As far as shooting remotely----I will probably set up and give it a try this weekend. It sounds like it might make a lot of things easier--My eyes aren't too good at close range so having a bigger screen (and the histogram) plus all of the controls might be just what I have been looking for. Now all I have to do is talk my wife out of her Laptop ;)---Of course, if she gives me any grief---thats just an excuse to go out and get that Macbook:)) Hmmmm "Auto Capture" I have to look that one up.
Thanks,

Here's a recent picture I took with my T3i and humble 55-250. Shot settings are f/8 1/1600 second ISO 400 at 250mm. The picture has been post processed to crop the image and enhance both contrast and saturation.

It's been awhile since I posted in this thread! I did a really rebellious thing today that I probably shouldn't have ...I took a 2 hour drive back to Horicon Marsh and spent the day shooting. I really thought there would be more birds than there were and I thought the fall colors would be better but I'm still glad I spent the day there! Fog was really thick in the morning but it turned out to be a pretty decent fall day!
Here are just a few shots that I have had a chance to look at ...

Joel, That's not fair:), I haven't seen an H-Bird in 3 days now---my feeders are still up, but no birds. Very nice shot.
BTW, I saw some cranes flying in this weekend---won't be long until the Bosque is full of them.---Cheers
Denise---This is now the second time I have responded, but the site doesn

Actually, at the end of most pp, I have been applying the "lazy high pass sharpening" to some extent that "w349" suggested in another thread. The only thing with that though is that it is real fine lines between too little, too much and just right ...I tend to apply too much half the time!
Female Purple Finch, I know.....it's not purple.....the male isn't purple either!

Some very inspiring shots in this thread. I will start with an Australian Ospray

Joel, You make the most common birds look like works of art----Excellent as usual---stop, no, thats not true---there is a line just to the right of the bird----ooops, thats just a smudge on my monitor---I was right the first time.
Denise, Love the solitary feel of the cormorant shot---nice job.

Thanks Bob for the kind words, I too am amazed at the beauty of little song birds when I get to see a close up detailed image.
I went for a walk down the river this afternoon to test out my new Samyang 35/1.4 vs 15-85, took my 70-300L along for the ride, then ended up taking more shots of these Rainbow Lorikeets.
Finally nailed one as good as Steve's a few pages back, 70-300L, f/6.3, 1/250, CPL, and setting-sun straight behind me, just on the border of the sweet yellow-light...

Gorgeous Lorikeet, I think you could make it even stronger by cropping some off the top so the bird isn
This is a shot from yesterday, it was unfortunately underexposed enough that I could not get great detail in the feathers so I tried some filters and came up with this

That is really a great shot Joel, I love the post----It really does give it the oil painting feel. Beautiful work.
Dr. C. This is a very nice shot. I can never get enough of these birds.
Thanks guys, I normally don't bother with the lorikeets because they're too fast, small, and far away (and even when they're not, they always seem to be on the other side of the flower and i never get a direct shot of them.
The above i posted was already cropped, i'll stick the original below. I've tried cropping it again, but cropping is one thing i always fail at.
I've been playing with rule of thirds, seeing as the Gimp gives nice guidlines when selecting rectangles. This one i've put the bottom-middle third line at the house-roof boundary, the middle-top line goes just about through his eye, the left-middle line is at his neck-colour line, and the stick goes through the middle of the right third.
So I don't know what looks better, i don't mind the original but cropping brings out more detail, any suggestions more than appreciated :)
.
So, original:

and newest crop:

Here is the crop I was suggesting....the only problem is the roof line in the BG is a little distracting but you cannot always control these things

Joel, that PP on the egret is very interesting, very creative. love it!. also nice wing position on the GBH in flight.
Dr. that was a great catch, Joel cropped it to the landscaping version which looks great, however I am kind of like the portrait version more because of the vertical branch and I like to see more orange color in the BG. so I edited your picture like this:

Nice timing, Joel! Very graceful shot!
Joel, very good exposure on the white, also like the pose of the egret!
I saw a shot somewhat similar on Juza's portfolio and he selectively darkened imagearound the Egret.
Here is the picture of what I am talking about,

Wow, that
Forgot to mention, I meant that you might want to try it.
