Canon DSLR cameras of the future.
I'm not sure if this should be under cameras which it is about or open talk.
Just curious what other people think about including video capabilities in the DSLR's of the future? Do people think that all of the future cameras both consumer and professional cameras will include it or will there still be some cameras with out it? It seems to me that the video capabilities would be more of a consumer thing that a professional thing? However I have no idea what the demand is one way or another. Personally I have no interest in video so I really don't want a camera with it, therefor I'm not interested in paying for something I would not use.
If a "professinal " wanted to include video in his/her service wouldn't they be more inclined to purchase a video camera for that? Just curious on my part.
What do you other folks think?

I think that the cost of adding the ability to shoot video to a DSLR is pretty marginal so you'll more than likely see it on most, if not all, cameras in the future. Also, and much more importantly, the cost of adding video to a DSLR is much less than the cost of losing customers who expect that it should be there.

Interesting Wayne, but I truly think video will be adapted in pretty much every new camera. Perhaps a new product out of the Canon 1000D series will go without, but I think most lines will get video. For one, I don't think it's too hard to put on a video-mode (People have done it earlier with software hacks) and therefor it makes sense to make that videofunction available.
I personally have a video-mode on my 5D2, but I have rarely used it. But I'm not annoyed by the fact that I can use it and I perhaps paid a little more for having video-capability. Anyway, try to find a point and shoot camera without video...I think that's also the way it will go with DSLR.
It's the same as live-view also a function that is hardly understood by die-hard photographers with a film-background. I don't really need it and could live without it, but there are times when it's pretty nice to have [;)] It's just there and perhaps if you just give it a chance it might give you even more fun... [A]
Also the DOF effect in video that a DSLR achieves with it's lenses and the wide variety of lenses you can use is a major PLUS for the new-age videographers. If it will develop just a little more, the normal digital videocamera's have a hard time competing the DSLR video-modes.
The only thing the DSLR video-mode really lacks is the constant AF.

Actually, if they removed video, everyone would have to pay morefor the camera, because price is inexorably linked with sales volume. The same thing happened when they came out with autofocus. A lot of photographers said they have no use for autofocus and did not want to pay extra for a camera with that consumer feature. But the feature massively boosted sales volume, so prices on autofocus cameras dropped like a rock, and the sales of non-AF cameras got much worse, so they actually cost a lot more. Think of it this way: how many other features are on the camera that you don't use? Interchangable focus screens? DOF preview? Battery grip? USB? Hot shoe? Flash terminal? Greenbox mode? Spotlight mode, etc? Sensor witness mark? Diopter adjustment? Picture Styles? Direct print? Slideshow? Camera user settings? External speedlight control? 1/2 stop exposure increments? Safety shift? Each of those are features that Canon had to develop, and nobody needs to use every single last feature. But still the features are included because they increase sales enough to offset the cost of adding the feature. So it is with video. But unlike interchangable focus screens, which very few users even know exists (let alone use it), video is a massively popular feature that millions of users consider important in buying a DSLR. And it's not very expensive to add, because all the effort is already being expended on still photography features like live view and DIGIC.
So if we want lower prices, we should be encouraging Canon to add as many dumb consumer-oriented features as they can, even lame stuff like the direct print button and face-detect autofocus. I will never use those types of features, but I appreciate the lower price that they bring with them.

As a semi-professional myself who does include video in my service, I can answer that question. I used to bring a 5D classic and a $4,000 video camera (XH-A1) as a part of my services. But there were several problems with that:
- Extra weight to carry
- Extra room in the bag
- Extra $4,000 cost from my wallet
- Extra lens (or lenses) just for the video camera
- Very poor control over depth of field
- Poor low light capability.
- Poor color accuracy (due to 3-chip vs bayer)
There is only one video camera capable of the same depth of field as the 5D2, the Phantom, and it costs several hundred thousand dollars. Video cameras with the same low light capability are in the $25,000+ range.
Now that I upgraded from the 5D to the 5D2, my video camera has the following features
- Weighs 0.00 pounds (0.00 kilograms for you metric folks [;)]
- Takes up 0 extra volume in my camera bag
- Costs $0.00 (I sold the $4,000 video camera)
- Uses all the same lenses as my still camera.
- More control over DOF than many $100,000 video cameras.
- Better low light capability than many $25,000 video cameras.
- Better color accuracy than many $25,000 video cameras.
I had a funny experience about a year ago. I had a gig shooting video (no stills) for a wedding. The other operator and I were both using 5D2 for the whole thing (we brought two XH-A1 cameras as backups, but we never needed them). When the two still photographers showed up, guess which cameras they were using? 5D2! Four different 5D2 cameras did the wedding. It was great.

