Here is a few I shot Sunday. Aerial shots were with 7D and 100-400. Shots on the ground were with 5DmkII and 16-35II.

Very nice. I've been wanting to go to an air show. Where are you at that they have them this early? I dont think there are any in Ohio (that I know of) until summer.

Thanks! I'm Melbourne (central), Florida. This was the Tico Warbird Museum Air Show.

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming Air Show shot for Flaming
Forgot to mention; I shot the 7D in Servo mode with the AF set to Zone and I don't think it missed a shot. It picked up action fast! This was a HUGE improvement over shooting with the 40D. HUGE!

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming Air Show shot for Flaming
Keith....great shots and thanks for the set up info w/the 7D.
Just got my 7D the other day and plan shooting some air shows, later in the summer, w/the 7D, 100-400 and 40D, 17-55 2.8.
Questions for ya; how'd you walk around w/the 2 cameras and did you use any filters?
The AF on the 7D is fantastic...I rented the body a few weeks ago; shooting a U. of New Hampshire hockey game and shooting birds in some very busy (read lots of branches) and the AF was spot on, minimal hunting.
Thanks for any input Keith
Bill

Thanks Bill!
I don't use any filters.
As for walking around with 2 cameras; I have a flimsy Canon backpack that is small and light, just long enough to carry a body with 100-400, some misc gear and my 70-200. I keep one camera in the bag while using the other. The gates usually open a couple hours before the air performances start so I go early shoot everything on display with 5D and wide angle then when the performances start revving up I swap cameras in and out of the back pack.
I definitely refrain from changing lenses. Air shows are usually windy and dusty.

With the 40D I use to have to go through my air show shots and throw out the poorly cropped and the out of focus shots. I don't know if I threw out any OOF shots this time. It was really that good

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming Air Show shot for Flaming
I suppose Zone AF worked well for you and not for me is because of the close proximity of my subject to the background. As there was no background in your situation to confuse the AF, it tracked very well.

Keith, good info to know.
Which zone did you pick for these shots? The center zone?

Makes Sense. Under the C.fn III I have the Continuous AF track priority selected. Have you tried that?

Keith, good info to know.

For the most part it was the center cluster. Occasionally I bump it to the left or right of the center.

Thanks, Keith. That continuous AF tracking info is also good to know!
Did you do any exposure compensation for these shots?
I have to tell you...these are "top gun" images. I love 'em!
-
Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming Air Show shot for Flaming
Thanks Alan!
No exposure comp, I shot everything jpeg and with the cameras default Standard picture style. I added a slight S curve in PS to a few just to bring up the gray planes.

I'm an idiot. Anyone who was taking advise from me on the AF method I was using, I said I was using AF Zone but I was actually using AF point expansion. All other info I spewed was correct though.

Just kidding, of course.

Now you know the real me.[6]
I think they should work pretty similarly, but wanted to get it straight.

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming
Thanks for sharing. I love airplanes and it is so much fun to see action shots of them. My favorite shot is the Warthog and the other one (I can't place what exactly it is, help?). The two planes are fun to see together especially since I love the Warthog. Coolest plane ever. The helicopter shot is also really cool. I love that wide angle effect that you were able to pull from it. Hope you can update this some time with more cool shots. :)
By the way, have you tried using a polerizer ever? I really like them and it seems like some of your shots would have been somewhat better with that filter attached.
Thanks again,
Samuel

I don't have polarizers. I keep meaning to get an 82mm for my 16-35 and a 77mm for my teles, but I always find something else to spend the money on. I was using the Standard picture style that left colors a little flat. Shooting RAW really isn't that feasible at an air show either.

Keith, why not? You've got a 7D. It shoots fast enough to capture these shots.

Well I guess you could, 15 shot burst is probably enough but the real problem is you only get a little over 200 RAWs on an 8 gig card. If you have larger cards or lots of cards you should be okay.

Gotcha....
I've got plenty of 16 Gb cards, plus a Nexto Extreme for just such an occasion. I can hardly wait to go to an airshow.

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming
One other thing to think about is processing all those shots. As always RAW is the way to go if you have the resources and time/desire to process.

Keith,
Great shots. I know you guys are ga-ga over the 7D AF but I was curious about your exif?
What the heck did you set the camera to.
I've got an old 5D and 40D and the last airshow I attended I can't say I threw out much do to miss focus.
Hmmm... just what were the pros using 5-6 yrs ago? LOL

Thanks.
What is the question about the EXIF? Shooting jets I set it to Av. I was shooting with 100-400 so Av would keep me under the DLA of the 7D. I probably could have knock the ISO down to 200.
Prop planes I set to Tv set to 1/250 and ISO down to 100 and deal with diffraction.
I was touting the AF when shooting sports, air shows are pretty simple. I mostly like the 7Ds resolution for air shows. My 40Ds servo did tend to search a bit where the 7D is spot on.

Kieth,
What I meant was listing the camera/lens(at the beginning if you don't want to repeat)/ISO/aperture/shutter/ for each image so readers could see your settings. That will then prompt the DLA question. I guess you had to crank the f-stop to 16 or something when shooting at 1/250th ISO 100. I wouldn't be guessing if that info was with your photos.Of-course, you thought of packing a density filter...? Didn't you?? LOL
And by all means, show us some challenging sports shots.... indoor basketball at f2.8 subject in full gate coming at you. May be a cool series to show off the frame rate and AF tracking. That'd be awesome!!
Good work man..[Y]

Re: Air Show Shots for Flaming
What is the name of the helicopter in the 5th shot? I saw 2 fly over last week down by Yuma AZ.

Oh. The EXIF is still included in the image data. I thought you looked at that and were questioning my rational for what I used.
EXIF for any jets was 400 ISO Av 5.6 and shutters around 1/1250 to 1/4000th. If you need to know all the exacts pull the image and the EXIF is embedded.
Actually, The f-stops for 1/250th were around f/7, 1/320 got apx f/6. I actually don't own a neutral density filter. I haven't needed one in my pursuit of happiness and haven't had an instance where I've needed one (yet). The minute I have a job that I need one for I will certainly buy one. Same with polarizers.
This shot was taken by my son. He actually shot all the props since they were slower moving. I thought I'd let him have some fun.
7D Tv 1/320 ISO100 f/6.625 (no ND necessary), 100-400 @ 400.

I actually have to shoot an indoor Basket Ball game tomorrow so I will post a couple of those for evaluation.
Here is a football shot in day light until then

I don't what the chopper is. I'm actually not the aviation fan, my kid is. I remember him saying that it was same as a character from the Transformer movie if that helps.

Keith, Apparently, I'm online image challenged. Were would I click to expose the image data? If I right click and choose properties I don't see anywhere to obtain said info. If it is necessary to download a copy of the image to obtain that info, then, honestly, I'm just too lazy. I would think most readers would think the same.
Thanks

I'm terribly flawed. Truth is we are just starting to scratch the surface!
