Daniel; I think he was mesmerized by your Nikon camera.
Great detail.

Very nice work, interesting looking bird, I don't think we have those here in Ky. I agree, the first one in my favorite.

These are beautiful birds and they don't appear too afraid of you. We only have Bobwhite Quail here in Ky.and no way you get this close. Well done!
Bob,
I have tried to comment on your Phoebe image but for some reason I keep getting an error message so I will post without a quote.
The bird is on the borderline of being too sharp. I like your BG work but you need to clean up the area between the feet and the little speck of green foilage by the head.
Overall you did well with PP. Looks like it's time for you to give up LR:rolleyes:
Thanks Joel, Yeah, I noticed both of those areas after I posted. This was the first time I really played with any of this---More of an experiment than anything else----And this part of the work was all done in Photoshop CS5-----Give up LR, Never, Never, Never. Everytime I use photoshop, It reminds me why I should stick with LR.
Could someone please ID this bird for me? I saw him down by Lake Michigan today and at first I thought it was a male kingfisher but his beak isn't really long enough to be that I don't think ...

Yep, it is an Eastern Kingbird! First I had ever seen and there were a few down by Lake Michigan yesterday & they did let me get fairly close! Thanks for the identification!
Sorry about the mistaken ID
I am visiting my daughter this weekend in Tampa, Florida. We are getting ready for the arrival of our first grand child in July:)
I couldn't resist bringing my camera and I got this Great Egret by the roadside at a public park

Most definitely no problem Joel ...it was all educating for me to look up and note the differences in the two birds! Lovely shot of the Great Egret and congrats on the soon-to-be grandpa news!!

Really nice JJ....love that first one staring straight at you with all the feathers ruffled up.
Denise .. the silhouette is cool and great color on the grackle. I agree with you about Florida, the birds here are almost tame.
Sadly I am flying back to Ky this afternoon...I did briefly visit Ft. DeSoto State Park yesterday afternoon.....lots of birds there, need to return with more time.
Some shots from Ft. DeSoto, Florida.

Thanks Denise and Joel, in FL, not only lots of birds, also many different kinds of birds and easy to reach, indded the heaven of birds.
the EF-S 15-85 is not really a bird lens, but in some parks they are so close, I could not resist. Almost like shooting in a zoo

Nice diving Pelican .... must have been so close you got wet :) Well done with short focal length!
Cool shot!
Great job Arnt!

I spent some time around the Scottish islands recently. I managed to catch a few shots of birds that we don't often see in this forum:

Thanks everyone,
yes I was close, maybe 30 feet away in a row boat. Uncropped version is here. Makes me wonder what Joel or Bob or Denise could shoot there.
Some other pictures I even took sitting comfortably on a park bench. Downside of these parks is, that you almost all the time have humans in the background, see here and here.
Arnt
Arnt, I looked at your flicker page, you got several really cool pics. The one of the Tern in front of the colorful sail is cool. You can tell from your images that the birds there are very accustomed to humans. Great location for getting close but, as you said, the challenge is to get a good background.
Thanks Joel,
well, if you like it, I think it qualifies for being posted :-)

Maybe I overdogded the bird a bit. I also wasn't sure if I like the cropped or uncropped version better. And yes, most pictures have some humans in the background. Unless one wants that as a theme ("Urban wildlife"), it is a challenge.
If you want undisturbed backgrounds, the bay wetlands are just around the corner, but then the 85 will certainly not cut it.
Arnt
The Snowy Egret in breeding plumage is spectacular!
