Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Thanks Bob (if I may call you Bob). But the f****n clouds have come in hard and I can't see anything.....I think the sequencing is a little beyond me right now but thanks very much for the information. Although I suppose I could just do as you say and I'll have the shots to layer when I'm studied up on CS5 in the future....if it weren't for the clouds that is.
The 24-105mm is not extender-compatiple, is it?

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
50 something posts on the moon and just a few images, and they're all mediocre at best [:)][:)][:)][:D][:D][:D][:P][:P][:P]...let Nate give you some tips on how to successfully photograph the moon.[;)]
Shooting the moon is very easy...you can even shoot it handheld.
I want to tell you first that the longer the lens the better it is, because you want to fill your frame with the moon as much as you can, this way less cropping is involved, and if you want to use low ISO you need a tripod.
My setting would be Manual with aperture at f/5.6 or f/8, ISO 100, and shutter speed around 1/500 to start out with. If the moon is too dark, decrease the speed, if the moon is too bright, increase the speed.Do that until you see all the craters on the surface of the moon. That's it folks! Very simple.
We've been having record breaking rain in the past 4 days here in Southern California so I couldn't shoot the eclipse, but here are my two photographs of the moon.
Blue Moon - Canon 40D + EF 400mm f/5.6L USM - f/5.6, 1/1000, ISO 400, Manual Exposure, Handheld
I shot this handheld so I need the shutterspeed hence ISO 400, I used tungsten white balance to make the moon blue [:D]

Canon 7D + EF 500mm f/4L IS USM, f/5.6, 1/125, ISO 100, Manual Exposure, Tripod
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_uxe7FqpWNN4/TR.../IMG_7340b.jpg
I find that shooting the moon when it's full is boring, these are about 50% crop

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Nate
Niether were last night?
I found it hard to get the contrast last night.
Just like a nomral full moon the shadows were washed out so you couldn't get the detail out like you could in the last 1/4 or first 1/4, similar to your second pic.
I was hoping that the eclipse shadow would possibly give the same effect as first or last 1/4 but it actualy didn't.
If your going to show us how to do it. lets see some full moon shots with some detail [:P]

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
I thought I'd be under a blanket of fog here (Aberdeen, Scotland) but the sky was actually quite clear at the time. Trouble is, the eclipse was about an hour before sunrise, so the pre-dawn light took away some of the magic and there was too much urban light pollution and many buildings in the way, plus I was at work. I did see it from the office, but couldn't open the windows to get a clear shot so I didn't capture anything except in my memory.
Thanks to all here for helping each other out and sharing what you caught.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Neither were from last night, we've been having record-breaking rain the past 4 days, and the rain hasn't stopped since 10am Monday morning. Here's the fullmoon shot, like I mentioned earlier, I find the fullmoon boring. This shot is handheld, I believe I used ISO 800 andcropped 50% hence the background noise. Taken with 40D and 400 f/5.6L. Shooting with the 7D is even better because with 18 megapixels you can cropvery tight and still retain a lot of details. I find composing and cropping an image of the moon are the hardest parts, I'm still undecided between cropping very tight or leaving a lot of space to showthe vastness of space and sky.

Nice full moon Nate.
First thing I found when I got the 500mm was that the full moon is boring just like you said. It is alot harder to pull detail out because there are not as many shadows. Cresents you can get more detail out of the sides.
Last night what I found was that as the moon went in to eclipse is that it was so dark, I had to shoot full open at F5.6 the exposurewas between .5 and 1 second shutter speed. I had to raise the ISO to 800 just so I could stay below 1 second. A little over a second shutter speed and the moon itself actualy started bluring the shot from its movement during the shot. I think I probably have better shots in the batch, last night it was so lateI picked a few that looked decent and posted them. Tonight I am going back through and process them.
Thanks for sharing

Hey Hawk,
I love your Lunar Shots, you really nailed it. When it got dark, I didn't raise my ISO until it was too late. I didn't realize the shots were blurry on the tiny LCD, as the moon was dragging in the photo. It seems that over 1 sec. you could really see some blur. I have a lot more shots to go through, however I'm out of hard drive space so I have to move a few things around first. I think I will have some better shots leading up to the eclipse.
I don't now about you, but I'm friggin exhausted. It was about 5:30 before I finally fell sleep.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Rick those shots are fantastic mate. Really nice. I guess it helps having the 500mm to play with.
-
Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
This is one in full eclipse at 2:36 am it was F5.6, shutter 0.5, ISO 800
I had some time to go through and do some sorting now. This one is one of the best. I added contrast and sharpness. Messed with the white balance, but who knows if this is right I am just making a guess that it is correct.

