Re: Post your best Macro shots
Great shot Denise. Very nicely outlined drop.
Your shots are always so colourful, your macros in particular, from looking through your flikr photos a while ago. Part would be that you do a great job of limiting to one or two bold colours. I know you shoot raw and I believe you use DPP, so I was wondering whether you set the saturation quite high or anything else in post that gives these colourful results? Or is it just well executed lighting and isolating the subject?
Paul.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
Thanks, Paul!
I try to make the colors look as close to what the subject looks like to me in real life. If I do any adjustments in post, I usually have a program make adjustments automatically and 9 times out of 10, I change the adjustments & tone down the saturation because I don

Re: Post your best Macro shots
Very nice! I agree that the colors are great. And the drop was captured perfectly. Did you time that one exactly right, or use a burst?
-
Re: Post your best Macro shots
Thank you for the compliment, Jon!
This was done in Manual setting. After about 20 shots, this one and a couple others were timed good but for most ...I was either too quick or too slow on the trigger.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
Eam, Welcome to the Forums! I hope you don't mind a tip, try not to" center" the image perfectly (top to bottom and left to right). It usually looks better if you leave some room on the right side of the frame for the fish to swim into, since this fish is swimming towards the right. Keep posting.
Very nice shot Denise, it looks like it could be used for an Ad.
Burd, Welcome to the Forums.., very creative work with the fingerprint, the trigger and the bullet. Really nicely done!

Re: Post your best Macro shots
For Me, Failure once more. This morning I went to take a shower and found a little black spider in the tub---Well, now armed with my new 100L macro---I thought "what a great time to put this bad boy to good use". So I captured the spider in a little tupperwear dish and went ahead and took my shower. Afterwords, I began my full setup for this spider macro shot. The plan was to set up on my kitchen counter tops (Black Granite)--- tripod, tripple flash, 24 mm extension tube, orange background (posterboard), remote shutter release---spent 30 minutes getting the lighting just right, focus dead on, etc. Now its time to put my tiny model to work. Soooo, with remote in one hand, I grabbed the tupperwear dish and gently sprinkled the little guy out on the spot I had marked---All the time listening to the wife tell me "YOU BETTER NOT LET HIM LOOSE IN MY KITCHEN"----Well, all I can say is that he is now, LOOSE IN THE KITCHEN. The moment he hit the orange posterboard, he was gone, fastest little guy I have ever seen. Yes, I looked, She looked, for an hour, we looked, but no luck. Black spider on black countertops disappear with ease.
So I thought to myself, well, no use in wasting this setup, Lets go find a bug--After another hour of looking under every rock in the yard, behind every appliance, tool or box in the garage and I even looked in the water meter housing out buy the sidewalk---No luck, no bugs anywhwere. Now I am told it

Re: Post your best Macro shots
ROFL!!! I admire your dedication to macro photography!! I can see you will be putting that new lens to lots of good use once the bugs start appearing in abundance!
In the meantime, I might even consider paying your wife to make a video ofyou peeking under all the produce at Walmart and stealing their bugs or going up to the cashier and asking her to do a price check! [:P]

Great story, Very Funny!
Bob, tell your Wife that the reason there are no bugs in the house is because the spider ate them all!

Re: Post your best Macro shots
I should add though ...if your really determined Bob, you can always go to your local pet store. They sell plenty of bugs such as crickets, etc. for people to feed to their pets.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
These two were taken with my 70-200mm f/4 IS lens and the new "used" 77mm 500d close-up lens (w/ adapter) that I just bought off FM ...

Not the best IQ but ok in a pinch when I don't have my dedicatedmacro lens with or in a area where switching lenses wouldn't be a wise decision.
This was taken with my 100mm f/2.8 IS macro lens. One of the first perennials to acknowledge that spring is indeed coming!

This one was taken with my 90mm TS-E and a Kenko extension tube. Sitll alot to learn with this lens but it is definitely one of my favorites...

Re: Post your best Macro shots
Very nice work Denise. I really like the first pic and that close up lens does a surprisingly nice job. I have never used one, but I will be interested in seeing more shots with it.
BTW, no bugs at Walmart either----packed up for the day.

I like it, too, Denise!
I took a 500D close-up lens to China with me for use on my 70-200mmII, rather than packing the 100mm L Macro for the relatively limited amount of close-up shooting I expected to do. With the MFD of the 70-200 II, the 500D gets it to a respectable 0.60x magnification.
These were shot at a silk brocade factory/museum with the 70-200 II + 500D:

Re: Post your best Macro shots
After shooting our engagement rings, I decided to try my high school ring. It proved much tougher (because of the mirror-like onyx inset. At the end of the day, I founds something I liked even though I knew it wasn't perfect.

It is very tough to manage the reflections on types of jewelry. I do that on the side and had to do a bunch of stuff to manage reflections. Good luck experimenting. Looks good. Glad your venturing into the little life!

The onmidirectional lighting from a light tent can help. You can buy one like this, or make one yourself.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
On our recent stay at a lodge in the Ecuadorian jungle, I was absolutely amazed at all the little critters that come out, especially at night. I brought along a Canon G12, but never realized how good it is at macro photography. A small sensor can achieve much greater depth of field and much closer focus than an SLR, with of course some sacrifice in image quality. Take this shot, for example, of the world's largest ant species.

Many of them do focus very close. But DOF is not a function of sensor size. A DLSR with a lens used at the same aperture and with the same equivelant focal length would have exactly the same DOF.

How big was the ant? I was in Borneo some years ago and saw a *really* big one. I took a picture (with my G2... I guess that hints at just how many years ago....) of one of them, but it is too lame to post.
I find ants really tough because they move so fast... I don't know how you got that close focusing camera close enough to get this shot. Nice work.

My company, (forest management types), asked for a couple of shots for the cover of their newsletter & corporate brochure, so i took these, (Published at last LOL).
5d mk1 100mm 2.8 IS L macro (shot at 2.8) - I love this lens, so easy to use.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
Ade those shots are great. That pollen is going to be causing havoc in my sinuses soon. Claritin to the rescue!
Here is one shot from a set. I envision taking three similar pictures in creating a set around a White room with green accents. Wife is happy with the idea.

Canon 50D + 60mm 2.8 @ f11 1/200 ISO-100 Strobist: One 580exII @ 1/2power shot through 24" umbrella camera right.
I couldn't reflect light from the left side of the image to combat the shadow to my liking so I just cut it out in post and added a slight off white background for simplicity.
C&C if the mood strikes you.

Re: Post your best Macro shots
There a lot of great shots in this thread. So last month when I was buying a new 24-105L, I told my wife I would like to get a Macro lens some day. She told me to go ahead and get it... so I bought a 100mm L. It has done nothing but snow here so I have not had much of a chance to try it out. Well it was still snowing this week. I ended up going to an indoor garden about 80 miles away so I could try it out today. They also had a butterfly exibit also. I am real happy I bought this macro.
Here are a few shots from today (with a 7D). I hope you enjoy the viewing.

Conropl,
Congrats on your new lens. Sorry you had to drive so far to get a true first use out of it, but it sure seems as though your are enjoying it! Keep taking great shots and sharing them.

Conropl,
I Love them all, but #1 and #5 are my favorites!
I would like #3 better if the wings weren't clipped, but the bokeh is very creamy and I like the edge of the leaf!
I love all of the colors in #1 and the way the butterfly is holding onto the flower.
Number 4 is nice too, with great DOF and detail on the center of the flower.
Number 5 is very sharp and nicely composed as well.
What a Great Set!
