I am in the process of getting all of my lenses and had been thinking that I'd get a 70-200 f/4 soon and the 100-400 L later....but the 70-300 L seems likesuch anice compromise lens (if the reviews/IQ are good) that I've spent part of my morning assessing whether I'll reallyneed the 300-400mm range. [:)]
I am beginning to think I don't as, on my 7D, my diagonal FOV is 5.1 degrees at 300 mm and 3.8 degrees at 400 mm (if my calcs are correct).

Personally, when I use my 100-400mm on my 7D,I am often (but not always) at 400mm. It really comes down to what you're trying to shoot, and how from it you are. If you're shooting birds and wildlife out in nature, generally the longer the focal length, the better (the main restrictions are how much you're willing to carry and your budget). If your 'birds andwildlife' is parakeets in your living room and large animals in zoo enclosures, longer focal lengths are less important.
You might find Bob Atkins FOV Calculator handy (scroll down a bit) - you can enter focal length, crop factor, and distance and it will calculate the XY dimensions of your field.
For example, with a 300mm lens on a 7D, at 15 feet from a subject, the FOV is 13.5x9". If that subject is a pretty, yellow goldfinch on a branch, that 4" tall bird will occupy 6.6% of the image frame. With a 400mm lens in that scenario, the bird will occupy 11.7% of the image. Either way, the shot is probably going to require some cropping, but the extra 100mm of focal length means only about half as much cropping, and therefore less noise in the final image. Then again, if all you intend is posing images here and printing 4x6" photos, crop away...
You're right in that this new 70-300mm L does seem like a clear compromise between the 70-200mm f/4L IS and the 100-400mm. But the MTF charts seem to show the new 70-300mm L is slightly sharper than the 70-200mm f/4L IS, which is in turn sharper than the 100-400mm. So, if the new 70-300mm is a compromise between the two on focal length and aperture, but as sharp as or sharper than the 70-200mm f/4L IS, it's a pretty good compromise.

Oh yeah! It's been confirmed, "L" disease. You've got a bad case of it and I'm not even a doctor. LOL!!

Beware, The "L" disease if not treated properly will turn in to "L Prime". The disease will cost you at least 3 times as much to treat and in some cases even more.

I guess I have different type of L disease, my symptom is that instead of using different lens for different situation, I tend to use my 300mm 2.8 for everything to get best IQ I can, sure sometimes it looked so ridiculous by holding a big white lens in my kids kindergarten but couldn't help it at all... and I guess there is no drug for that since we want to be sick like that. sorry, sounds like way off the subject.

This is classic confirmed "L Prime".If you find yourself saying things like "nothing but the best IQ will do" and "I can always crop, I don't need a Zoom" then you may have the first tell tale signs.
Re: Canon Releases Six New L-Series EF Lenses And Accessories
How to avoid L diease and its more serious cousin.
If one does not use a specific lens at least 10+ times on every shoot, one should not own that lens.

Hmmm...an 8' MFD and something like 30' distance to frame a toddler (or closer to 50' if you have a crop body)...I guess you must have some pretty big rooms in your house, 'eh? Or you get a lot of shots with a nose and one eye...
<div style="clear: both;"]</div>
well I should have said that I tend to use my 300mm wherever available,I did get some face only shorts though, but on the other hand, the favorite shorts picked by my family members and friends were mostly like those shots taken with the 300mm. sometimes it's just the feeling.
BTW, I'v noticed that you have about 6 lenses in that 70mm-400mm(most of them are in 70-300) range and you still want to add that new $1500 lens? man, how much money you want to put in to that range but leave a big prime aside... I know you have your reasons.....
anyway you might think I'm crazy too, but as long as we enjoy what we have.......[:D]

thank you Doc for your correct diagnosis , but I don't want to be treated anyway[:D]
Re: Canon Releases Six New L-Series EF Lenses And Accessories
BTW, I'm not speaking for John, but possible reasons for not wanting a long prime are clear. If you don't want anything much heavier than the 100-400 and require IS, that eliminates all canon primes over 200mm.

if you are really sick(L disease), you will think this just an excuse for not getting the big lenses[:D]
but that's true, they are way too heavy, so I'm using my 400mm 5.6 more often now when shooting birds.
