Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
These were taken with an XTi
Yesterday was really warm and sunny, so the bees were really active. This was as close as I could get handheld.
f7.1 1/640, ISO 800

This was taken from about 10 feet away.
f4 1/60, ISO 1600, Built-In Flash

These both were adjusted for white balance and sharpness. But the color, contrast, and brightness are straight from the lens.
This was a really good buy!
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
I like the bee shot. I bought this lens back in November just as all the insects disappeared for the winter here in Ireland.I can't wait for the warm weather to come back, the 100mm f2.8 macro opens up a whole new world of photo opportunities.
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
Thanks. Do you focus manually, and use a flash?

Very nice shots. I bought mine last July and I think its my sharpest lens. I have similar bee shots.
The lens will open a new world for you. If you aren't using a flash yet, a nice one with a deflector like to Speedlite 580EX will be useful.
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
For now, I'll have to use my 540ez on Manual witha Lumiquest Softbox. I spent my money on lenses!
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
This makes me want this lens even more now! But I'm real tight on cash at the moment.
By the way, I love the picture of your (probably) cat. the wall and the couch add so much color.

I like the bee photo. I bought that lens this past year, and it is by far my favorite lens. Thanks for sharing the pictures

I rely on AF as much as possible as my eyesight is quite poor. I do have the Canon Anglefinder C to aid MF when my subject allows the time to set up. I try to avoid flash as I prefer natural light, but if I have to I stick my 430EX on an off-shoe cable. I'm still on a learning curve with macro photography but find it an incredibly rewarding area. If I'm stuck at home due to bad weather I can spend hours taking the backs off old watches and photographing their insides!

I agree. Real quality. And doesn't cost a fortune.

Thanks. I got a lttle closer today, but had to use ISO 1600 and larger aperture. But I think the cloudy conditions washed out the color a bit:

Thanks. I could do without the credit card bill though! ;)

When you said 10 feet away, you meant from the cat right? If so, how far were you from the bee on the first picture in this thread?

Probably more than one foot
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
Wow, those are some nice shots of the bee! I really wish I could get my lens focused on one, but considering I'm quite allergic to them. I'm going to have to fit my extension tubes on my 100-400 and see what I can do. Again, great shots!
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
Thanks! Here are some from today. I'm trying to get closer, but the autofocus is reeeeeeal sensitive at 1:1, and these puppies move too fast for manual (for me at this point, anyway):

Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
My favorite is Bee #1. Wish is was there!
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
Love the last bee too! Maybe a little more depth of field would be nice, but it's a great shot. Makes me identify with the insect!
Re: Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro - First Couple of Shots
Thanks Colin. It was a drizzly kind of day today. So the best I could do without a flash was f5.6 1/100-1/500 at ISO 800. I suppose I could have bumped it up to ISO 1600, but didn't think of it!
