Thanks Steve,

JJphoto, I did a little quick pp work on your image ... the cloning is crude but the background cleaned up with noise reduction makes it pop nicely.

I am new to this... so I hope this works. I have really been enjoying all the great shots.
I just connected the lens to my tripod when this eagle flew up. My daughter started loudly telling me there was an eagle coming. Since the camera was conected to the tripod but it was not set up yet, I picked up the camera with the tripod hanging from it and started shooting as the eagle was landing. So I guess you could consider this hand held [;)]... but it turned out better than I thought it would.

Conropl, welcome here!
I agree with you, it was a hand holding and I think it's harder than regular hand holding!
it's a nice capture of eagle!
PS. this is a beautiful snow owl!, I 'v been hoping that I can see them some day!
Hey Joel,
I know you don't care for a very saturated image but I thought this one needed some more punch.

Thats the original.

And this is the edited version, I tried to keep a light hand on the saturation. But you know me![:)]
I used DXO and applied levels, tone curve, saturation andused HLS to selectively applysaturation to certain colors. The red border was applied when I used screan snipping tool to make a screen capture because my paid version of DXO is still in the mail and I'm to lazy to re-download and instal DXO.[:P]
What do you think?
John.
John,
You certainly made it pretty !! Nothing wrong with what you did, I like the colorful look but it is no where close to what it looks like to my eyes in real life.
I would like to try DXO sometime, I have heard some good things about it.
Joel
Here is another recent image from the yard ..... a little more saturated !! I was lucky to get a sharp image at 1/250.

I saw those two pic's and noticed you used the 1.4x. It made me remember last year when I bought mine, after about a week I decided it was time to try the 1.4TC and I was pleasantly surprised. I saw the two pics and I thought he is just finding this out to. To me I do not see hardly any degradation, at least not enough to matter on the big prints I like to do.
I see you are using the 7D. After some discussion in the forum, I bought a 7D to use with the 500mm, rather than the 5D MarkII. I am still not sure it is the right choice. The pics out of the 7D have to be worked in Post Process more to make them equal to the croped version out of 5D. Once worked they can be as good and even slightly superior. The AF of the 7D is not as great as of an improvement as one might expect from all the hype, for stationary pics I find the 5D to maybe even be slightly better. But the real negative I found with the 7D is the loss of DOF and I didn't expect this one. To capture a small bird close up you have to narrower aperture to have the same DOF as a 5D Mark II, which means you loose a stop of light, and this often ends up having to use faster shutter speeds. With the 500mm if you think about anything hand held it is all about shutter speed. The shutter rate and the crop factor are positives though for the 7D. So I am still debating about the 7D and 500mm F4L combination is the best way to go.

I had the 500mm F4L when I bought my 300mm F2.8, I really didn't think I would need the 300mm that much but I B&H listed it for $3700 used and it was a +10 so I thought I would take a chance. I take it out sometimes because it is a lot more compact than the 500mm. I have decided not to use the 7D on the 300mm, to just keep the 300mm for the 5D Mark II. I can put the 300mm in one of those sling packs I have, not a full blow back pack like the 500mm, so its more compact. Plus not much degradation at all with the 1.4, so if you go to the local park where all the birds come up to you its somewhat handy.
If you think about it though, with the 300mm and the 500mm you have 420mm and 700mm covered with some really nice IQ as well. So we can skip buying the 400mm and 600mm lenses, all we need is the 800mm F5.6L Is and we would have all the ranges covered. The new II series tele's prices are putting a cramp in this plan though.

Conropl, those are two fantastic shots to start with. Welcom to the forum and thanks for sharing them with us. You did a good job on the exposure for the eagle - it can be hard to retain the detail in both the white and dark feathers. The owl is beautiful.
JJ, every time I look at your latest pictures I have to go and check the current deals on the 500mm lens. Sadly, the price here has just gone up £100 due to a tax rise. Until I get one, I have to remind myself what's possible with a kit lens and larger subjects, in this case kittiwakes shot handheld from an inflatable boat in Hornsund, Spitsbergen.

Andy, those shots are FANTASTIC. If you you got your hands a 500 or 600 you would give Nate a run for his money!

Despite the 22 degree weather I went out to the lake about 10 miles from home to try some flight shots on gulls ... it was overcast gray skies so the background is boring but I got some nice images.

I set my camera up on a remote timer to get a few shots of the mockingbird in my backyard. The sun was going down and I had to push the exposure about 1.5 stops in post, which explains the extra grain.

thanks Joel for the camera information. it's a good price, but still $2000 is a lot of money, I'm getting very good result from 7D now, so I'd like to stick with it now, if I got a 1D body, can I resist a version II lens? hm.... dangerous!

nice GBH shot , I love the background, if had moved slightly yo your left or maybe made a slight sound to get him looking at you it would have been killer. ALso some NR on the background will make it better..... that 500mm lens has turned you on brother!!!

Jayson, nice shot! like the exposure and sharpness, background looks very dreamy! your kenko TC always gives me surprise! I was wondering if you can cropped a little tighter to get rid of those small branches and still have a enough details on the subject?
Joel, thanks s lot for the comments. would you explain how will a NR filter work in this situation?
and this is the picture I took today in La Jolla, not a very good day, lighting is not very good, only have few keepers and this is one of them

Dan & JJ - Your GBH shots are awesome!!! Sure make the ones I captured past summer look like they were dying from starvation!
Denise
JJphoto,
In your GBH shot the background looked a little noisy or grainy to me. You could smooth that out with the noise reduction filter and your subject will look better because of it. Here is how I perform that function after all final editing and sharpening :
1. Layer ---- Duplicate Layer ---- opens a window to duplicate the current layer, hit OK
2. The duplicate layer will be visible now and should be highlighted as well over to the right side of the screen in the layers window
3. Filter ---- Noise ---- Reduce Noise ---- set strength to maximum and preserve detail, sharpening to minimum ---- OK
4. Layer ---- Create Layer Mask ---- Reveal all
5. Paint brush tool (set to 100% opacity and look at the two little squares at the bottom of the tool bar :black is on top) ---- adjust the brush size as needed with bracket keys and paint over the bird only. Be very careful on the edges not to spill pver much. This will reveal the layer underneath so only the BG will be seen to have NR.
6. Layer --- flatten image ---- voila!
Joel
Sorry ,Joel, I thought you were talking about something like ND filter[:$]
I should have done some NR but it looked ok in PS, pictures in this forum do look noisier.
JJ, Thanks for the comments. I attempted the cropping a little tighter and I think it still did a good job of maintaining some details. Don't think I could blow it up too much in a print, but here are the two pictures at 800 px. dhesling, here is the full sized picture and then re-cropped and removal of some branches.
