Wow, I need to check out this thread more often. Great shots in here recently!!!
Thanks Jayson. Here's another one from the next morning. Southern Bolivia is a truly fascinating place. I wish I spent more time there.

I really like this shot from yesterday:

Unfortunately, the white in the chick's face is blown out. I do have several that aren't blown out, but I do like the moment captured here. Thanks for viewing...Brant
Great capture Brant. You can hardly notice the blown white...doesn't detract from the nice family moment.
Here is one from earlier this summer:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1872/...25806b42_c.jpgSalmon Run by Stephen, on Flickr
This is a composite image of salmon jumping up a waterfall (locally called "Big Falls"). Amazing the determination of these fish to make it upstream!
Stephen
That is cool. Nicely done.
Do you know about how big they are?
Thanks Brant.
If I had to guess, most would be around 40-50cm (16"-20"). Local salmon fishing regulations permit keeping fish up to 63cm (25") and anything larger has to be hook and release only. A couple of the larger fish in this shot may have been larger than the 63cm limit.
Stephen
Huh....most fishing regs I know of allow you to keep the larger fish and you have to throw back the little guys. I wonder if they are trying to genetically promote the larger fish, or if they have found the larger fish are more likely to survive the journey/more likely to produce. In lakes and rivers, larger fish tend to be older and they do not want to taking all the younger fish.
Anyway...speaking of fish...Loons do not adhere to size limits...I was actually pretty impressed that the parent loon caught and feed this to the, not so little chick any more, but still a chick:

The most species the largest fish are female
The loons are impressive, nice work. Makes me want to go get the 500 even more, but I have a pretty good idea that there is a little more to just having a great lens.
great loon pix Brant.....Pawtuckaway?

BTW...thanks.
Thanks and nice work yourself. My earlier shot of the loon was Pawtuckaway.

I think that this is currently the one i most like. Quite many years it took to finally catch decent lightning shot.

Nice shot Kari....
The shot is beatiful!
What i would like to see is a bit of improvement for the "alone" around the trees
early color in northeast Massachusetts.

More travels for me --- this time to fantastic Botswana and Zimbabwe. We spent a quick 3 weeks at 4 different safari camps, getting a delightful taste of the scenery, wildlife, and culture. The weather was hot and dry, which makes this a good time of year to go since the animals congregate at the few watering holes. I brought two full-frame bodies, and my 500 f/4, 100-400, 24-70, and 14 mm prime. I used polarizers on both the 500 and 100-400 outside of the golden hours, and they helped a lot. It is definitely a target-rich environment, which meant you could exercise some creativity and get some unique wildlife shots. Here is a sampling... more on my website.

Ridiculously good pictures too ! Thanks for sharing Jonathan.
I didn't travel to a spectacular country but I took a few days off in the Swiss Alps. Only a few miles away from home, yet more than enough to visit some places I didn't know.

Great shots guys.....
Jonathan....those are cool looking dogs....big ears...smallish bodies....wow.....
Pierre...where's the snow!!! Great landscape....
Thanks ! Well, considering there have been at most two rainy days here since I came back from Bolivia in early August, snow was quite difficult to find last week. Yet it came back today in the mountains and should come close to the bottom of the valleys tomorrow. I'm afraid I won't have much time to take pictures this week though.
I went to the US Grand Prix (Formula 1 race) in Austin a few weeks ago. I had never been before, so I didn't really know what to expect from a photography point of view. I have to say... the photo opportunities aren't that great. That being said, I did get some shots I really like:

Just catching up on the forum again after some travel. Photography was not the main thrust of the trip, so I went "light" with gear.
This snap was before the tragic shootings at a US synagogue with the same name as this Budapest memorial to the Holocaust.

Nice shots Carbon! Like the coloring and composition of the first one...and the sparks in the third is pretty cool too.
Like the shot of the "Tree of Life" Danny! My parents were there this past summer, and judging from their snapshots I'm not sure how you managed to get this one without a lot of people in the frame. Well done!
Stephen
Thanks, Stephen.
It was Saturday afternoon, so all of us tourists were outside a fence. Still needed to wait for a tour group to move past. Then there were a few minutes when just my wife and I looking at the memorial. The brief quiet certainly made it more impactful.
I see lots of good work appeared on the forum in the past few weeks!

Hiked into a few waterfalls this weekend in Massachusetts. Of course, my favorite was the easiest hike...…

Here is one from me from this past summer...I'm still quite backlogged with shots from this summer but am slowly working through them. Hopefully I get through them before Christmas family photos start in earnest...

Lovely shots, Pierre. Great reminder that sometime I must see more of the natural beauty of Switzerland, not just a city.
And the bird pix from all of you remain captivating.
( I don't think we will need a new thread for plastic cows on balconies.)

I am slowly editing more shots from our trip last month. This trip was mainly a birthday present for my wife, so I took only the SL2 and did not interrupt sightseeing for photography more than a minute or two at any place.
I plan the best shot of a church or cathedral in each city for the weekly contests. Some other pictures were just fun even if they can't all have a plastic cow.
In Innsbruck we were in luck to see their annual "Innsbruck@night" celebration. There were performers in elaborate costumes and plenty of shoppers enjoying a crisp autumn evening.
