Also, for color images, you can do amazing things with little ones (or big folks) skin tones by copy the layer and converting to B&W using a red filter or an enhanced green one then set the layer blending to soft light and adjusting the layers opacity. Sometimes hard light can be good too just experiment. This can also be a good way of doing a less random high pass filter effect.
Once you have the blending set don't be afraid to go into curves and play with the midtones.
