She ran and slid head first into a large standing water spot on the field (it had been raining most of the day). However, when she stood up after the slide, she was mostly just wet. That's when I ran over to a mud puddle, scooped up some mud, and slapped it on her arms, legs, and face. Once she got a better idea of what we were going for, she proceeded to pick up some more mud and wipe it on her jersey too.

Without a doubt. It was probably the most fun I've ever had on a senior portrait session.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
My wife cooperating with my desire to do natural light shots with my still relatively new 50mm.
5DII + 50mm f/1.2: 1/250 @ f/1.2 ISO 100

My nephew, who was very interested in this big white thing pointed at him all the time. Made it easy to get pictures of those big blue eyes.
5DII + 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II: 1/100 @ f/2.8 ISO 320

My new niece with her Grandma. I darkened the background in an attempt to make it less distracting, what do you think?

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Hi Brian
Love your pictures.[:D] I perhaps (and I'm no expert in portraits) would have set the 50mm up to around f4.5 shutter around 250, realizing that the ISO will go up. ISO 800 is still a reasonable bet with the 5DMKII. Niece & Grandma same thing. F6.3, shutter 250, ISO as high as 800. [:^)]
I love the last the cup cake wrestle. Very nice. [Y]

I'm no expert in portraits either, but I'm not sure if stopping down would really give me the effect desired in most portraits I see. Usually I try and minimize DoF. However f/1.2 may give a DoF too narrow, since her right eye is OOF, which some may not like that appearance. I'm still in the learning stage with the 50mm f/1.2, but I like most of the results I've gotten with it - seems to be the master of creamy bokeh.

Tkerr, Great shots of your little one----these are definately wall worthy, but........I can't help but think this boy is going to be a master manipulator with nothing but a smile[;)]. Keep your wallet close and the neighborhood girls as far away as possible. Again, great shots
Thanks for sharing,

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I finally got around to posting the cap & gown and casual favorites from Katherine's session...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2707/...9aa11655_z.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2758/...6b435aa3_z.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2722/...48da1ae3_z.jpg
I had several favorites from this session, but chose these three because they represented a good, diverse cross-section of the shoot as a whole (sitting, standing, closeup--as well as three different wardrobes).

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Top work again Sean, I like the light on the second image the best, it is very even and very natural.
You must need a whole car full of gear to get so much consistent natural light.

Right now I'm at the point where my Mustang GT (with two 10in subs in the trunk) can't fit it all. I had a photography assistant actually bring some additional gear for this shoot that I couldn't fit in my car (the gear was a Paul C. Buff 22" HOBD and an umbrella, and we used neither during the shoot).

Wow! I didn't even realize at first that that was the same girl!! Beautiful shots, Sean!
I had a guy again ask me if I would take grad photos of his daughter even though I told him the other day that I wasn't skilled enough or equipped for something like that. I feel so bad turning him down! I think I'm going to drag my daughter into the backyard this weekend to see what I can pulloff with just two little speedlights and a softbox and umbrella! At least the umbrella will come in handy if it's raining! [st] [um]

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
You can do quite a bit with two speedlights. I did an entire shoot this on Saturday with just two speedlights, a couple of umbrellas, and a reflector. I haven't published the photos from this particular session yet, but here's an example (the link will eventually be broken when the temporary google photo gallery is taken down).

Just do the shoot for cost. Good practice for you and almost free for him. Can't loose. This is how I got started and when I was confident I could give pretty consistent results I started my part time business. Now it helps feed my habit for more equipment.

Thanks! I will use that similar set-up except I only have one umbrella so I will have to make it work with that and a softbox.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Sean, those shots from the senior shoot look terrific. I had been waiting to see the rest of the shoot since the casuals got rained out last time. I am sure she is one happy camper with those shots. Very well done, sir.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I had thought about posting this in the "current shots" thread, but it isa portrait.
I just got finished with phase one of making a DIY beauty dish. This is a first for me to be making that big of a DIY modifier. So far I think it has turned out pretty great. It is sturdy, but still relatively light. I will post some pictures of the dish itself sometime this week when I get done with it. Between Sean and the Strobist... I just want to keep doing new stuff.
Here is a shot from the almost complete dish.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3659/...434fdeae_b.jpg
Canon 50d + Tamron 28-75 2.8 @ f8 1/200 ISO-100 75mm
The dish was above and slightly forward and left of the subject. It was shot with a 580exII at 1/8 power. There is also a vivitar 285hv at 1/6 power shot through 32 white umbrella, behind camera, subject left for quasi on axis fill. If i were doing more than just testing this dish out quickly I would have put another speedlight in the rear to rim light or give some separation. I also might have gelled the beauty dish a bit for warmth, but as I mentioned this is just a test.
Here is a 100% crop of the eye to show spatial relation of the light units.

Let me know what you all think.
Dave.
