Re: Post your best bird shots!
Hi! wuhsinman
Welcome!
I never saw anything like this, the bird, pose,bg,post and composition look very different, very interesting shot, and I like it!
here is one of mine, I'v started to edit more in DPP.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Thanks for looking! The edits in DPP to Colonel Blackbird including cropping, some minor Tone Curve adjustments, a little contrast adjustment to bring out the dark side eye and some more breast feathers, and the slightest hint of Saturation increase (+1). Here is the original:

The funny thing is that it was taken from the front seat of my car. i've seen people say that you should never have anything man made in a bird shot, but these blackbirds naturally choose fences and such to display on so it seems quite appropriate

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Nice shot Shea I don't think I've ever even seen a humming bird's nest before. my only real criticism is the dof doesn't cover the entire nest minor but a little distracting, looks like it focused a little more toward the back of the bird.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Well if you look at the ISO you can deduce that I'm already running low on light (max aperture in this configuration btw), and have you ever tried to photograph one inch in a windy tree @ 420mm? I was lucky to get this much and participated in the show & tell section as I was not seeking a critique anyway. No hard feelings, just what is. -Shea

Re: Post your best bird shots!
That's is apparently your perception, but if you had read more carefully I think you would find I expressed no hard feelings and brought good information to the table. I'll skip your spelling and grammar lesson.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Great shots here you all.
I'm seeing that a lot of folks are using the 300 f4 w/ 1.4 TC. I am considering purchasing this combination. Any of you find yourselves wishing you had gone with the 400 5.6 instead? Specifically in the arena of your bird shots.
That probably deserves another thread, but i figured the two folks I saw would say something short and sweet or even message me as to not fill this thread with another threads topic.
Dave.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Dave,
I'm using the 300mm 2.8L with and without the 1.4 TC. It's a great lens and so is the 300mm f/4. I've had it for about 2 years but I wish I had gone for the 500mm f/4 instead. Ithink the extra reach would be very beneficial albeit at a high cost.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Long-billed Curlew
7D + 500 f/4L IS - f/4, 1/1600, ISO 200, manual exposure, handheld
http://www.pscvn.org/members/308/3-1...8-31-38_PM.jpg
This is one of my very first images made with my 7D. Ordered it from B&H on Monday and got it yesterday at 4:30pm. There was not much time to shoot and I needed to charge the batteries anyways. So what would I do in the mean time, reading the manual of course [:)]. Today I spent the entire day getting used to the new camera and here is my observation of the 7D after a short period of time with it.
- The files are huge, the camera captures a lot of details, since the files are so large, when viewed at 100% it does give the impressionthat the image is soft, move back half a foot or so and it will get sharper [:)]
- The 8fps speed is awesome!
- So far AI Servo AF isfast (faster than my 40D)consistent and accurate. The image above I used AF Point Expansion. I find that it's easier to keep the birdlock infocus when using the center and the adjecent points, instead of the center point alone. For everything else I use single point.
- The high resolution LCD screen is so nice that it can be very misleading, you need to zoom all the way in to see if the image is sharp or not, otherwise everything is nice and sharp.
- Noise wise, it's similar to my 40D, BUT considering the 40D's sensor is only 10 mpx, the 7D's noise perfomance to me is very impressive for an 18 mpxAPS-Ccensor.
- Beside spending $1800 for this new camera it looks like I need to spend more for a new computer, the files are so large that it's a paint in the @ss to process the RAW files
- Build quality is excellent, the camera feels very solid in your hand.
- The BG-E7 is very nice too, I think it's the best battery grip that canon has made so far for its non 1D series cameras. I agree with Bryant that the shutter releasebutton on the grip is much more sensitive than the one on the camera.
- Zooming in/out is a bit slower than my 40D (at least it seems like it) maybe because of the large files or the high resolution LCD?
- I think my 7D overexposes about 1/3 to 1/2 of a stop compares to my 40D, 99% of my images are much brighter. I constantly looking for blinkies, but there wasn't any so I didn't adjust my exposure. Gotta watch that from now on.
Over All the 7D is an awesome machine, I'm liking mine very much.
Thanks for viewing the image, comments and critiques are welcome. More 7D images to come in the near future.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Congrats Nate!
I got my 7D yesterday too. Since it takes the same battery as my 5dII I was set right out of the box, except for the weather here the last two days. I found the video tutorials that Canon posted very insightful.
Just playing around shooting on the porch, I did notice the images aren't as sharp as I'd hoped. But there is something striking about the images though. The AF is sweet even though I haven't really put it to the test yet but the versatility is impressive.
The thing I was blown away with, especially after shooting with the 5DII for a year and half is the build quality. This thing feels like a tank. The thing I noticed right away was the battery and CF doors. The fit tight and are spring loaded. My 5DII feels so junky in these two areas.
I'll actually get to put it to the test shooting peewee football and an air show this weekend. I'm really excited to have the 7D for the air show.

It seems that everyone get their new 7D's - I want one too! [:P]

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Congrats Nate!
Sounds like a lot of 7D experience is coming our way between you and Keith. Can't wait to see more results.
By the way, Keith I would love to see some of your air show shots when you have time. My bro is going to oshkosh this summer and I might join him so it would be nice to see what compositions will work well for that scene. Thanks.
Also love all the bird shots here. They are really cool and good. Keep it up.

Nice GBH.
I dare not say how hard it's been to get the red-wing blackbird with my setup... [:|]they're all over where I live, but are difficult to approach. Success. I found a spot where I got many good shots today.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Nice shot James.
I suggest you use a birdfeeder and perch setup; you'll constantly be able to get within 10' of the birds and you won't have the "branch growing out of bird's head" problem.
-
Re: Post your best bird shots!
Backyard setup using a feeder and hide. Canon 40D, 300mm 2.8 + 1.4 TC. This was taken at dusk using a flash which gives the illusion of the background being very dark....I was trying to achieve this intentionally.

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Brendan, good pt about the the branch growing out of his head. Such a shame to lose that photo because of that, I took care of the branch in pp and re-uploaded, but in the future I'll try to handle it at capture.
I must say yesterday and today were some of the must fruitful days of shooting I've ever had. The sheer diversity of birds I saw was awesome. I've got material to post for a while...
I wish I had shots of Raptors, but this will do for now [:)]

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Well done, good low angle and good head angle on the bird. Nice exposure too. I would consider cropping so that there is more canvas to the right side, ie less of a vertical crop. Give it a space to swim into so to speak.
Great shot!

Re: Post your best bird shots!
Nice Nate. I love how the bird's beak is open. Normally I wouldn't criticize such a shot, but the only flaw for me are the shadows on the wing. Besides that.....I'm coming up empty.

A little over exposed, but it was some pretty harsh lighting.