Hmmm. At my wedding there was a roliflex which no one but me knew how to use and a disposable film camera. Where were the 5D2's then?

Boy when I read this I was salivating to beat the band. I thought could counter with the reasons a professional would want two cameras a DSLR & Video . I figured that I/we could get a pretty good discussion going on the subject,,, and then,,,,,,, and then,,,,,,,, and then I scrolled down and read Jan's comments & I felt that perhaps the discussion could go a fair bit further,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and then,,,, I read Danial's contribution and at least at this time I don't really have a response. His points of view were/are {to me anyway} so complete I stand completely defrocked if you will. I have no counter point. I would still like to hear from others on the subject if you are inclined to put in you $.02, & if I come up with something earth shatteringly relevant I will ad it.
Once again I think I come up with what I believe is a tantalizing point of view on a subject and then after the community replies I am left feeling "Old and In the Way"[:$] (an old Jerry Garcia band from the 70s). If it sells cameras, they will have it. Canon added this to the 5d MK II as a sales gimmic, it didn't cost much to add. They were greatly rewarded with more sales than they ever dreamed of getting, they were caught totally by suprise at the popularity of the feature.
That is why all manufacturers are scrambling to add Video. They are afraid of losing sales to cameras with video, even though the average photographer probably will not use it, it helps sales.
We'll also start seeing better video features, for the same reason, buyers want the newest and best features.

I would say GPS would be the next for Geo - Tracking, but that's probably because of my occupation. I would suspect many of the younger folks would choose the Blue Tooth/Wi-Fi as the most useful. But I don't even own a cell phone whereas most of the younger folks I know do. Yes it it is really obvious that I'm into the technology boom. NOT.

I don't see GPS coming to a camera near you - it's too power-hungry, and it'd need good integration so you'd know if the GPS had a good signal <now> for the picture you're taking <now>.
I don't think Bluetooth has enough bandwidth for our imagery needs. I'm hesitant to think that WiFi would come to the camera natively, partially due to RF licensing and partially because they haven't made the WiFi units "easy" yet, so it'd be risky to put it in a mass-market product where the support nightmares would explode.

I believe normally they would make 2 images with just a slight different angle of view, just like your eyes and put them as layers on top of each other. With some sort of polarizing you could look trough both layers...something like that [;)] Anyway the 3D filming is done by just a simple idea of 2 lenses or double camera's. Very easy.

I get your point, but there are already compact camera's with build-in GPS. How well they work...I don't know.
I bet they work good for travelers etc, but I'm not sure how they will be implied by professionals who often know very good where they are and most of don't travel long distances with all our equipment. Anyway I'm not seeing a true benefit of having GPS on my DSLR.
By the way, only GPS tracking doesn't use batteries as much as you would think. As long as it only receives and uses coordinates it should be ok for your batteries. Once you also want it to show your location on a map...it will literally eat your batteries alive [;)]

Anyway I think adjustable screens will be interpreted more in DSLR's in the future. Especially in the consumer range.
Also 1 very important thing that is going to be big: the new age of micro four thirds camera´s! Same idea as a DSLR with interchangeable lenses, only a lot smaller.

Certainly GPS and wireless will be added, and will have many users as well as detractors.
Personally, I'd like to have wireless control of my camera rather than the 6 ft usb tether (yes, I have a long usb to networkcablethat only works at 10mb/sec). I use my camera in a studio tethered to a pc for precise manual control of focus, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, etc to get just the image I want the first time. I haven't bought one of the $800 wireless grips, they would not pay for themselves in my case.
I could certainly imagine bird and wildlife photographers wanting wireless control of their camera from a laptop far enough away so they are not in danger, or so that they do not disturb the subject.
I'd use gps as well, it sounds like a good way to help organize images by location wather than typinng it into the metadata on import.
