Groaning gyros

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"]<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"]Has anyone had an issue with gyros that won&rsquo;t stop?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] I have a 24 &ndash; 105 f/4 L which has been diagnosed with the gyros not stoping and noisy, very noisy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] It doesn&rsquo;t matter if the power is on or off on the body, IS &amp; AF on or off it just keeps making a continual noise, the only way to stop it is to take it off the body.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] (other lens&rsquo;s fine).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] It has always been treated with care and respect, never dropped, it just started.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] To say that I am ticked off is an understatement with a four month old lens, and to make matters worse it will take six weeks at least to repair / replace.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"] Just though Id&rsquo; see if any one else has had this problem. Scott, I have had to send two lenses to Canon, both were back within two weeks---if thats any consolation.

I've never had that problem but anytime I've sent something to Canon for repair it has never taken more than a week and a half from the time I shipped it.

Yeah I think I'm getting screwed over with the time it is going to take. I did forget to mention I'm in Queensland, Australia and it has to go to Melbourne. The joy of living in the lucky country I guess. It just annoys me as it is costing me money and they said the only loan lens they can give me is a nifty fifty, groan, whinge, bugger.

Come on Canon is that all the better you can do? The lens is defective why are you chargingthe customerfor the shipping, it's your fault.[:@]

Hi Scott! Who diagnosed this behavior? Gyros do not make noise, actuators (the motors moving the stabilizer lens or lens group) do. Unfortunately, this does not solve your problem.


The fact that the lens is very noisy comes down in favor of a mechanical problem; on the other hand, the noise stopping only when the lens is off the body would suggest a different cause. Electronics may sometimes "go insane" when exposed to strong electromagnetic fields, excessive heat or other kind of physical stress...


Apart from the abnormal noise, is your 24-105 functioning (AF and IS)? Can you tell if IS is working properly by looking through the viewfinder at 105mm, even if now you can't compare IS off/on?


That's quite an intriguing problem... I couldn't find anything similar googleing the web... Please, let us know how all this will end up. Good luck!

I'm no direct expert, but gyros are a moving part, so they can make noise.

I'm not an expert either, but a properly balanced and functioning gyro wouldn't make a noise that we could hear, but I could see a faulty gyro making noise. The actuators do make a noise that is normal and some (all?) lenses they even make a little clunk.

I'm not a Daniel Browning clone, either[:D]... Nonetheless, to the best of my knowledge, gyros used in Canon image stabilizers are not much different from those present in several other devices including iPhones, Wii controllers and some laptops, just to mention a few of them. Basically, they are microaccelerometers. Canon defines them vibration gyro (angular velocity sensor) and acceleration sensor to indicate, respectively, the gyro implemented in the conventional image stabilizer to compensate for angle camera shake and the one added to the new hybrid IS which compensates for shift camera shake. There are no spinning parts in such gyros, the Canon technology is based on murata-type prismatic beam gyro (have a look here) and therefore, faulty or not, they can never produce even the faintest noise.


@Scott: hope you managed to have your 24-105 fixed the soonest... btw, apart from the impossible-to-switch-off groaning, whatever the cause, does it work despite the noise?

My lens is now in the hands of the experts [:(] When the lens was on the camera and it was making the noise the image through the view finder would jump constantly, a few times every second. Towards the end I kept getting read errors, incompatible lens and stuff, an X would come up then it would freeze.<o:p></o:p>

For what it's worth, I have my camera gear insured through a Valuable Personal Property rider. As a result, I don't insure it during shipping. I figure why double-insure it? The premium is roughly 1.5% (annually) the value of the gear. Assuming US dollars, that lens is about $1200, so insurance would be $18/year. If you paid that much to insure the shipment, you're better off insuring it for the whole year for the same amount of money (if you can get similar coverage).

UPDATE


Just to let you know I have heard from Canon Australia. They are waiting on parts to arrive from Japan, no diagnosis what the problem is as yet,just waiting. A lens that is less then 6 months old you would think they would give me a new one, but no it is going to be fixed. Expected to be back by late January, are the States and other places this bad or is it just Australia. I am just about done with the whole experience. I'm nervous at the thought of buying another L lens.

I'm about to send my 1D3 body back to Canon for its fourth visit, as the 'Error 30' messages are getting too frequent to ignore. It has to wait until my fiance's 40D/grip goes back for a return repair, as the grip is now unusable for shooting.)


Disclaimer out of the way, I suggest each of you read the warranty that came with your equipment. If you do so, you'll most likely find that there's no guarantee of functionality or availability, no promise of repair turnaround, etc. You'd be welcome to give Canon an earful, but there's little that could or would come of it, aside from being labeled internally as a squeaky wheel. It's the reason that I suggest that people keep old gear as spares, etc.

I'm sure you miss your L. I missed my $4500 "professional" camera when it went in for the AF "repair" - that was tough, as the camera didn't focus that well, the "problem" had been identified, but we all had to wait our turn before we could send it in for repair. When we got the call to send it in, nobody knew what would happen if we didn't send it in right away (would we lose our place in line, etc.), and nobody knew how long it would take to repair. I missed it again when I sent it in for "abnormal mirror operation" - random Error 99s that were slowly getting more frequent. Imagine my surprise when it came back and only shot 16 frames before it became useless as a brick - it wouldn't take a single shot, just error out every time. (Here's the kicker: if it goes back for a "return repair", it gets checked by a supervisor before the work is completed, and checked by a supervisor after the work is completed, so it takes longer than a normal repair!) And now it's going back for what I suspect to be a shutter problem.


I know it's a tough situation, but ask yourself this: is it any different than with any other piece of consumer electronics, other than the price tag you paid? The main difference I see is that consumer electronics are often throwaway, whereas the value of the lens makes it a fair candidate for repair. And with that said, would Nikon (or Sony, Olympus, etc.) be any better if/when something breaks? If so, then by all means it's probably time to switch.
