Sampsa - Yes I'd be happy to jot down my learnings from aurora photography. I'll start a separate thread and cover off the major points that I have discovered along the way. Lapland should be an excellent place for viewing!

Here is a shot from yesterday. In the Rockies, the larch trees turn gold during September and eventually lose their needles (I think they are the only coniferous trees that do this). It makes for a wonderful show, and we always look for new places to see them. You generally need to hike above 2000 metres in elevation (which is about 500 metres above grade) to see them.

Went on another hike today to view the larch trees at their peak colour. What a difference a few days makes... temperature of -4 C and plenty of fresh snow! I used a two-shot HDR to capture this view of Eiffel Lake, near Lake Louise in Banff National Park.

I think you're right, they are the only coniferous to lose their needles, at least in Europe. We have a lot of larches in our mountains and some tourists think they are sick. Our larches are turning gold and then orange a bit later than yours though, so we still have to wait for about a month before we can see this happen. I'm already looking forward to this, as it provides some of the most spectacular views of the year.

Bald cypress down in the swamps in the south also loose their needles. (there are a few other conifers that also do this) I think all the conifers that do this are pretty unique and neat to see.

Great shots of the Larches though. I really love the first one.

We just call them Tamaracks, beautiful in the fall, but they are a larch too.

Mostly a lucky shot. I was tracking him as he flew overhead and didn't see the sun coming up until it nearly blinded me in the viewfinder.:cool:

Another example of how easy photography is out here: Today's sunrise at Quarry Lake, Canmore. I just had to fall out of bed, drive a whole half mile, and set up the tripod. I have to say I really love the Lee Big Stopper solid ND filter... it is quickly becoming my favourite.

Superb shot Jonathan. There must have been next to no wind! The plants in the front and trees in the back both look sharp still even with a 2 minute exposure!

Thanks Dave - Yes you're right, it was perfectly still, and yet the clouds were moving just enough to produce the soft blur I was hoping for. Once in a while a fish would jump and cause the water to ripple, making me freak out a bit. But fortunately it didn't show up in the image.

Almost bought a complete Lee kit with filters, foundation kit, adapter rings, and the Big Stopper. Just didn't quite have the needed funds in my Paypal account at the time. Was kicking myself.

Awesome shot, Jonathan. Shows what magic can be worked with those filters.

From tonight. Balloonfest at Shelbyville, IL. Maybe a bit of vertical distortion here, but mostly the balloons were leaning that far because of the wind. It really shortened the show and kept them from offering tethered rides.

I'm sure the Big Stopper is great filter, but screw on "black glass" ND filters work pretty well too and may cost less. I'm using the Hoya ND X400 and have been happy with it so far, unlike Jonathan though I greatly struggle with foliage moving during my exposures :-)

I've used stacked filters to replicate black glass. They do indeed work. But you need to focus first and then mount the glass without affecting the focus. Much easier to do with a Lee setup.

Have you tried focusing using live view with the filter mounted? The camera tries to simulate the exposure so I think this may work for you.

Johnathan, your 10 stop Lee filter is serious stuff but to be able to compute and execute a 2 stop hard grad on top is photographic prowess at its best

While we still haven't seen too much Autumn colors around here, this weekend looked like we had skipped a season and gone right into Winter. It's not unusual, but it's always a nice surprise to wake up to a view this. Taken literally jumping out of my bed...

Those lines are big fences made of metal. Their purpose is to prevent avalanches from forming at the top of the mountain. There are several villages on this mountain, all the way down to the main valley. From top to bottom, it's more than 2000 meters high, so even a small avalanche forming at the top could have dramatic consequences once it reaches the lower parts of the mountain.
I wanted to climb on this mountain this Fall, and I still hope to do it if the snow goes away before it's too late. The trail goes right through those fences, so if I'm able to take a good picture of them, I'll show you what it looks like.

I have a lot of photos that I am still working through from this past weekend. But I've processed a few that I liked. These were from the "Water Fire" in Providence Rhode Island. I've heard about it for years, this is the first time I've went.

By the way, if anyone has suggestions on how to take photos of fire with the background, I'd be interested. The DR is killing me.....and no, I don't think an extra 2 stops would make that much of a difference ;)....

About the DR - I have no idea, I don't think they make a big enough fill flash yet. I think found a good balance between scenery and fires in pictures 2-4

Took this picture of my father's girlfriend's daughter during a little photoshoot we did yesterday. She's 3 and a half and the most precious little girl I have ever met.

It was my first time in this very special place. The little house is a shelter for people who climb in the Mont Blanc massif. It's been built in 1927 by members of the Swiss Alpine Club, right on the top of a cliff, facing an incredible scenery. You can only see a small part of it on this picture. The house was closed when I went there, but it's still open during the whole Summer, with a guy staying there for more than two months to welcome the mountaineers and cook them something before the night.

The hike to get there was quite difficult, especially in the snow for the last few meters (falling wasn't really an option), but the reward was well worth the effort : I was the first to go there since the snowfall, and the only one on this particular day. I was pretty lucky, as it is a very popular place.

We have a lot of these alpine shelters around here. Lately, it has become a popular goal for hikers, as they are usually quite easily reachable (technically speaking, they are remote and the hike won't be short) This one is iconic because it's a great example of how clever the people who built it were, and its architecture is as traditional as it can be. While the environment is really hostile, with the whole area covered with rocks falling constantly from the mountains, they built this house on the only spot where it could last more than a year. And it's still there today.

During the hike, I couldn't stop thinking about those guys who brought every wooden part of the house on foot (it made my camera gear feel lighter than usual). The nearest road is 1250 meters lower. At least, there were enough stones all around, so they didn't have to carry those.

Thanks all for your very kind comments. As I'm planning to visit more of these shelters next year, I may show you some more in the future.

Hi, this weekend I was covering the final rounds in "TV-pucken", Sweden's biggest youth hockey tournament. This is a traditional tournament for regional teams of selected 15 year olds. Of course there were a few memory cards filled, but I thought I'd share only one shot from the moment right after the final game was over. One thing about this tournament is that it's broadcast by national public service TV - quite unusual for youth hockey. The production isn't too far from what you see when "the big guys" play, and this makes it special for the guys.

Hi everyone - I'm back from a fantastic adventure to the shore of Hudson Bay, in Nunavut Canada (about 60 degrees north latitude). I stayed at a fly-in lodge and watched the bears walk right by each day... it was well beyond exciting. This shot gives a bit of perspective of the layout, and the electric fence that kept the bears out. Stay tuned for more as I sort through the 7000 pictures I took!
