Had to poke around a little to find one I didn't shoot with my macro lens. But here is an example where I think a shot works without "rule of thirds" application. Though the focal point is still not dead center. What I like about this Dahlia is the angle of the bloom and I think the lines of the petals do a nice job of leading you into the focal point.

I find the best way to learn is to study other photographers examples and love these forums because they are so rich in content for that purpose.
