I really like this kind of thing...reveals your artistic vision for an image and you have a gift for it.

Thank you! Health issues have been keeping me from shooting much but today I gathered enough energy to bring out the camera for a bit! I do see my photography skills have taken a back slide but my passion is still as strong as ever!

Thank you, Dave! If you don't mind my asking, what did you use for your homemade light box? This is perfect and I was wanting to ask you before when you posted the 65mm lens for sale. The photo of that was so perfect, I just had to buy the lens!
Thank you, Raid ...for the compliment on the photo and for the "young lady" reference! :)

So, a friend knew somebody that knew somebody that didn't need their season tickets to the Celtics last week. So, I got to go...had a good time. As I was there for fun, I only brought my EOS-M and 22 mm f/2.

I'm back from another cold and wild adventure to the arctic, where I spent 10 days on the icy shores of Baffin Island, Canada. The object was to photograph newborn polar bear cubs after they have emerged from their dens, and we had very good success. I now have the happy chore ahead of me of sorting through 13,000 images. I've already picked out a half-dozen, and posted them on my website. Here are a few examples. If you have any questions about the area, the gear, or the techniques involved, feel free to fire away!

Glad the trip was successful Jonathan. The images look great.
Absolutely stunning Jonathan.
As usual Jonathan fantastic shots, words always fail me when I try to talk about your work.
With a Polar Bear sniffing the wind I would be running away as fast as I could.
I wondered how you could top some of those aurora borealis shots. Well, you DID top them!
Thanks very much! This was a rather difficult trip to do, from an effort and discomfort point of view. We spent long hours being pulled in sleds behind snowmobiles, banging across the bumpy sea ice. It was cold enough that I got frostbite on my face, in spite of all my experience and preparation. Bear sightings were of course not guaranteed, and for the first 3 days we saw nothing at all. But then the guides started having success, and it just got better from there. Being around the bears was not dangerous at all, because the mother's instinct is always to run away. So the object was to catch them near an iceberg, of which there are plenty in the area, frozen into the sea ice. As we approached, the bears would just climb up the iceberg to safety. From there we could walk around and fire at will. The Mothers would quickly realize that we weren't a threat, so she'd be quite relaxed and the cubs would also follow her lead.
As a bonus, we also had a few great nights of northern lights:

Thanks for your interest!
These are awesome pics of the polar bear family. My favorite is the middle one with the mother and cub who have apparently just ate.
Thanks! It wasn't hard to find an interesting foreground object... there were lots of these ice mounds right outside the cabin. The only challenge was the cold weather, but I'm used to that by now. I guess I really should have brought the 14 mm lens... the 24 mm wasn't wide enough for the huge aurora displays that happen up there. It really reinforces my view that it's worth going north just for the aurora alone. When you are under the aurora oval on a clear night, the show will be on. None of our nights were even considered "big" events... it was all run-of-the-mill by northern standards.
I made a selfie on that same ice block a little later that evening... kind of fun:

Very cool selfie, Jonathan. Nicely done.
Here again is another shot supporting Brian's recent praise of the 55-250STM. Simply an amazing lens for the price.

Just as a follow-up to my earlier post about my recent trip to Baffin Island, I'd like to share this article that has been published recently on the Canadian Nature Photographer website. In it I give a few more details about the trip from the photography perspective. Hope you enjoy! And please let me know if you have any questions regarding the gear or other elements of the trip.
