Does anyone have any suggestions for a quality P&S?
It needs to be compact (easily fit in a pocket)
Of course, quality pics are important.
Battery life is a consideration as is quick start up.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Braden

Canon S90
I was always very pleased with the results from my Canon PowerShot SD960 IS.
I just bought my girlfriend the Canon Powershot SX200 IS and it is excellent for a P & S. The S90 also looks like agreatcamera but the extra zoom on the SX200 IS was beneficial for her so we went with that. Excellent for the price.
I have two friends who have the S90, and they are really pleased. I particularly like the ring that can be customised to rapidly adjusting everything from ISO-value to over/under-exposure. The censor is also very good, with little noise at high ISO. My friend took some pictures in the catacombes in Paris, and they were really of high quality. The fact that you can get a under-water case to it just adds up. Highly recommended.
My current P&S is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, which I got after not being happy with the PowerShot G7 (in particular low-light performance; the LX3 has a maximum aperture of f/2.0), and I like(d) it a lot, until I got my first DSLR.
At this time the PowerShot S90 might be a better choice, it's not as old, and seems to be Canon's direct response to the LX3, but I don't know whether it's got features like "auto iso up to xxx"...
Regards, Colin
I second that ~ the LX3 is awesome.
Also look at the TZ and FZ series zooms from Panasonic. The TZ7 especially. It's a compact with 16x zoom, HD video, and a Leica lens with 25-300mm equivalent. From my experience the IQ from these lenses are great.

I got my self the S90, although not the smallest camera out there, IMHO is really a great camera. The one thing about point and shoot that I'm allays concern is taking pictures in low light, and this one's performance is outstanding to me.
Also shoots raw and the function ring that helps a lot on manual modes.
Humbly, I'm a Panasonic TZ series user for life!
Get the LX3 if your are on tight budget. But if you're willing to spend, get the Leica DLux 4 ( re-badged LX3 ). The LX3 & DLux4 looks & performs exactly the same. The only difference is that the Leica's JPEG processing algorithm gives more natural rendition of colors compared to that of the LX3's. And another thing is the bundled software that comes with both of them.....definitely pocket-able too!

Well Braden, it looks like there are a few good suggestions here already and with a lot of different specifications.
I don't have any good advice on these cameras, also since specifications are very varied and depending on personal needs like zoom, lens-apertures and usability, but I can say that dpreview did a few reviews on these cameras. I'm sure the Canon S90 was reviewed, and I'm pretty sure you could find more reviews that might be helpfull to you.
Good luck with finding the right one for you!

I like the Leica M9 paired with a 35 or 50mm lens. Or if you don't want to spend ~15,000 you could get the Canon G11 for around 500
Thanks for all the replies. When I started searching reviews online, every review site had completely different favorites from the other. I will certainly add those listed here to my research list.
If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know.
Thanks
I just ordered an underwater point and shoot, the Sony DSC TX5 (man, the names of these things are like license plates). I usually haul my DLSR and 2-3 lenses, tripod, and all the extras with me on the weekends. I wanted something that could fit into my wallet, take decent HD video (720p is fine for me), be able to take panoramas that does the stitching in camera), can shoot 10 fps, can shoot somewhat decently in low light, can do in camera 2-shot HDR, and what the heck, have the ability to take it in the pool or snorkeling.
Now if this camera I ordered does all of this as many review articles have pointed out, I'll be more than happy.
Canon S90 as well is my suggestion. I have the Fuji f100d (discontinued), have gotten amazing shots out of it and generally have always favoured Fuji P&S cameras. It's successor the F80EXR is a pretty good camera from what I've read and is cheaper than the S90. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...specifications
