Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Really nice series rob, like the grittiness of the first and the casual feel to the last one, must have taken some setting up.
Beautiful pic Gian, has everyone got perfect skin where you are? LOL.
Very inspiring submissions on this page.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Thank you Steve. They have good skin but I have my way to clean the skin maintaining a natural touch, not too clean as with most filters.
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I like whatever process you are doing with the skin tones, very complimentary. And the lighting is pefect in these studio shots, well done.
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
My system with the skinis very simple and pretty standard, it takes less than 5 minutes. I use CS5 but can work also with CS3 and CS4
1) Remove pimple a marks with Spot Healing Brush tool
2) I duplicate the layer with the new result and I apply a surface blur quite aggressive, to eliminate any imperfection. This looks very artificial, but it is just the base for the final result.
3) Now I create a layer mask and I pass with a black brush all area that must have the maximum definition like eyes, eyebrow, lips and hair.
4) At this point I duplicate this layer with the surface blur + layer mask; I call one layer Lighten (generally the top one) and the other layer Darken
5) I change the fusion method in Lighten for the layer called lighten and Darken for the layer called darken (this is an important part as it allow to give different values of blur for dark problems and clear problems)
6) At this point I change the opacity of the "Lighten" and "Darken" layers, typically Lighten require a value between 50-65% and Darken between 40-55% (these are just indicative values but it is easy to adapt them looking at the photo)
I hope this help.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Very generous and helpful Gian, I look forward to giving this a go.
Cheers,
Steve

Thank you Gian for the description of your work flow. I just book marked this page so I can refer to it in the future.
BTW, I know the pictures with the model are amazing, but I have to say, this one of your daughter is my favorite. Simply beautiful.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Raid I can do it for another shot, I was discussing the same technique with some friends so I have some examples:
Picture 2 Photo after hard surface blur
Picture 3 Example of layer mask
Picture 4 Final Result. The final result is after duplicating the blur level+layer mask and playing with one layer in Lighten mode + opacity and the other layer in Darken mode + opacity.
I will not leave these photo for a long time. I have no secrets, but it is a respect for the model

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
<span>Rented the 24-70mm f/2.8 for the weekend with the intention of swapping it between my 50mm and 85mm. The 24-70 never left my camera! Love it! It's a little more weight than a prime but I could live with it :P

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Beautiful shot, Baker! This lens was on my short list & it looks like for very good reason!
-
Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I agree - nice shot! The 24-70 f/2.8 is the lens I use more than any other, and it is very suitable for the 5D2 full frame sensor.

Took a few shots of Noelle this weekend.
1 White Lightning X2400, high camera left, diffused by a 60" Photek Softlighter II. Strobe triggered via Cybersyncs; powered via Innovatronix Explorer XT. On the lens I used a 2 stop B&W ND filter stacked with a B&W CPL.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Wow. Good job eliminating glare on the glasses. I struggle with that.

The 60" umbrella was placed high enough that it blocked out the sun that she was facing (putting her in complete shadow, allowing me more control over the light). Another advantage of placing the modifier that high up was that it didn't show up in the glasses when she faced forward. If she were looking up at the umbrella, it would have been a different story.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Mark - This shot is wonderful! I am very impressed that it was taken with a 5d! I was at one point considering this camera since a 5d II was never in my price range. What lens did you use?

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
I don't do many weddings so this is rare for me. My strobe light fell over before this shot and bent up my 60 inch umbrella and my spill kill reflector. The umbrella kept my strobe from hitting hard which was good. My sand bag was not sitting on the stand very well where my little gremlin that follows me around did his thing. 5DII, 16-35II, ISO 100, AV 3.2, TV 1/100

Thanks Denise. I used my EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM @ 105
I love my 5D. I am more interested in glass than a camera upgrade for a while.

Re: Post Your Best Portrait Shots!
Mark,
I felt your image would benefit from some warmth being added but otherwise a great capture. Most of the women around me hate having their picture taken. If I do get the opportunity I usually get that semi-evil look on their face. Hope you don't mind as I did the little tweak to see how it looked.

Mark E.,
That is a really impressive photo. One of the better new born photos I've seen.

I don't mind. I am not that good at noticing when I need to make a simple adjustment like this. My wife thought it was a little too yellow. I made the same adjustment but maybe half as much. She said that was ok. BTW, she is pretty white skinned.
