I like the owl, good job on retaining details inthe white feather. The crop is too compressed, a little room infront of the bird should add a sense of the bird flying toward. [:)]
This was my father's day present! I have been going to Maine for 30 straight years with the same group of high school friends, and on the way out we found this guy just off the dirt road. I'd been hoping for this shot all weekend, but these guys can be elusive when you have a camera, and everywhere when you don't!!
Shot info: Canon 40d, 70-200 2.8, shot at f3.2 1/800 - let me know what you think.

I love the composition.
It seems a little dark to me... maybe it is just my monitor. I'd like to see more detail in the hills. Did you use a polarizer?
Thanks, no polarizer, it was in the bag. It was a very dark, dreary day and then there was one break in the clouds. To be honest, I was in a boat fishing, trying to keep the camera bag dry and hadn't pulled it out at all. It was about 1/2 hr before sunset and we were heading in to camp when this small break appeared, so... one quick shot and this is what I got. I tried to "brighten" a bit, but it seemed best left alone. Thanks again.
Not exactly a raptor or other exotic avian species, but this little guy flew in and posed nicely while I was testing my new 100-400mm.

Nice shot and great colors too.
Just jumping into the frey with a couple of shots from a quick outing to Volo Bog State Natural Area (Illinois) the other day. It was +90 degrees so it was a short trip.

More great shots, Don.
I love the first. It has an hdr look to it. I guess it is rare to see a shot with a perfectly exposed sky *and* ground. Did you use a graduated filter in post processing?
I also love the last one. I've seen (and taken) a lot of dragonfly shots, but I don't think I've seen one from that angle, with the head visible through the wing. Plus I love the contrast between the smooth green background and the texture of the twig (or whatever thing it is perched on).
Thanks Jon. The first one is an HDR. Thank you for your comments on the last one. That angle only appealed to me because I could get the head in focus thru the wing. Your comments make me feel like mission acomplished.
I got this yesterday with my new 60mm. It's not the clearest. I shouldn't have been at 2.8 but I was excited and it was tough catching the bee still. 100% 50D

Simply amazing. Amazing. I think this is my favorite photo that I have seen of yours. And that says a lot because you produce an amazing body of work with all those great bird shots! This one however, is perfect to me.
Beautiful shots as always.
Went on a butterfly count over the weekend, and ended up with more than just butterflies:

Nate,
Another beautiful shot Nate.
I love the pattern the water drops and the reflections make.
Love how the bird has somewhere to go in the frame. Exposure looks great! highlights aren't blown and details in the darks aren't lost
Ahh I just love it! :)

Both shots there are very impressive. The exposure is absolutely perfect and the clarity and sharpness is stunning. Well done.
I feel like I can see a Nate bird shot and just know it's him.
I like the fuzzy moth/butterfly type closeup....
Fuzzy bugs are cool.

Hi Jayson- Nice. The composition is great and the colors are very vivid, but not overdone (IMO, that is... tastes vary).
The 100mm macro is quite a versatile lens... it isn't just for macros.
Brilliant shot. Maybe a bit more saturation, but comp is dead on.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments, it is very encouraging.
Dave, I really like the reaction of the monkey in the last image, one looksso serious, the other looks dissapointed, were you doing something that they didn't approve of ? [:)] j/k! I think you can enhance the image by sharpening it, looks like the softness is due to resizing.
Jayson, that is one nice image, a classic pose and composition of apeacock.
I took a walk at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and found this heron hunting smelts
40D & 400 f/5.6L, f/6.3, 1/3200, ISO 250, -1
This is fullframe. The larger version came straight out of the camera, I onlyresized, sharpened and added a border. For this one, I felt that the bg is too blue so I desaturated the bg. I also blended the black area in the ULC.

Spent yesterday afternoon trying to photograph Little Grebesat a pond in a local park. They are very elusive and seem to dive underwater as soon as you focus on them! They pop up silently somewhere else and are very difficult to spot. These are my best 2 efforts below - critique please. I think the lillies in the foreground ruin shot 2 and I'm not over the moon with the composition of shot 1.I think I'll be back pondside as soon as the rain clears!

Hi Bill, nice shots
I would try to brighten up the butterfly a bit, looks like the camera metered the flower on the right.
Hummer looks good, I like it.
Thanks Nate....glad you enjoyed the HB. We're finally getting some sunshine here and I was able to capture him w/a lower ISO, higher aperture and shutter speed. ISO 320, f/8, and 1/200th.
Got a chuckle w/your comment about the butterfly....I was spot metered on her and thought she was a bit washed out, so I darkened her up a bit in PP.
Regards
Bill
