Well...the moon just appears as a very bright point of light and one can

Really great captures, gents!
Also, Nate, thanks for the moon tips. I tried it last night and was really pleased with the results.
Ok, Here is what I captured. These were taken with a 7D, I believe the colorful ones were taken with the 70-200 f/4 L IS and 1 Kenko 1.4xTC and the first one was with two Kenko 1.4xTC stacked. I didn't take into account that the moon would move as much as it did during a 5 second exposure so none of my closeups during the total eclipse were crisp. Total dumb@#$ move.[:@]Of course at 18 degrees, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the camera outside. Anyway, here were some of mine...

Great captures everyone. I don't know about everyone else, but 3 a.m. waiting for this thing to happen was a little too late. Maybe the next time it will be earlier and my grandkids can take some notes.
Jason the shots you took look pretty good to me. I did the same thing as you which is using shuttterspeeds over 1 sec when it got dark, I didn't realize that the moon had motion blur over 1 sec. We should have done what Hawk did which was to raise the ISO and shorten the shutter speed (faster) so that the images would be sharper. Don't let the shutter-speed fall below 1/2 sec due to motion blur of the Moon.
Here's my set!
7D: 300mm f/2.8L IS 2X extender @600mm, tripod, cable release, un-cropped (except the first one)
EXIF data ranges from f/6.3 @ 1/500sec to f/5.6 @ 2 sec. at ISO 100

Thats all Folks!
Well, I have learned a few things for next time out. First, is that a longer lens would be better as opposed to the 2X extender, but more importantly is to raise the ISO as the eclipse is happening, since it gets darker. I was increasing the shutter speed duration because I figured I had a good tripod, but it seems that anything over approx. 0.5 seconds seems to cause motion blur just from the Moon moving. The shots looked good on the 3 inch LCD. I started to notice they where getting blurry but by then it was pretty much over.
I'm aware that some of the shots are soft and I hope to do better next time!
C&C and discussion are Welcome!
Thanks for viewing,

Nicely done Rich
The shots that were taken when the moon was getting to be a smaller crescent looking through the camera without live view, you could see the white bright part of the moon and the full orange shaded area behind it.
I tried to capture similar to what you have in your #12 picture. Only more so trying to get the whole orange area. Maybe in photo shop a person could tone down the bright crescent and brighten up the orange part in the shadows. For a few frames I had a CP filter on trying to see if I could kill the moonlight. It just turned it blue. I might try it in photoshop when I get time.
I think you would have been fine with the 1.4x instead. I have a 2x but have never been happy with the results on either my 300mm F2.8L or the 500mm F4L.
I think its a good lesson though, if for some reason you ever want to have a crescent or full moon in one of your pictures a person would know over a second and half it will blur.
It was fun
Thanks Hawk!
It definitely was very cool. I could try and adjust the settings a little bit too, like toning down the reflections and bring out the orange like you had suggested.
As I'm looking through the EXIF data, it seems that there is some motion blur even at 0.6 sec. so the best advice I can give someone would be to try and keep the shutter speed faster than a 1/2 sec. by raising the ISO.
Ok.. are you ready for the next one!
Here's the schedule: June 15th 2011 and Dec. 10th, 2011
I didn't realize that these occur approx. every 6 months.
