Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Hello again!
Thanks to MattG we have a new assignment in the works.
<p class="MsoNormal"]"singing in the rain"
<p class="MsoNormal"]The idea would be capture the emotion you feel from the rain in your particular scene. I can see them ranging from loud and daunting to calm and tranquil.<span>It could be a horrendous downpour or a quite sun shower, just after the rain or even just before.<span>Have fun of course!
So I let this go about 2 weeks longer than I meant to. Sorry guys. The finalists are up now, though the messages between Matt and myself got deleted I had them in my inbox (YAY).

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Do you mean more like portrait shots in the rain, or just photos of rain?

I'd say an open interpretation of the assignment subject is part of the game.
And unfortunately (?) here in Italy we've been having nothing but sunshine for weeks, with no indication of change, so for this round I'll either have to be very creative, or drive real far ;-)
Happy shooting, Colin

I cant really feel bad that you are stuck in Italy but I agree 100% onyour interpretation pointColin! As long as it has something to do with rain your good.
Here is an example.

Just bought my 17-55 from B&Hand it rained the entire weekend in NYC :( The vibe I get from this picture is depressing!! Which is exactly how I felt.
I took this picture form the window of my room at theEmpire Hotel.
Good Luck Everyone!!

Took this picture while visiting Oslo this summer. We had some beautiful weather when we travelled Scandinavia for 2 weeks, but it rained for 24 hours during our visit to Oslo.

Thanks Ben. I've always wanted to take this shot after seeing a shot with a pedestrian on a zebra crossing in Tokyo from high up. Finally saw this happening this summer, ran up some steps and quickly composed. I'm not too happy with the B&W processing, but this is party because of the color of the pavement which was quite dark. I tried to raise the contrast between the woman and pavement (as you can see when you look at the - lack of - detail in her umbrella), but it didn't quite work out.

Thanks very much Matt! [:D]
I forgot to mention that these were taken in my back yard, using my 50D, Sigma 30-1.4 lens, and a 580EXII flash set for high speed sync.

Awesome assignment choice & great photos so far! I'm under a tornado watch right now, in the event it turns into a warning hmmm...do I go to the safest part of the house or go outside and take a photo for the assignment!?

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
...And we're back!
I have voting up in the OP for 4 finalists. We will get another assignment up as soon as we have a winner and a new subject. Thank you all for participating, MattG for setting the topic and picking finalists, and Jan (Sheiky) for reminding me about this.

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
You're welcome. I'm looking forward to a new assignment! I guess this one was a bit underrated due to the holidayseason, but I guess that same holidayseason will bring us a lot of beautiful photos for the next assignment!
Good luck to the chosen ones!

Quite so! I was away for over three weeks of combined business/holiday travel. There was plenty of rain, but I didn't bring a computer... Anyhow, looking now, there are some really nice shots in this round -- and I'm also looking forward to the next one ;-)

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Congratulations,Ragingblues!
Time to start thinking of the next assignment... Hopefully, <span>Whatsreal will contact you about that, but if not, message him!

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Thanks very much! It's an honor to be among such talented people, and be lucky enough to have just taken a photo that seemed to work for this challenge. :)
I was waiting for an official reply to ask what to do next, but I'll message him now. I did look at previous assignments and put some thought into what the next one could be. I'll save it, especially since I need to talk to Whatsreal first anyway.
Thanks again,
Ken

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Congrats to Ken and all of the participants! Nice Job all around!
Although I voted. It seems that we get a small turn out when it comes to voting, so I was wondering if it's possible next time.., for someoneto stickie the thread on top of the forum, and add the word voteto the title. I think a lot of people don't realize that a vote is actually taking place. Just a suggestion.

Honestly, even though I follow the forum, I have never seen a place to cast my vote---What am I missing, where and how do you vote?

Re: Assignment 11: Singing in the Rain
Bob,
After everyone submits their photos, the field is narrowed down to the finalists, then there are a few congratulatory posts, and then the vote takes place back at the top of the Assignment Thread, which is also thefirst post in the thread. I assume this is done, so that there isn't a "voting post'" followed by some congratulatory posts after it, which would then leave the "voting post" in the middle of the thread.
If you check the thread regularly, then it's easy to realize that voting is taking place, but if you miss a few days, then it's quite easy to miss the vote.
Whatsreal, Are you able to:?
1) Stickie the thread at the top of the forum or...,
2) Edit the title of the Thread to indicate that voting is taking place.
Thanks, "Whatsreal" for taking the time to put this whole thing together in the first place.

I don't know if I can make threads "Sticky," I'll ask Bryan if that is a feature of the site that he could turn on for me. One way everyone could help would be to post a comment after they vote, then it will keep getting moved back to the top of the list.
I used to change the title, but lately I have been forgetting. (I'd forget my own head if it wasn't attached to my body, to use an old phrase) I will try to remember that.
Thank you all for the interest and participation.
Dan Fleming (wish I could change my username...didn't read Bryan's post about that before signing up.)
