Re: Spring is in the Air!
there's a satisfaction when you shoot these type of images. looks good congrats. I can never track down those birds when they zoom by... like a little UFO, very unpredictable where they are zooming to.
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Utterly beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It's hard to believe the title of your post when all of northern Europe has been blanketed with snow and here in Greece, we're getting our winter rain, but those colours, that bokeh, well, just great. If there's one thing, perhaps the hummer's thorax is just a tad over-exposed, but that may be my monitor.
Thanks again!

Re: Spring is in the Air!
As twistedphrame said on the other post, you take the best bird pictures over here - great job [H]
Re: Spring is in the Air!
I just have a few decent images. I'm sure you guys and others have many great images to share in the near future. [:)]
Ultima, I think the best way to photograph hummers is to know where they feed. It's much easier to shoot them when they're hovering or perching.[:)]
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Wonderful shot! I love the composition of the bird in your picture. I would try shooting hummingbirds, but I can't seem to attract them.[:(]
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Your bokeh is amazing. I love how there is still part of the plant in the background blurred but the rest of the bokeh is blurred past recognition. Amazing!
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Very wonderful and sharp photo! Great colors, contrast, and bokeh.
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Beautiful detail in the feathers and caught the metallic colorvery well. Nicely done! :)
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Beautiful shot and great composition!!
Re: Spring is in the Air!
WOW! Absolutely stunning. ...the colors, the composition, the bokeh, everything!
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Absolutely amazing shot. I love the composition/cropping which is done perfectly, you have tons of talent. Was this shot handheld or on a tripod? Was that taken with the 100-400?
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Hi Fred, Image was photographed with an EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, hand held.
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Heaps of Kudos!
So far, in my limited browsing of threads, I've seen more than just a few good shots :D
Good to be modest thought!
Good inspiration.
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Very Nice. Very inspirational. In your experience what is the closest you can get to the hummers without scaring them off. (I ask because I don't have a 400mm lens :)
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Hi gldi8r,
The minimum focus distant of the 400 f/5.6L is11.5ft (3.5m), so you can't get any closer than that with this lens. I used to shoot with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS and was able to get as close as 5 ft. You can get quite close to Hummingbird, but you have tomove slowlyand not make any sudden movement. The best thing to do is observing where the hummer normally comes to feed and then wait about 6-8 ft away. The bird may fly awayat firstbut if you patiently wait, it'll trust you andcome back. Make sure you don't wear bright color clothing. [:)]
Re: Spring is in the Air!
Fantastic picture, I really like the way you cropped the picture and the subtle motion of the wings!
