Re: Post your best bird shots!
Hi Adrian,
There may be other ways, but to start a new post, click on one of the topics at the top (Image Presentation, Photography Tips & Techniques, etc). Then, look in the top right hand corner, not at the very top, but a few inches down. There should be a blue button that says "New Post." So, all new posts have to be within one of the discussion categories. At least, that is how I understand it.
To reply to a current post, yep, the reply button. Also, to edit posts use the small pencil icon in the bottom left corner of your post.
I hope that helps,
Brant

Re: Post your best bird shots!
OK, I don't normally shoot birds, but this one was sitting in my backyard (which is on the 8th green of a golf course). He just perched himself on the 9th tee marker and dared me to shoot him. Is this a kestrel? Canon 7D with 70-200 f/4 L at 200mm handheld, 1/3200 sec at f/4, ISO 200.

Rob, I am by no means a bird expert, But I don't think this is a kestral, at least not one that I have seen. I tried a little bird ID on whatbird.com and this guy matches a lot of features of a "Red Shouldered Hawk, but not a full grown male. Maybe a Juvi or a female. Take a look here: http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/40/overview/Red-shouldered_Hawk.aspx be sure and look at all of the photos and you'll see what I am talking about.

Rob - your hawk photo is awesome!!
JJ - Fantastic GBH photo! I wish I could have gotten this close and this great a shot with my 100-400mm when I was shooting GBH

Re: Post your best bird shots!
thanks Denise!, I did get really close this time, the click sounds of the shutter scared bird away and I couldn't get the whole bird in the frame when it took off because i was too close to the bird[:)]

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Joel, properly selected DoF and exposure, nice BIF shot again!
Rich, wow, nice nice shot!, i like the pose of the bird and blurred background! un-cropped?! you must got really close to the bird and seemed! like the bird would hit your lens in seconds!

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Thanks JJ!
I have a few other nice shots in this sequence of the bird flying right towards the camera, with the AI Servo of the 7D doing a really nice job of tracking the action head on.
Should I post a few more from this BIF sequence; wings up, wings spread, wings down?

why not Rich?!, don't worry too much about what other people is thinking, if somebody don't like it, they can just simply ignore it.
BTW, maybe I will crop the bird a little bigger so we can see the birds eyes more clear. I believe properly exposed and sharp eye(s) of bird is the spirit of bird picture.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
These shots are really fantastic! You really nailed everything on these ...background is perfect, obviously the perfect time of day for fantastic lighting, tack sharp on every shot! It is tough choosing between #2 and #4 but I think I prefer the slight angle of the head head on #2.

Theses image are still part of my first attempt from 2 weeks ago and I'm really loving that birding feeling, so if any of you wildlife specialists have any tips or pointers, I'm certainly interested in your critiques as well, good or bad.
I was thinking of doing a Canvas wrap like Denise did. I just have to figure out the size and the lab. Although, Adorama provided nice customer service, I was a little disappointed in their quality control, for letting that original canvas leave the lab like that, and then the 2nd one had to be touched up as well.
How about Mpix?
Rich
<div style="CLEAR: both"]</div>
Hi Rich -
Your photo is going to look awesome in a wrap! I have a photo myself that I am thinking about getting wrapped and I am not sure if I want to give Adorama one last chance at redeeming themselves. Althought their customer service is top notch, a quality product is what your paying for and hoping to not have to contact customer service. When I was looking before, many people recommended Mpix but there was quite a price difference, which I guess you get what you pay for.
If you do go with them, please post what you think of the final product. I'd be very interested to hear!

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Richard,
The metallic paper has a sort of sheen to it, different from glossy, and certain colors seem to really pop, especially blues, whites and silvers to my eye.
I think your pics have a "painterly effect" for a few reasons :
1. The background is pretty far back from the subject
2. The background is fairly homogeneous grass and, since it

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Richard, I had a couple more thoughts :
Can you post a screen shot of the histogram from the unprocessed image?
I am wondering if 1/1000 sec is maybe a little too slow to get great detail on BIF, you might have needed to increase the ISO a little to get more speed....usually I get better results with 1/1600 to 1/2000 or more. The addition of the 2X converter is also known to have an impact on image quality as well as AF performance. You need a lot more light with it in place to make razor sharp images usually.
