Love the slightly angled profile on the downy woodpecker, Joel and amazing detail!!
@jeanduccass - Great timing on this shot ...fantastic! Welcome to the forums!!
Denise
Thanks Denise, I like this pose as well because it's a little different for a woodpecker.
I am still sorting images from my visit to NM with Bob williams (I know, I am slow) ...here is one I processed this morning.

Oh man, that's a whole other story than the urban wildlife that a beginner like me finds around the corner in a fountain.
Great shot!

This was the scene out by my bird feeder just a few minutes ago. I boosted reds and blues and dropped the other colors to make the birds stand out. I think I have half the cardinal population of IL right here in my yard.

WOW!!! I never even see this many at one time in any of the nature preserves!! What the heck do you feed them to attract so many cardinals and blue jays too??? I have tried everything and have never been able to attract a woodpecker or blue jay! I only get one female and one male cardinal, a few chickadees, finches etc. ...oh, and of course the rodents with the furry tails!
My one very lonely cardinal ...

Joel,
I've been trying to learn post processing and made the updates below in PSE 10 to improve the highlight details. What do you think?

I buy these 50lb bags of peanut pickouts (I assume peanuts that failed some sort of inspection for human consumption) from a local Prairieland Feeds store. I also buy 40lb bags of black oil sunflower. I feed them daily unless we're away.
Here's a closer shot showing the peanut pickouts.

Yes, and some of them get quite large.

I was in Louisville yesterday helping a friend with a photo shoot at the Kentucky Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament. I had some time in the late afternoon to stop at a city park that usually has some nice ducks.

I'm not claiming this is that great of a picture, but it does have a natural looking perch! I put it up last weekend... wire tied a branch near my deck. I should come up something better later, but this is a start. We didn't have any sun the whole weekend hence the bad lighting.

The hard part is I'm finding the birds aren't that crazy about sitting on the perch. They stop by the feeder, eat, and then fly back to the tree line 30-40 feet back. Decent opportunities to photo on the feeder or suet cakes are easily 7 or 8 to 1 to them stopping on the perch. It must be a matter of placement primarily I guess.
Dave
I try to place the perch on the flight path from the trees to the feeder....you may also have to move the feeder to get everything working right.
Many times they will still fly straight to the feeder anyway, you just have to be patient and persistent.
I find they seem to like a perch that is simple....without so many little branches.
Another strategy is to use some type of hanging feeder and then when you put up a perch move the feeder right under it. Then move it back to it's original spot when you are done shooting.
This looked great on the camera LCD (sounds familiar?), but now I wish it had a little more DoF.
Fortunately the place (Alviso) is very close and has a lot of air traffic in the evening hours. The birds like the old salt ponds at the end of the SF bay.

another one from the same day. The set on flickr shows how the conflict developed. The egret on the left was willing to give in, but the one on the right was still not satisfied.
Just wish the quality was a little better.

nice shots Franco. Were these lucky shots while you were waiting for something else, or how did you get them? These birds usually don't sit in the same spot for long.
Arnt
Lol, I was actually just walking on the streets..then I saw them so I stalked them for a block and took a few shots of them behind some walls :) It was kinda lucky for me to take these shots.

Thanks (my bad grammar not withstanding). I used -2/3 exposure compensation and looking at the photo it appears I could have gone to -1 or even -4/3. White feathers don't exactly photograph well... The shadows help on the neck but not on the wings. Of course, not having to crop the middle 1.5 MP from my image would have been nice too...
Here are a couple of red-breasted and hooded merganzers from the other day. Rare that I can get this close to them.

Thanks for viewing...Brant
Very nice shots Brant. Where is the snow?
Thanks Pat....Parker River NWR is right on the ocean. It is actually a barrier island between Parker river and the Atlantic. So a combination of the proximity to the ocean and the fact that it had just finished raining (I think they are drying themselves in the pics) meant that there were only patches of snow....of course, I have ~6-8 in still at my house.
