Thanks!
It's a fair question - I guess the answer has two parts. One, I like the lenses I have, and get a fair amount of use from all of them (except the 85mm f/1.8, which I hadn't used since I got the 85L - so yesterday, I sold the 85/1.8) - the combination of a bunch of good lenses allows me the versatility I want, since I shoot all kinds of subjects. Two, when I look at the price tag of a longer supertele (for me, the 500mm f/4L is the most interesting), and I compare that to the likely price tag of a forthcoming 1DsIV, I think I'd be better-served for much of my shooting by a FF body with excellent AF.
Now, if Canon comes out with a 5DIII that offers improved AF relative to the 5DII...then I'll get that and I might start thinking supertele.
Of course, given the ratio of MkI to MkII for the just-announced 300mm and 400mm supertele's, the 500mm f/4L IS II is likely to be in the >$10K range. True, I've spent in that range on my current lens collection, but I just don't see myself paying that much for a single prime lens.
Then again, when I first posted in this thread, I didn't see myself interested in the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS, at all. Yet this morning, I found myself with a ruler, confirming that the new 70-300mm would fit in Lens Case 2S and thus still workslip-locked to the side of a Lowepro Toploader Pro 65AW with 7D and standard zoom inside, for a quite versatile, convenient and small enough kit. Apparently, in 24 hours I've gone from being unimpressed with this new L lens to strongly considering purchasing it to replace my 70-300mm DO.
That gives me an idea - since I'm a neuroscientist working for a pharmaceutical company, maybe I should push for development of a drug to treat <span style="color: red;"]L-disease. [8-|]
Re: Canon Releases Six New L-Series EF Lenses And Accessories
A 100-400L? From Canon? never heard of it...[:P]
I've shot the 100-400 and I like it, but for the price I don't love it, like the 28-300 or the 35-350 before that. I just think spending close to 2 grand for glass that doesn't open up wider than 5.6 is crazy (super-teles aside). The strengths of such lenses are obvious; I just wish Canon would quit making vari-aperture L glass because the weaknesses of those lenses are obvious too.
I suppose it always comes down to a personal choice, what you value, what your budget is. I'm glad you like your 100-400L. If you ever change your mind about it and want to pick up a quick three hundred, call me! hehe...

You're really awful haha! They say: sick minds think alike, but I guess I'm just not as sick as you are...

What will happen in the next 24h? I would laugh my @$$ of if you showed serious interest in the new fish-eye lens hehe [:D]
Anyway please keep your money in your pocket until some decent test results get out [;)] Oh yes...or spend your money towards anti L-disease drugdevelopment(al)

True, but I suppose compromises have to be made somewhere. Compare Canon's 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 with Nikon's 200-400mm f/4 - the Nikon lens with it's constant f/4 aperture is 2.5 times the weight, several inches longer, and has a list price 3-4 times higher (for the Nikon I/II versions, respectively) than Canon's variable-aperture zoom in the same approximate focal range.
But I agree with you - I really like the 100-400mm, but I don't 'love' it (even without considering cost). Frankly, it's not even about the f/5.6 at the long end - when shooting small, somewhat close subjects like birds at 400mm, the DoF with f/5.6 is often too thin. If Canon made a a 500mm f/5.6L IS for under $2.5K, I'd take that over the 100-400mm, and I'd be sorely tempted by a sub-$2K400mm f/5.6L IS as well.

Oooo...a fisheye zoom. Cool!! [:P] Nope, sorry, not seeing it. If I decide to spend that much on what would probably be a rarely used lens, I think I'd get a 17mm or 24mm TS-E.

Absolutely. Plus, as Rich pointed out earlier, if they're going to announce a 1DsIV for Photokina, it seems likely that they'll announce at least one lens, maybe two, along with that.

Oh yeah! It's been confirmed, "L" disease. You've got a bad case of it and I'm not even a doctor. LOL!!

Wow,
Am I the only one who is happy with their current glass and body kit, has no desire to add or remove kit?

I guess I have different type of L disease, my symptom is that instead of using different lens for different situation, I tend to use my 300mm 2.8 for everything to get best IQ I can, sure sometimes it looked so ridiculous by holding a big white lens in my kids kindergarten but couldn't help it at all... and I guess there is no drug for that since we want to be sick like that. sorry, sounds like way off the subject.

Hmmm...an 8' MFD and something like 30' distance to frame a toddler (or closer to 50' if you have a crop body)...I guess you must have some pretty big rooms in your house, 'eh? Or you get a lot of shots with a nose and one eye...[:P]
