Old Assignment 14 - Be creative with Depth Of Field
<span style="font-size: xx-large;"]MOD EDIT :
<span style="font-size: xx-large;"]Please visit the new thread *HERE*.
---
It's time to open up those aperatures and let the image break free! Let's see that bokeh - mmmm good! What can I say I'm hooked.
Edited :
Rules:
1. Submissions: November 7th to the 14th
2. EXIF data should be intact. It helps if you can include the main points (including camera, lens, date taken, ISO, shutter speed and aperture) in the text of your message.
3. Only one entry per member.
4. The images posted are "judged" ideally on technical aspects, reflection of the assignment, and the judge's personal preference.
5. The judges are always the person who gave the idea and one other volunteer.
6. Judges narrow the list to 1/3 of the total submissions.
7. The "finalists" selected by the judges are voted on in a poll put into the original post of the thread.
10. The winner chooses the next assignment
(Some assistance provided by Dan Fleming)
I'll start off...looking forward to those submissions
Canon XSi, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS USM MII, ISO 100, f/2.8, 200mm, 1/4000s, October 14, 2010.

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better!
Great assignment! Any special rules? Last round there were questions on how many people could post and how many by that persons would be judged. I think they came up with each winner deciding on the next assignment what the rules were but I

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better!
Also, you probably want to put a deadline on submissions.
This one is going to take some thought. What looks really great with a very narrow DoF? hmm...

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
I absolutely do not mean to be a pain in the butt, but I find the title a tittle of the thread a little confusing.
When I first read"Depth Of Field - the wider the better" I startedsearchingthe My Picture folderfor possible submissions which in my mindwere photographs with a wide depth of field, forexample landscapes with everything from foreground tobackground in focus. I found a few potential candidates and opened the assignment thread only to find that "the wider the better" part relates to the aperture!
As far as theactual topic, I think it is a great one and I am hopefully going to take a fresh photo, just for the assignment!

That's true. By his following description, I would think "The shallower, the better" would be a more accurate (or less confusing) title. :-)

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
Great picture Bob, but the aperture is f/11.
He said he wants a wide aperture, "open up those apertures"
Elmo, what do you mean by wide DOF?
I'm confused too!

Rich, Thanks. I read all of that as well, But Elmo ended his assignment with " Let's see that bokeh", So...... there is more than one way to achieve bokeh, even at F11. Hopefully I understood his assignment correctly.--If not, I am sure he will clarify [:)]

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
I'm SOOOO confused! [:S]
I was looking thru my photos and I have some with great bokeh with my macro at f/8 and f/11 but figured it didn't qualify. I think I'll break out the 35mm this weekend!
-
Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
Hmm, it seems the "circle of confusion" is growing. [:P]
But I'm going to assume (based upon Elmo's pic example) the contest is about a thin DOF.
Bob....great HB capture....I was going to enter one of my thin DOF HB pix, but now I'm reconsidering.
Elmo....the masses need some clarification; do you mean thin or forever DOF?
Good luck everybody

So do I have to wait until tomorrow, 11/7 to submit an image for it to count or can I post it today, 11/6?

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
Apologies forthcoming...
It seems like I may have used the incorrect term. At a basic level, your widest aperature that your lens can handle i.e 1.2, 2.0, 2.8. 3.2, 4.0 etc.
thin DOF would be preffered.
I wanted something different than the typical pet or tree or portrait shot. I also provided a start date of November 7th to give everyone some time, but if you all wish submit till your hearts content.
Hope this helps

Absolutely agree Bob!
You see Bob.., I wanted this clarified, because I don't have anything that good! [:P]

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
I'll jump in: Since we can only submit once I hate being first but here goes: If I understand the assignment: Thin DoF, wide open aperture, not a typical pet, tree, or portrait:

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
ARRGGHHHHH....
Maybe I should just give up and go bury my head in the sand and call it a day.
Please submit photos with a thin depth of field, for those that have submitted, please feel free to resubmit. Anything goes as long as it

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
Since I use my camera for work I get a little burnt out so I don't pick it up as much as I used to when I'm home. I posted this shot awhile back for people to see but it has a thin DOF and its of an interesting and colorful little subject.
TV 1/15, Av 11, Lens 100 IS macro, Iso 1600, hand held shot

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
NOTE: I have talked to Emilio (Elmo 2006) and unfortunately this assignment had a bad start.
<span style="font-size: small;"]Since there was some miscommunication due to choice of words, we decided to make a new thread for the assignment.
Mostly because the idea of the assignment isn't very clear now and the thread has been "poluted" with off-assignment talk [:P]
I think the new thread will be aired sometime in the next 12 hours, so please be patient.
What this means is that this thread can be ignored as the official thread to post your photos for the assignment.
This thread can be used to debate the assignment in general.
People who already have posted a photo will be asked to post again in the coming new thread. If we/I notice that a particular person didn't get this memo, we or I will personally take contact with the concerning person(s).
So please wait for the new thread to start. In the meantime, every question, critique or idea about the assignment or the assignments in general can be posted in this thread.
If something isn't clear, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Jan
Edit: obviously I missed the Assignment 14 - DOF discussion thread... if you want you could also use that thread to debate [;)]

Re: Assignment 14 - Depth Of Field - the wider the better - 7 days!
The thread for the re-started assignment is online now! Click here to go there.
For the people who had already posted a photo. Please do again on the new thread. Thanks!
If there's a moderator around who could change the "sticky" status of this thread and the new one...that we be great! [A]
