Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland -- Congratulations piiooo
Another round of congratulations to Itheone on his win. He asked for the seasonal theme of "winter wonderland." I can't require new pictures on this one as those south of the equator would have gotten them about six months ago. So whether a new picture, or an old one, how do you interpret Winter Wonderland. Itheone and musickna are judging!
I am proud to announce piiooo as the winner. Sorry this took a couple of days, I was travelling for Christmas.

here's mine: (taken from outside my house last week with 17-40l on 50d)
It was cropped a tad (this is about 95% of the image). This IS my official entry!

Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
I'm in Florida too but... I'm not going to give up yet. You have to admit that winter in Florida IS a wonderland. Sun, shorts, beach and boat parades for Christmas full of holiday lights.
Gotta ponder this one.
-
Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
Yeah you're right. I shouldn't give up so easily. It is hard for this northern transplant to think of FL as anything of a wonderland sometimes. Especially a winter one.
-
Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
Come on guys, let's see the winter in Florida, show us those "brutally" sunny December days. I'm personally jealous of anybody in Florida these days when it's 15 degrees here in Chicago.

Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
I like the hopefulness of this one. Taken the day after a ~3" snowfall. What struck me was that here at the beginning of winter, the little bit of ice and snow left on the bare branches after the strong overnight wind looks like the buds of the coming spring. As someone who moved from San Diego to Boston, that's my interpretation of a winter wonderland - hope for the spring to come.

I was shooting some friends kite sailing on a Frozen lake, and this little girl decided to build a snowman. This was a quick shot that ended up being one of my favorites of the day!

And this was the intended subject for the day!

Not much snow here for the really good Winter Wonderland shots, but it's coming. ;-)

Is that the original background? It looks too white, even for snow!

Metering the black dog, That snow will burn out pretty easily.
-
Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
Yup, original background. The dog is much darker than he appears in the picture. In order to get fur details on him the background has to go.
edit: A pic of our other dog shows the "black dog dilemma" pretty well. Brighten the dog, and the snow will be blown. Darken to get snow detail, and the dog will be a detail free blob. I just need to wait for Canon's 48-bit per channel sensor so I can do high-quality HDR tonemapping on a single image... or get brighter dogs :)

This counts as well for my Frous.
He doesn't leave me much winter wonderland in the garden since he tramples and rolls it flat, but watching him having such a fun is always worth it.
Here is my entry.

Re: Assignment 3 -- Winter Wonderland
While we're questioning what the rules are... is it one entry per person, or can we post a few shots?

I think you should be able to post several pictures, but only if you designate one as the actual entry. That seems fair. What do you guys think?

Sounds good to me. I was going to suggest that you could post multiple, but the judges would only enter at most 1 of your pictures into the "finalist" group for the community to judge on. I think Sean's idea is better.

I'm with Sean here - anyone can put up as many as they like (it's nice to see them), but designate only one for the contest.
Getting some fine photos here - keep them coming!

This was taken from a ski lift gondollaat Whistler last year, hence the distortion, I think it makes the photo unique.

Judging by his name, I'd venture a guess he's from Newfoundland, Canada. Awesome shots everyone. Keep 'em coming (you've got a couple hours left!)
