Great elk shot.
I just took a few of those over the weekend as well.

I like this shot but I dont feel it does this waterfall justice. This is only the bottom third.
A lot of great elk on this page, but you gotta love the one with the felt hanging all over the antlers. To bad he got all dressed up with ear rings and necklace for the shoot.
I'm sure it'll just be to keep an eye on population numbers.
Need to be legible from a distance so they don't have to catch them once tagged.
Pure speculation of course :D
From a technical standpoint, there's nothing special about this image. But it's not about the form - it's about the content. And the contents of this location are truly amazing...

I flew down this early morning from Boston for a work meeting in New Jersey, and took a short detour up to Penn Station in Manhattan, then a short walk to Wonderland. :D
This elk is part of the reintroduced population in Smoky mountains national park. Its a small herd they introduced and they have a few biologists that are pretty much constantly monitoring the elks activities. 90% of the elk here are tagged like that. Its great for study purposes but not so great for photography.
and yeah, 100-400 on a 50d.
