5D Mark II white photo problem
I have a 5D Mark II that I've had for about 3 weeks, and this morning my wife was using it and took a photo in Automatic, and the photo came out completely white. Did that a couple times, same thing, turned it off and on, all white, and then tried it again a few minutes later and its taking great pictures again. Any body ever seen this sort of thing before?
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Where were you taking the pictures, outside or inside?
Do you still have the files that are white? If so, please tell us the EXIF data (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) listed in the file.
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
The body probably lost full communication with the lens via a dirty contact. Should it happen again try a little turn of the lens.

I've included the EXIF data, the picture was taken inside without a flash, and from what I can tell, the shutter speed ISO and aperture seem to be reasonable.

Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
The Lens is about 3 months old, and the camera is only a couple weeks old, the contacts seem clean and everything seems nice and tight.
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Hmm....I'm going to have to think on this one. Anyone else have any ideas?

I would update the firmware first, if possible. This could be just a software issue. Good luck.
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Sorry Todd I have no idea either - did a bit of a google search and didn't come up with anybody else with the same issue. Lets hope it's a one off event but if it happens again I'd send it in to Canon for a look.
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
I contacted Canon, and they did the standard reset the camera routine, and if that doesn't handle it send it in for a check. I guess I'll wait until next week's firmware update, and see how it goes, it has worked perfectly since the incident, so I don't want to loose the camera for a week to send it in, but it would be a shame if it happens again while taking a more important photo. Thanks everyone for thinking about it for me.

Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
By the way--you may lose your camera for more than a week. When I sent a lens into Canon's Service Dept, the turn-around time was about a month.
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Well, that certainly sells me on updating the firmware and hope for the best.

Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Saw this in the list of fixes in the firmware update

6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

Did you manually clean the sensor or lock up the mirror recently?
Re: 5D Mark II white photo problem
Other than Live view, no, but it hasn't happened again. Right now I'm putting it into the weird fluke column. I reset the camera per Canon's recommendation, and I was planing on updating the firmware tonight, and hope for the best. I'll let everyone know if it happens again. Thanks again
