Bob,
another thought... I know some people that use peanuts, mealworms and various types of fruit as well. I know that BlueJays love corn and peanuts. Bluebirds and many others like mealworms and orioles as well as some woodpeckers like fruit.

Not fantastic shot, but not bad considering i borrowed a mates non canon 500mm lens and the AF didnt work, it was handheld and on a boat on a dull day - so not too bad a result really

Actually, now i post it, it looks better cropped and this size than full screen, I'll take that [:D]
Nice puffins, Ade. Reminds me of a shot of some Common Eiders flying low in similarly difficult shooting conditions. Taken in the Andoyen Islands, Svalbard, in mid summer.

Not the best exposure, but thought it was a nice pose.

This one was actually taken last year... not quite a bird yet, but soon to be a Swan.
Ade; nice puffins....I haven't had the pleasure of shooting them, but later this summer my wife and I have a trip planned to Maine and the puffin is a high priority.
Yesterday was a cold and drab day, especially standing in mud and water for a few hours watching a Great Horned owl on her nest. I was hoping her eggs would have hatched by now, but no such luck and all she did was play peek-a-boo w/me.
So no pix of her, but I did have some luck w/a pair of Pileated woodpeckers, relatively rare bird in eastern Massachusetts and a tough subject to capture cleanly.

Last one there is great, I always see birds in a different light when you freeze them like that....good luck with the puffins, they are quick and small, but usually hang around in groups, (they do around here anyway), and dont forget, their beaks are brighter in the breeding season :)
Nice pair of Pileated WP
Nice shots everybody!
I's been busy and not taking pictures for a while, this is the one took months ago.

Do you find that you use the 1.4X a lot and if you had to do it again would you opt for the 500mm or 600mm lens?
Are you using a tripod or monopod?
Is this heavily cropped?
You may want to see if you can reduce the noise in the blue sky, and perhaps get rid of those 3 vertical branches in the bottom right of the frame.

500mm version I with TCs is the "cheapest" way to go( unlike Fast Glass, I can't live without the AF and the cheaper non IS version is the alternative choice IMO) and a lot lighter than the 600mm I.

thanks Rich for your comments!
It's nothing exotic, very cropped, and probably the laziest way to get a bird shot, but this guy was so fat, when I saw him hopping around on our backyard fence, I had to try.

Joel, every time my email says "new reply from Joel Eade" I think, ooh some more great shots are gonna be there, and I have yet to be disappointed. Great work, sir. I like that little guy in the middle, tufted titmouse? Great composition, pose, lighting.
Dave.
Thanks so much Dave, I appreciate the kind words and yes, the middle one is a Tufted Titmouse.
The top one is a Male Downy Woodpecker and the bottom one is of course, an American Robin.
"Shots from the back yard", where do you live Joel, In a Zoo???
Nice pics... post a shot of your back yard, looks awesome..
Funny story about bird pictures. I posted this picture of a pelican on this thread a little while ago.

Anyway, my Father-in-law calls me today and says, guess what!? That picture of yours is gonna be on the front of the Jacksonville, NC Onlsow county phonebook! So naturally, I thought., WOW!! NICE. ... Then he said that for some reason, since he had brought the picture to the editors attention the editor put my father-in-laws name as the photographer. [:@] Doh!
Oh well, least I know it was me. [:'(]
Ade,
I live in a small town in central Kentucky....my house is on about 5 acres of land and 4 of the 5 acres is woods ... the backyard is right up against the woods and I have a few bird feeders set up to attract birds. I use various branches positioned near the feeders as perches for my photos and I use a camoflage deer hunting blind for my camera location so I can be very close to the set up perches.
I posted some images of this a long time ago and I can
Congrats Dave ... that's very cool ..[B][B][B]

Nice shots everyone.
It appears there a lot of good bird photo oppertunities for people this morning. Here are a couple of mine from this morning.

Here is another from today. There are a lot of Sand Cranes in the fields this year, but it has been difficult getting a decent shot.

Edit: Looking at this post, I did not like the bokeh with the Sand Cranes... so I spent some time in PP to clean up the background, and re-posted. I think I like this much better. I am have a lot of problems with AF and Bokeh with my 100-400L when shooting birds in corn fields. There is so much clutter in the background that it confuses the AF and the picture turns out so cluttered. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be glad to here from you.

Nice one Denise.....good Christmas card material.
He really is puffed out against the Wisconsin cold. (PS As a native Milwaukeean I was pulling for them in the NCAA tourney!)
Joel, I love the Woodpecker shot (great contrast) and Tufted Titmouse (nice capture) shots from a couple of days ago. Also, great Cardinal shot (nice detail with the water droplets on the leaves) .
Dave, Great Pelican shot. I love the composition. It

I think the background looks fine. The main critique that I would say is to try and not cut the feet off. Their head is in the Sun, and their body is in the shade, so that also makes it a difficult shot. The eyes are not that sharp, so you could try and steady your camera with a monopod, and/or use a higher shutter speed and ISO, if they are not standing still.
If you're finding it difficult to AF, you could try and lock AF with the center point (there may be different techniques available to you depending on what body you are using) on the red and white portion of their head to create an easier contrast point for the AF system, and then recompose.

Rich, thanks for the tips. Having more room in the frame would have been nice, but the barrel on the 100-400 sticks a bit so adjusting zoom while doing a handheld shot isn
I honestly think that if you held the camera horizontal instead of vertical, then you would have nailed all of the shots in camera, because the focusing and exposures look good!
What.., no Myrtle Beach Babes to practice on? [:P]

Next time, I need to get there during daylight. These were taken shortly before sunset, with the sky overcast and the light fading fast, hence the sub-optimal shutter speed and ISO. I'll be sure to go back when the chicks hatch.
Nice shots Andy, Gannets are so beautiful ..... where are these?
