The greens on the rocks give a great 3D spatial feel to this image, lovely exposure. Was it getting dark, or very shaded?

Thank you. It was shaded. There were a lot of these creeks running down the hills in the Smoky's, but I had to look for shaded ones. If any sun got through, it would wash out the area.
As an example, here is one where the sun poked through... not near as nice:
