Re: Post your best current shots
Here is oneI took a few weeks ago, but just did a B&W conversion on it. The ferry trip from Brisbane to Stradbroke Island takes about 50 minutes and in spite of the sand mining gouging out the heart of the island, there is a tropical paradise just across the bay from Brisbane.

Nice shots Ade, my whippet is a lot more aloof than the Iggies, but they are so graceful when they move. Much like myself, back in the day, cough, cough, splutter.

Yes they do look sweet Denise. Rich light golden brown colours, I can't decide whether I'd like a shirt that colour or a cookie.

Re: Post your best current shots
Yesterday afternoon I went to my favorite place by the sea for a moment of piece and quiet after a busy day at work. Of course I brought my camera. There were unusually many swans hanging around in the late afternoon sun and some of them were posing nicely.

I was close to getting a really nice "swan heart" picture but they wouldn't cooperate all the way. This one is the closest I got. (Tempting to do a little PS cheating but it just wouldn't be the same.)

Just around sunset I headed home and suddenly I heard the characteristic sound (quite loud) of a flying swan behind me. I turned around and saw it pass just a couple of meters on my left. Unfortunately I was too slow and only got a shot from behind of it heading asea.

Re: Post your best current shots
Doesn't happen very often. Sometimes you just happen to be in the right place at the right time.
They are very rare around here. TodayI managed to get a picture of the very rare wood duck.

The bokeh was soft and creamy and dappled with soft light, I was pretty happy with this shot.
But why was I so lucky? Sure I was prepared, I had been waiting in my "hide" for ages. But why did he pick my back yard?
I'll never know, he just marched on in.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5097/...904059c4_b.jpg
Ya gotta love those marchin'boots on the old wood duck.
I know I probably should have posted this in the "best bird shots", but some of those guys wait for days to get a shot of a rare bird like this.[:D]
Thanks for viewing.

Re: Post your best current shots
Jayson, what is the black and blue bird? looks fantastic, we dont get them over here, (UK), it's a bit like our jackdaw?
And Steve, you are lucky to be in the right place at the right time there, we get plent of wood pidgeons, but the duck is very elusive, well done!
-
Re: Post your best current shots
Steve, I'm afraid you have misidentified your visitor. Wood ducks look like this (male on left, female on right). I have never seen one. You might have been referring to the Australian wood duck, which looks like this.
In either case, I think the features in your picture, especially the shape of the bill, the body size, the plumage and the footwear, rule out the possibility of it being any sort of "wood duck". I think what you captured was the remarkably common "wooden duck". If it has to wear those boots everywhere, it will soon become a lame duck.
Ade is right about wood pigeons, they are common visitors to British gardens. This one visited my garden yesterday. I couldn't get a clear shot through the kitchen window, but you only really need a clear shot for clay pigeons.

Re: Post your best current shots
Hit up Bryce Canyon on Thursday. I absolutely love the southwest! There are so many beautiful landscapes to capture! Also, while walking through Zion the other day I saw so many people with $1,000+ cameras and $1,000+ lenses and it was making me very jealous as I only had my T2i with the 18-55mm kit lens. Then I realized that they where all shooting in "Auto" mode with their little pop up flashes going off while they are trying to photograph something hundreds of yards away and it made me feel much better [:P]

Re: Post your best current shots
Impressive looking place there Baker, and a nice pic, just goes to show, its not what you got, its what you do with it! My only criticism would be, you should have used the pop up flash [:D]LOL.
-
Re: Post your best current shots
@Baker, nice shot, majestic landscape you have there.
@Andy, now I "wooden" want to get in an argument about the provenance of my wood duck. Your pictures are impressive, I think my duck may be a little short of full winter plumage.
BTW, nice line about the clay pigeon. [:D]

Re: Post your currently shot pictures
Steve, loving those shots. Always wanted to visit Australia, never had the opportunity though.
Here are some shots you may be able to relate to more than most of the people who follow this thread. I play rugby at a high school level in Minnesota, and a few of my coaches are on St. Paul's team, the St. Paul Pigs, so I went to their match today and got some pretty good shots.
All of these were shot with a Canon T1i and my 70mm-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens.

