Assignment 2: Person and Machine -- Itheone wins!
We had some fun with the last assignment with Keith B winning with a beach sunset picture. His prize was to choose the next topic. Here is what we are looking for:
A portrait or self-portrait of people working/interacting with
tools/machinery or with cars, motorcycles, bicycles, or what have you. This could also include lawn mowers, wood working power tools, etc. The only requirement is that it be powered, electrically or through a fuel engine.
There are no restrictions on new/old pictures. While I would like you to go out and take something new, if you have an old picture please do not hesitate to submit it. Submissions are open till Sunday December 6, about a week. Keith B and ShutterbugJohan will be narrowing the submissions at the end of the week.
We have the finalists in! Sorry this took so long, that was my fault. Here you go, voting is at the bottom and open till Friday. Remember that the prize for first place is picking the next assignment. (I will probably ask you to judge it as well.) Thanks again to Keith B for this subject.
CONGRATULATIONS Itheone for your win this time around!
Itheone

Alright, I'll kick off. This may not be the technically most perfect shot, but I just love the expressions on these guy's faces. Especially the one pointing his gun right at me.

How on earth did you get on that one? I always got stuck weeding the rose beds at US-20 and Grandview.

Don't think I qualify for this since I'm judging but I wanted to post this.

Re: Assignment 2: Person and Machine
Daniel,
They have a new setup called "Student Ambassadors" and they set it all up. It consists of 6 (I think) students and because they like me (well maybe it was random) I got to do that.
Keith B,
That is an awesome shot! Where was it taken. I would love to shoot from the pits of a Grand Prix some time. My dad was given the opportunity once by a Canon rep that visited the camera shop he worked at in College but graduation or some large event like that was the same weekend so he didn't take it. :(
Deva,
Love the shot of that motor cycle also. I would be just as amused to be given the opportunity to shoot in spot like that (although I would prefer cars :P ).

i think cars are less dynamic than motorcycles. they are always in same position, you can't see the driver most of the time, no risky situation, less interesting to me.
sorry if I'm going offtopic, bet here is a spot you can see bike in the air, how often do you see that on car races? only on World Rally Championship.

Thanks Samuel!
It was taken at Daytona Speedway in October during the Biketoberfest Endurance races. I was doing some work for a biker mag so I had a press pass.

I thought this one might be OK for this category. I took it at a "classics" day at NH Motor Speedway this summer.

Re: Assignment 2: Person and Machine
Here is my entry. This is my first serious self portrait. It was gonna me and either my electric shaver or my car. Tried first with the car and kinda liked it so never got to do the shaver photos. Taken with a G10on Manfrotto 785Bwhich I always carry with me. Sean, if you're reading this post, thisphotograph was inspired by your works.

Witha little gridded light on your face coming from the left side, and I'd say it was just about perfect. ;-)

Thanks! I feel really fortunate. One of those right time right place things that I usually don't get. It was funny, I went to the beach to photograph the sunrise and the clouds ruined it. Heading back over to the main land I hit crazy fog and with the sun rising it was terrible but then I saw the sail boat and had to stop.

I don't usually upload pics but I'm into man vs. machine so here's my contribution:

Re: Assignment 2: Person and Machine
Deva,
Fair enough. I just happen to not care for motorcycles and I love cars. I am a huge fan of the WRC and that "you never know what will happen" situation that presents its self there is thrilling. That would be my venue of choice when it comes to shooting cars.
Keith B,
That shot of the sailboat is ridiculous! Great that you got it though. I love when you just happen be there right at the exact moment and take the shot. Nice job.
