I named my three 2.8 zooms the Neapolitans;70-200ISVanilla, 16-35II Strawberry and the 24-70 Chocolate.
Ye....wait, you mean photography equipment? Then no... ;-)
i call Tammy to my tamron 17 50....
I call my precious to the 24 70L
and bazooka to the 70 200 2,8
but thats it...
i don´t name camera bodies....
My friends were just asking me that yesterday and I told them, "yea that one is fifty, that is one hundred, and that one is three hundred." And they just stared at me. ;P
i know people that call to the 50 1.8 plastic fantastic or nifty fifty

Oh and to answer the question? Why would I name something that already has a name? That would just get confusing. Or creepy. Or both. I mean, I'm not going to stroke my 300/4L IS and whisper to it "my preciousssssss...." That could be highly inappropriate in a public setting.

What-----I thought everyone called thier 100-400 "Muffins"
1Ds MKIII = Super Wide
1D MKII = Super Fast
70-200 - workhorse
300 f4 - BFL
400 2.8 (when renting from cps) the canon or the bazooka
50 1.8 - the quickie
17-40- no name
monopod - stickie/spectator beating stick/lightning rod/ultra-poinkinator 3000
Very interesting thread and I never have thought of naming my gear.. but if I were to interpret the question as labelling my gear.. I still never have thought of doing it.. [:)]

That's what I was thinking, too. The 2.8 is a hoss.
Mine are called:
1. Couldn't afford you in the first place
2. Couldn't really afford you
3. Definately couldn't afford you
4. Could afford you if I didn't have 1,2 and 3 but bought you anyway
5. Wow you broke the bank
My 100-400 is known as the "M5" Even the guys at work that aren't into cameras know it as the M5.
The name comes from a scene in an 80's movie called "The Party Animal". Watch the movie and you'll see why. [:P]

Never even thought about it for camera equipment. Makes sense, ina way. They've definitely got personality. Something to consider, certainly.
I do call out names, sometimes, when I'm trying to take a picture of something that isn't cooperative, but it's not usually directed at the camera :)
sometimes, you really need a nickname for your equipment especially talk to somebody who doesn't know photograph that much. if you tell those people I'm going to use my 300mm 2.8 today, they will ask you where is your " big canon"?, ok never mind, I think "big canon" is the very common nickname for those big white lenses, and once a while, my coworkers like to ask me: how is your "4000 dollar lens"? so that is the another nickname for my 300mm and honestly, I felt good every times they mentioned that even I knew they were just teasing me because they thought I was crazy to spent a lot of money just on a lens!
Do I name my equipment? no. but I do put koala's on them

My shiny new 24-70 2.8 get's called "The Monster" a lot, because that's what it feels like next to the 50 1.8, 18-55 IS, and 85 1.8.
However that's not really a name. Only my computers are named, at least since I switched to Unix-based operating systems that expect some hostname (and neither "localhost" nor "Colin's MacBook" are particularly practical).
Then again, a computer surely qualifies as photography equipment … either via PhotoShop, or via PhotoBooth ;-)
Ciao, Colin

You've inspired me now Colin... I'm gonna drag the old girl out and have a shoot directly!!!

If you're in the Santa Cruz Area, maybe we can collaborate, or at least shoot stuff.
