NEW: Self-Portrait (Sean & Amber) using the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5

After being completely disappointed with the autofocus performance (or lack thereof) of the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, I purchased a refurbished Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 to replace it. So far, I'm really enjoying the way the world looks through this lens.


Canon 50D, 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, f/3.5, 10mm, 1/125 sec, ISO 200

Cool Shot. Lens looks sharp wide open. Was that at 10mm?


Did you use any post lens distortion adjustment?

I changed the original post to show it was at 10mm. And oddly enough, this is straight out of camera.

And on a side note, my arms are so long that I rarely find long sleeve shirts that fit me in both the arms and the body. The one I'm wearing in the picture above was custom made (my initials are monogrammed on the left cuff).

That's very impressive. My 17-35 f2.8L on my 5D wouldn't look that rectilinear. I don't think the 16-35 would either.


Your camera must have been perfectly aligned to the horizon. Man the verticals are blowing my mind!!


OK, photozone is showing very well controlled barrel distortion on that lens.

Not a conventional choice to do portraits with wide angle. If you like stuf like that you should have a look at Platon (photographer, uk). He does celebrities with wide angle and really mastered it quite well where the distortion works wonders.

That's a really interesting shot Sean - well done. I'm glad you are asimpressed with the 10-22mm as I am. For a1.6sensorSLR it's the ultimate landscape lens but obviously it works well as a portrait lens. It's definately my favourite little lens at the moment.

I think this lens will be the lens I pull out of my bag when I just want to have fun. Also, when I'm doing senior portraits, I can pull it out and give the customer a [distorted] perspective that they're simply not going to get from a studio. Something fun and different--crucial differentiation in a growing (and sometimes crowded) photography market.

You could give them that "the Dog" look.

Well, the parts of it that you can see in the photo aren't as bad as usual. However, generally speaking, I don't invite people into my apartment because I'm quite embarrassed at how I've let it go (like the fact that I don't have enough room for my clothes in my closet and drawers--so about half my clothes are folded and on top of the couch). I figure I'll get better organized...right before I move out or something. ;-)

Just took a shot of Amber today with the new Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. I absolutely love the distortion you can create with a close subject.

How hard is it to keep your feet out of the pics?

It's not a huge problem unless you're looking straight down (as I was in that shot). I was actually standing on a foldable stool so I could get that angle.

Hmmmm...I never really wanted a ultra-wide butyou're aregetting meinterested.

I never wanted one until quite recently, but it's an absolute blast to use. It's simply the most fun piece of optical equipment in my bag.

...and folks listen to what Sean just said! I love my 10-22. It's not for all occasions, but it's really great fun to use in buildings, tight streets, etc. Mine as currently at the Canon Service Center (it picked up a foreign object under its front element) and I'm getting severe withdrawl symptoms!

I love, LOVE my 16-35 on my FF. I think more people would want ultra-wide if more people tried them.

Still loving the Canon 10-22...used it on a paid maternity shoot this morning (haven't done post on those yet), and used it for a shot of myself and my girlfriend this evening. You see, it's been 3 1/2 years and I had never gotten a good picture of us together. The problem is that it was just too frustrating using the timer and walking over to the camera after ever shutter release. Today, however, I got another Cybersync CST &amp; a motor cord (from flashzebra). With the 2nd CST and motor cord, I can wirelessly trigger the shutter. This made a portrait of me and Amber much, much easier. Oh yes, and I also used my new MaxSaver flexible tripod. I used the flexible tripod to attach a strobe to some limbs behind us to create the "sun."

strobist: 1 Vivitar 285HV, camera left, 1/2 power, shot through a white umbrella. 1 Vivitar 285, full power, right behind subjects, 1/2 CTO gelled, bare and used to simulate the sun coming through the trees. This particular strobe was attached to some tree limbs using my new MaxSaver flexible tripod. Both strobes triggered via Cybersyncs. If I had been thinking clearly, I would have gelled the mainlight too. Sorry, no setup shot.

Funny how much work went in to this when it portrays such a casual relaxing feeling. Sun through trees effect is perfect.

As always, great picture. You really made a good job with the "sun" lol, I actually was sure it's the sun - you got me with this one [:P]

When it came to that shoot, I moved the "sun" around almost half a dozen times before I found the composition I liked the most. The best (easiest) places to hang the flash seemed to be on the left side of the frame, yet there's a building over there and it looked quite silly to have the "sun" in front of the building. The last place I moved the flash to was on the far right hanging on the lamp post. That composition worked really well, but I didn't like any of the pictures as much as this one. I will certainly use this little trick again. ;-)
