*** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
In attempt to eliminate the Server 503 errors that have been plaguing the site, I am moving forward with an upgrade to the forum software.
The new software is different - it will take some time to get used to. I am assured that the "different" is good - so I request your patience in learning the new way it works. I'm in this with you in this regard.
It will take me some time to configure the new software - so you will see some changes being made from time to time - especially initially.

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
We'll see, thanks for the hard work[Y]

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
Yikes - that's a different look! Not bad, but it will take some getting used to!
I've had to re-login about 10 times already.Bryan, thanks again for all your hard work maintaining the site! We'll get used to the new look...

Ps. when editing a previous post, the text doesn't wrap - might make for some long-distance horizontal scrolling...

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
OK - The home page is now configured to show recent forum posts - probably the most-used page on the old version.
Because all of the stickies on the site roll up into this page, I

Seems like the issue is with the Tags area, below the text entry field. When I clicked the edit button in my post in the Photokina thread, the active frame is on the order of 8000 pixels wide, and the text between the tag entry field and the checkbox for emailing replies contains some bad html (pasted below).

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
Also, my screenshot was downsized from it's original ~700 pixels wide to somewhere a little under 600 pixels wide, and I noticed that the default value in the max width field of the Insert Image dialog is 550 pixels. Does this mean the previous 800 pixel 'limit' is now smaller?
Have fun with the 60D, by the way...looking forward to the review!
Thanks again!

One more suggestion, Bryan - what would you think about having the site logo at the top link to the main TDP home page, instead of the forum home page? I like having a quick way to access the reviews...

Ok, a full test with an externally-hosted image. 4 sizes posted:
- 500 pixels wide (Insert Imagewidth field blank)
- 1024 pixel image downsized to 800 pixels using the Insert Image dialog
- 1024 pixel image(Insert Image widthfield blank)
- 1600 pixel image(Insert Imagewidth field blank)
When I look at the as I compose the post, they all show up at the correct width, and I have a horizontal scroll bar to cover width of the 1600 pixel image. We'll see how it turns out when this posts...
RESULT: looks like the max width is a little bit more than 800 pixels. More importantly, images that are larger than that are automatically downsized to the max width, instead of being cropped. As I'm editing this post, I can still see the full 1600 pixels of the biggest image.

That would be nice--But no big deal, I still have the main site on my link bar. Also, I really like the new layout of the forums and the storage limits are great too. RSS feeds for individual forums are also very handy and seem to be well tolerated by IGOOGLE---.
Very Nice Work Bryan.

Not sure if the remaining changes have been made yet, but I've had to re-enter my login credentials about 12 times in the last 5 minutes, including four times to post this reply. For now, I guess I treat this like Webmail - type the reply, then copy it to the clipboard before trying to post it, lest I was logged out in the meantime. [8o|]Maybe I'll try Firefox.
Other than that annoyance, I like the new design!

Neuro - That sounds like a problem - please let me know how Firefox performs for you.
I customized the sofftware to add a header to the site - Let me know if you have any problems with this.

Bryan,
I'm having difficulty logging in and posting too, and I'm using Safari, so I doubt it's the browser. It's going to take a few days to work the kinks out.

Actually, that seems to make it more likely that the browser is the culprit - I was using Safari as well. I'm trying Firefox now, to see if that works properly. I'll give it a few posts, just to make sure...

EDIT: FWIW, this one went up without a problem...

Still posting from Safari...so, I'm not sure what the issue is, but I'll keep an eye on it and post back if it recurs, or occurs in Firefox.

I'm sure I'm just completely missing the obvious, but where are My Files? It used to be possible to see a user's uploaded images from their profile page, and to upload/delete your own images - I can't seem to find that capability.

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
Bryan,
Scroll-space on any screen is a premium.
I think there is way too much wasted space between posts. I will think of each segment of each post as the "blueback posted by", the "white post body", and the " grey post/cancel" area, and then there is the last item. the "inbetween post" area. The four are very separate in spacing. I have four recommendations.
1st. Decrease the "blueback posted by" section height by 4-6 pixels and increase the font by 1-2 points, or make it bold.
2nd. Decrease the"white post body" section of the first and last carriage returns in the post body. It does not require 2 lines of white space at the top and bottom of each body post.
3rd. Decrease the"grey post/cancel" section height by 4-6 pixels.
4th. Decrease the "inbetween post" sectionheightby 4-6 pixels.
This would yield a much leaner and meaner scrollable site, and much easier to read.
2 pennies

For what it's worth. I'm using IE now, since I absolutely cannot post in Safari. Evertime I write a reply and try to post it I get an error. This one to be exact.I also get signed out immediately at that point.
I found out that it only happens when I try to use the rich formatting reply. In the fast reply everythings works like it should in safari.
In IE I have no trouble at all onto this point.

Re: *** Forum Software Upgrade in Progress ***
That's what I was getting, Jan, and after that I needed to sign in to the site again to retry. But it's all better now for me, although I didn't do anything different that I know of...
I do still have the issue with the weird html code in the Tags area below (in the rich formatting editor) resulting in an extremely wide frame, but I can live with it.

Well, I use IE now, because it really annoyed me. But I'm hoping Safari will work better soon.

I don't see them. Not in Safari or IE.
By the way. What's the max image width now? It re-sizes automatically no matter what size of picture you use?
And you said you got a horizontal scrollbar? Haven't seen that one with your test-images. I have a 24" screen (using 1900*1200p)if that might be of influence.

Max width is just a few pixels over 800, and yes the forum now automatically resizes larger images instead of cropping.

It's not on the images that show up in a post, because those get resized. But if you insert a large image when you are composing a post, it shows up at full size - so if you insert an image that's wider than the frame width (which seems to be 1150 pixels wide), you'll get the horizontal scroll bar in the frame. Your wider monitor shouldn't make a difference - at least for me, when I make this window wider all that happens is the gray areas on the sides of this frame I'm typing in get wider, but the frame stays at 1150 pixels, even if I stretch the window across the full 3600 pixels of my dual monitor setup.