Re: Post your currently shot pictures
Nice action shots Comalley, the tell tale sign of very little padding is a sure sign of an Aussie football game, whether it is rugby or league or AFL. I pity poor number 13 in the last shot, his knee looks as though it is about to have some extreme force applied to it. You got to love amateur sport, they are out there playing for fun and all have to go to work on Monday, but are playing like their lives depend upon it.
I miss the smell of linamint in the mornings.
I can feel the grim determination.

Here's one I took last night:

Canon XSi, EF-S 15-85 IS, f8, 10s, iso 200, EX 580 II flash fired manually off-camera (at 1/16 I believe) to help fill the color in the flowers.
I've been trying to get more night shots lately. Not very good at it generally, but I do kind of like this one.

Re: Post your currently shot pictures
These are some of my favorites I've taken since I got my 100mm f/2.8L IS macro last week. Wow, this lens is amazing! Takes some getting used to, not having the ability to zoom, and even more having such a long focal length (I'm used to my 17-55). But wow, this thing takes excellent shots, at least compared to what I'm used to. The 17-55 is supposed to be really good, but this lens really lives up to the L reputation!
Sorry there are so many! I can't help myself...

Re: Post your currently shot pictures
Really good shots Alex, I was thinking about getting the 135mm, but have been taking similar shots with my 100mm macro and the IS really lends itself to portrait work and even landscape shots with a different perspective.
The colours and contrast on the second hut shot are very dynamic. And that puddle shot is great.

Re: Post your currently shot pictures
I'll give everyone a snapshot of what my life is like, as if I haven't probably said too much in the past.
Friday lunch time and I manage to convince my beloved to come with me and a few friends to one of my long lunches. She normally just rolls her eyes and let's these things happen, but would prefer to stay out of it. This time she comes.
Well everything is going smoothly and we are all having a good time, when the chef, Peter a mate of mine, brings out a marron that he has had flown over from Western Australia. What's a marron? Well it is bigger than a prawn/shrimp, bigger than scampi, not as big as a lobster. They are a freshwater animal and are usually about twelve to fourteen inches long and black in clour. Peter's Dad is having about 30 of these things flown over every Friday. The plane trip is similar in distance from New York to L.A.
So these things arrive alive and this prawn on sterroids is squirming around on the plate and everyone at the table is admiring it and thinking a $70 marron course might be something we could share next time we come in.
Everyone except my beloved. Peter takes his prize catch away and she who must be obeyed says, "I want one."
I said, "We are about to start dessert, haven't you had enough?" She said, "Nooo, I want one." I said, "What do you mean?"
She said, "I want one, I want to take him home."
I said, "I'm not cooking one of those things at home, eat it here next time." She punched my arm and said, "You bloody well won't be cooking him, I'm going to save one and keep him."
I tried to explain that a chef that flies agiant prawn4000 kilometers and can sell it for 70 bucks isn't going to give the critteraway. She would have none of it. She pleaded for me to get her one.
The chef walked past again and she beckoned him over and said, "Do you have a runt?" He obviously said, "What!!" She said a "runt" a small one that doesn't measure up that he might find trouble selling.
Well, what do you know? There was one in the batch that was about half the size of all the others. Only thing was that it wasn't black like the rest, it was blue, a royal blue. And she could have it if she wanted. For free. She was happy as. We have a small damin my yard and the plan was to drop him in there. Well, that was the plan it hasn't worked out that way yet.
So I would like to introduce you all to Louie the Marron.

The dogs are very inquisitive.

So for now Louie is in a tank and my beloved has a warm fuzzy feeling that she managed to save a critter from a pot of boiling salty water.
I don't know what's going to happen next. I know I have been banned from buying crusty bread and garlic butter. Hmm,I have some Chardonnay left as well.
Thanks for viewing and reading.
