You're right, this is a tough assignment, but a good one.
This image taught me the virtues of using raw file format. It was almost completely blown out. What was once an unrecognizable image is now, well, let just say an interesting effect.

This is a chair (chairs are my corks):

I think this was my first HDR, and this last one will be my submission:

Some great contributions this time.
I thought if it is about light, then I should probably try and see the light, so I went to St John's Cathedral. Construction started back in 1906 and has been ongoing to this day. There is a lot of stained glass, dark corners and golden light to explore. Here is a shot from the inside, showing me the way out.

Shot with a Zeiss 21mm.
Cheers,
Steve
@ Steve - spectacular shot!
@Lars - Beautiful HDR, the tress on the left really stand out in the haze of light.

I like it. Light is perfect for this shot at near, mid and far. Well done.
On my ship-based tour of the Scottish Hebrides this past spring, we cruised around the remote island of St. Kilda by zodiac. We came across this cave, and were astonished at the amazing light coming in from all angles. I used a Canon 5D2, with 24-70 f/2.8 lens, 1/80 sec @ f/4, ISO 3200. No artificial light was used in the shot.

"Surfer Silhouette" This is my submission. 7D: 300mm f/2.8L IS @ f/2.8 1/5000sec. ISO 100
I choose this one because I felt that the lighting was more of the main subject.

No cutoff date on this one eh? :D
Cool shots Rich. I like that last one. The way it blew out the sun.. made it look HUGE. Very nice.
Great photos everyone! [Y]
This is the last weekend to submit your photos, so if you haven't joined yet, please do so [:D]

The larger than normal size of the Sun and Moon shot at the horizon is considered an optical illusion. The reason for this illusion is till debated as you can read about it in the link.

If anyone takes a shot like this with a "Super-telephoto" lens, then please be very careful not to point the lens in the direction of the Sun for more than a second or two as you can risk damaging your camera sensor.
Rich
Probably taking the assignment a little to literally. So here is a light.
On the more subtle side this was a long exposure (25 seconds) after the sun set which makes the Lake Michigan waves look foggy, and then after everyone went home, the person that closes the park showed up and went inside. He turned the lights on and left the door open... which just adds a little to the lighthouse.

Is it time to vote yet?
Wow, so many good ones here, personally love the cave at the top of the page, i've seen caves that good (in the Czech) but never with a camera unfortunately. No way i'll get anywhere near them so may as well put in another one just for the show of it.

The finalists will be selected as soon as possible and hopefully we'll get to vote soon!
Good luck everybody!

No, I didn't use any filters on the 300mm lens which only takes the Canon neutral Drop-in or CPL and I wasn't using the CPL because it was getting late in the day. I didn't use any special photoshop tricks either, because I don't know any.
All I did was a couple of slider adjustments for post-processing in Apple Aperture. I lowered the exposure by 1 stop (because I was actually shooting surfers to my left away from the Sun and then I saw some big surf breaking to my right over on the next beach, and as I turned to my right I got lucky just as this Surfer was getting some air, so I took the shot but it was overexposed). I also raised the contrast from 0 to 0.5, the black point from 3 to 5.5, defintion from 0 to 0.55, and the biggest adjustment was the highlights from 0 to 60 and that was about it. It's also cropped a bit.
Rich

Adrian, I have send you a message concerning a new assignment yesterday. If you haven't seen it or it didn't show up, please contact me. Either by e-mail(in my profile) or by adding me as a friend.

Rad. :) If that is the theme you're going to go with, I'm excited. Good topic when fall colors are coming in. Congrats again.
With the way you spelled "colours" I'm guessing you're on the other side of the lake? Europe?
Edit: just saw you posted well wishes from Abu Dhabi. Welcome, you'll like it here. :)

I have read your message Jan,thank you for taking the time to write me,I think what I would like to see is images where the colour can be a subject by itself, something dramatic and powerfull.what do you think? If is ok with you and you have the time please set it up and lets compete one more time.
Thank you very much and I hope to see you all posting some amazing shots like usual.
We can work with that Adrian :)
I'll make it right now!