Its overexposed....just a really bright dot.
But you're basically handcuffed using a 35mm for such distant (small) object...not sure how anyone could compete with HD and Nate and Richard (with their considerable reach) with a 35mm lens.
But good on you for giving it a go!

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Really great captures, gents!
Also, Nate, thanks for the moon tips. I tried it last night and was really pleased with the results.
-
Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Ok, Here is what I captured. These were taken with a 7D, I believe the colorful ones were taken with the 70-200 f/4 L IS and 1 Kenko 1.4xTC and the first one was with two Kenko 1.4xTC stacked. I didn't take into account that the moon would move as much as it did during a 5 second exposure so none of my closeups during the total eclipse were crisp. Total dumb@#$ move.[:@]Of course at 18 degrees, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the camera outside. Anyway, here were some of mine...

Great captures everyone. I don't know about everyone else, but 3 a.m. waiting for this thing to happen was a little too late. Maybe the next time it will be earlier and my grandkids can take some notes.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Jason the shots you took look pretty good to me. I did the same thing as you which is using shuttterspeeds over 1 sec when it got dark, I didn't realize that the moon had motion blur over 1 sec. We should have done what Hawk did which was to raise the ISO and shorten the shutter speed (faster) so that the images would be sharper. Don't let the shutter-speed fall below 1/2 sec due to motion blur of the Moon.
Here's my set!
7D: 300mm f/2.8L IS 2X extender @600mm, tripod, cable release, un-cropped (except the first one)
EXIF data ranges from f/6.3 @ 1/500sec to f/5.6 @ 2 sec. at ISO 100

Thats all Folks!
Well, I have learned a few things for next time out. First, is that a longer lens would be better as opposed to the 2X extender, but more importantly is to raise the ISO as the eclipse is happening, since it gets darker. I was increasing the shutter speed duration because I figured I had a good tripod, but it seems that anything over approx. 0.5 seconds seems to cause motion blur just from the Moon moving. The shots looked good on the 3 inch LCD. I started to notice they where getting blurry but by then it was pretty much over.
I'm aware that some of the shots are soft and I hope to do better next time!
C&C and discussion are Welcome!
Thanks for viewing,

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Nicely done Rich
The shots that were taken when the moon was getting to be a smaller crescent looking through the camera without live view, you could see the white bright part of the moon and the full orange shaded area behind it.
I tried to capture similar to what you have in your #12 picture. Only more so trying to get the whole orange area. Maybe in photo shop a person could tone down the bright crescent and brighten up the orange part in the shadows. For a few frames I had a CP filter on trying to see if I could kill the moonlight. It just turned it blue. I might try it in photoshop when I get time.
I think you would have been fine with the 1.4x instead. I have a 2x but have never been happy with the results on either my 300mm F2.8L or the 500mm F4L.
I think its a good lesson though, if for some reason you ever want to have a crescent or full moon in one of your pictures a person would know over a second and half it will blur.
It was fun

Re: Lunar Eclipse Tonight
Thanks Hawk!
It definitely was very cool. I could try and adjust the settings a little bit too, like toning down the reflections and bring out the orange like you had suggested.
As I'm looking through the EXIF data, it seems that there is some motion blur even at 0.6 sec. so the best advice I can give someone would be to try and keep the shutter speed faster than a 1/2 sec. by raising the ISO.
Ok.. are you ready for the next one!
Here's the schedule: June 15th 2011 and Dec. 10th, 2011
I didn't realize that these occur approx. every 6 months.

Have a good night... I'm still trying to catch up on my sleep.
