Assignment 7: Slow it Down -- Congratulations travischance
Welcome to Assignment 7: Slow it Down, courtesy of Matt Sartin. The idea here is exposures of 1 second or longer. The image can be anything as long as your shutter was open for one second. This promises to be a cool thread.
I will leave this open till Friday of next week, so just about two weeks.
I am also cutting the judges to one judge, because I had a hard time finding a second, and didn't want it to be me always judging. So judging also courtesy of mattsartin this time.
We have a finalists list! There are 8 selections this time. As usual voting is at the bottom. Congratulations to the 8, but also to all of the pictures, they were really good.
-----------------------------
CONGRATULATIONS travischance on winning this assignment with a very creative shot. All the pictures were excellent, and you can see the runners-up below the poll!

Re: Assignment 7: Slow it Down
I guess I'll kick this one off for a change! This was at a carnival in my "back yard" the parking lot right behind my apartment. It is one of those centripetal force rides that pin you to the sides as it goes. I used an eye-bolt and 12ft piece of rope tied to it and run under my foot as a makeshift monopod. XTi, 28-105/3.5-4.5 @ 63mm, f/9.0 ISO 100 1sec. (barely qualifies) I was kinda bummed I cut off part of it, but still a neat abstract picture.

I haven't done long exposure photography for about a year now, I haven't got the time anymore and it's a real shame because it's highly enjoyeble to do and the resaults are very rewarding, and I think it's my favorite kind of photography. But anyway! Here is an oldie!
Best contest until now! I look forward to the enteries!
Good luck everyone!

This is my first try on light trails (I'm not sure if this would be similar to shooting fireworks). This was a big truck speeding on the national highway with some cars joining the chase. I got lucky to get the high lights of the truck pass through the lights of the lamp posts.
I'm sure there'll be more great photos on the way. [:)]

Re: Assignment 7: Slow it Down
I don't often shoot at longer exposures...just can't find the time with a 2 1/2 yr old!!! But here is one I took while working late one evening. The cliffs above Seacliff Flats in Aptos, CA....
5D2, Zeiss 21 2.8, f8@30 sec, iso 800....here is a link to a larger one on my website. Ok, linking to bigger picture doesn't work...but copy and paste does. Sorry!

Don't post much but wanted to share this one. It was taken on our first trip to Paris whenI was still shooting with my 20D and before my "L glass" fetish. It's taken from Plaza de Concorde looking back down the Champs Elysses. The Eiffel Tower can be seen in the background.
Thoughts?

Not my best or favorite long exposure shot, but it makes me chuckle the most.
Canon 7D, 17-55 2.8 at 23mm f/4. ISO 200. 8 second exposure. (Although I like to tell people this was shot at 1/1,000,000 of a second)
Shot in the dark, with a flashlight on the "Flash" to catch the motion trail.

Wow great photos everyone!
I took this a few hours ago. Down town Pittsburgh (or dahntahn to the 'burghers' on this site!) in the city council building. My friends in the photo were taking part in a mock trial court session before this photo (explains the snazzy attire).
It's two photos merged in photoshop. Both at the same exposure. Shot in AV. One at 30 seconds and f/32 to achieve the sunburst lighting, and the second at 1/25 to [just barely] freeze the subjects. Not sure if the judges will skip it since there is a shot at 1/25, but I figured I'd give it a go.

Re: Assignment 7: Slow it Down
Whatsreal: almost abstract. I like it. What would happen if you would crop it down? The carroussel reference would be less obvious but the abstract color patterns would still be amazing I think. I am totally digging the colors.

Re: Assignment 7: Slow it Down
Jon,
That is a great shot of the Orion. What is stacking? Are you taking multiple exposures and somehow combining them? Is it like HDR, or something totally different?

Re: Assignment 7: Slow it Down
Gosthex, is this image really a second or longer exposure? Looking at the blurred lights, that ride must have been turning less than once every 30 seconds for it to be a 1 sec exposure. Cool shot though!

Yes, by stacking I mean I just took multiple exposures. Deep Sky Stacker alligned the images (they were very close to start with) and added them up.
This does allow more dynamic range like HDR, but not much (to get detail at the center of the nebula I would have taken a very short exposure, ie the standard HDR technique).
The main reason for multiple exposures is that tracking the stars is not perfect. The Mach 1 mount I was using is very accurate, but tracking accuracy is limited by how well you align the axis of rotation of the mount with the axis of rotation of the sky. It must be done almost perfectly for long exposures. Pointing the mounttowards the north star will give enough accuracy for an exposure of only a few seconds, (the North Star is not exactly North, of course). I used a polar allignment scope (with different markings for the position of Polaris for different years since Polaris moves slowly in the sky), which allowed about 8 minute exposures. The elongated stars at the corner of the frame are due to the optics (I wasn't using a field flattener), not tracking.
I *should* have used an autoguider, which is another small telescope and ccd which detects star movement and actively corrects for errors, thus allowing exposures about as long as you want (I've done single exposures of up to about 45 minutes wile using an autoguider), but I didn't have time to set it up so I just went with the shorter exposures and stacked them.
