Hi all,
I haven't been here for some time... Joel's images, as always, are very hard to beat. Awesome images of Ospreys! And Bill, your shot of a raptor is great too!
These are the images from the last days. I don't have a car and my bicycle is broken now, so I'm stuck in my local area. But it's a good opportunity to make different photos of common birds, I think. So I was focused on the light for some time.
What do you think about these images? Questions, critique and comments are welcome. Also, you are welcome to my website:http://tadasphotography.com/

Nice one Joel....kind of reminds me of a Velociraptor from Jurassic Park.
How did you get this pic....I
Tadas......I like how you captured the nuthatch in the stream of light, very nice effect.

Thanks Joel....that explains the eye level shot. I really didn't think you were crazy enough to climb up to the nest. [:D]
William....nice capture of a tough action subject.
The Red tail hawk youngsters are still hanging around my backyard making numerous kills.....the banner birth year for the chipmunks is being greatly lowered....thankfully.
Here's a capture of one just after s/he's breakfast.

Bill
Nice shot Bill, I would love to have these birds in my backyard, I am going for a drive soon to see if I can find something similar.
William, Wonderful capture, under some very interesting lighting!
Bill, Great shot with a very nice exposure too!
Rich
Tadas N., I really like your picture of the coot. Great color
Bill W., great shot of the hawk.
Thanks for the advice, I wish I could have gotten eye level with the birds I was taking pictures of but they are privately owned and the closest I could get a clear shot is standing over them from a boardwalk in their pond. I hope in the future I can get the chance to get better shots since their owner is customer of where I work and he's very happy that I enjoy taking pictures of all his birds.
Here's another shot of the same black swan, which seemed to enjoy my presence compared to the other geese, ducks, and swans.

Wow! This thread gets better every time I pull it up. There are some fantastic shots on here. Not nearly up to the quality of the previous post, but I am learning with a telephoto prime. Hope no one minds all the pictures.

Thanks Bill and Tadas for the nice comments. I think all the regular participants in this thread are posting images that demonstrate improvement over time. I am seriously considering putting together some type of "workshop" for song bird photography in Kentucky or perhaps the Ospreys in South Carolina. I have never done such a thing but I think it would be fun and really cool to meet some of the group in person.

I spent some time at an Osprey's nest with 3 youngins hoping to capture some interesting interactions between the birds. I got nothing interesting, and the mother was clearly aware of my presence nearby. At one point she rose up, turned, and, well, I can only describe the view as a mother Osprey mooning a photographer! Oh well. Osprey 1, Photographer 0.

Great shots Joel and Adrian!
@ Adrian.
I realy like the last Kingfisher. The tighter framing gives it more impact. And the color are just the wayI like them, SATURATED!
@ Joel.
That is a lovely shot of a Bunting! I realy like the soft lighting and the darker colors, it really adds to the shot. Well done.
On a technical note, ISO 1000 is just a built in camera push and doesn't do as good a job as in the post.Try to useone stopincrements and adjust in the post later. And there was some thing about meta data and the whole bit that Daniel explaned but can't rember off the top of my head!
Now I just need find some time to capture those Waxwings that just arrived.
Keep em comming!
John.
@Joel- great work on the cormorant and the bunting.
@Adrian- that last shot is stunning, great capture.
Jayson and adrian, great shots!
i rode my bike around the NW coast of the Netherlands
(stavoren-harlingen) over easter, and saw so many different types of
bird balanced on grass/reeds like that. only had my 15-85 though so
didn't get any shots (not riding 250km with an extra 1kg of lenses even
to get a shot like that. and we would never have made it if i'd been
taking pics all the time).
now i'm back in australia, i'm heading to the coorong next spring to
try for some like that. something tells me i'll need to hire a 400 or
500+ for it though...
.
.
here's some of mine i took the day after i bought my 70-300L and rode
40km to the Hoek van Holland (where the canal to rotterdam hits the
sea). so many sea birds there diving for fish, could have stayed all
day, not perfect weather though.
First one i put together from 1700*1700 pixel crops, scaled it for
here. was testing the AF speed of the 70-300L + 7D combo, 8fps, 19 point
AF and tracking priority (not all from the same spot in the frame).
only missed once when it started its final dive to the water. all were
f/5.6, ISO100, 1/640s, 300mm.

.
.
and another one i like for the pose, cropped and 50% scaled:

and because i like being silly, one i took on the ride home the same day. Sharing for the pose and not the IQ.
light was fading a bit in the afternoon, ISO320, f/8, 1/400s, 300mm, 7D + 70-300L. near enough to a 100% crop, it's just showing its softness here although it shouldn't at f/8, maybe it's diffaction, i'm almost thinking i would have been better off at f6.3 and iso200. (maybe it's me but i think i could have gone a bit darker EV too).

Nice shots Denise....really like the Cowbird and the baby bird on the stump. Very sharp, nicely processed images.
I missed this thread while I was away, but it's good to catch up again. There have been too many great shots to single any out, but it's good that this thread remains one of the most popular.
One of the highlights of my holiday was spending a couple of hours watching a flock of blue-footed boobies diving for fish at Rabida Island, Galapagos.

These birds achieve speeds of over 60 mph (100 kph) on hitting the water. It looks quite chaotic when there are several birds diving in a small area at the same time. Injuries are not uncommon when one bird hits another underwater. With a bit of patience, practice and luck, it is possible to isolate some order from the chaos:
