usa rebates?

so...supposedly a rebate program was going to start today in the usa. i am going to sell and upgrade from my XSi to a 60D as soon as i get my tax rebate cheque in (hopefully this week) and have been been researching the best prices using photoprice.ca. well, i was planning on ordering from B&H, because they calculate the Canadian GST for you, and yesterday i checked and they were selling the 60D for $888, and today its $999 minus the $100 rebate equals $899..........so, it actualy went up in price. this is the first time i paid attention to rebates and looked before and after...........is this common practice to raise the price by more than the rebate, then put the rebate in place, so it is still selling for more???????????

think ill take a drive to vistek in mississauga and buy it here instead for $999 canadian and i wont have to wait for the camea to be shipped. i wont support stores that play tricks like this with rebate programs......and its probably best that i support my local economy anyway

sold my 40d a few weeks back and held off on getting the 7d because i saw on canonrumors that there would be rebates going on feb 20.. i

gee......go figure......now adorama has increased the price on the 60D to 999 from 888 on saturday, minus the 100 rebate, making the final price 899. so, my conclusion is.........its not a rebate offered, but a 10 dollar price increase.

I have noticed it before, many times before the rebate they are actually cheaper.

Abe's of Maine have the 60D for $850 with free5 to 6 day shipping, not a huge discount but better than paying more at B&H. They have 5200 reviews and 99%, about the same as Amazon so it's a safe bet they are legit. But I haven't bought from them before.

Exactly,...I noticed this too. If I remember correctly the price before the rebate program started was $1479.00 for the body.

Now after the rebate is applied, $1499.00. Hmmmm...

Any BH Photo/Video representatives want to "chime" in?

don't be scared guys, there are some other good stores like Abe's and buydig.com with lower price.

but if you still want to order from those reputable stores, Adorama should match the lowest price, just ask!

seriously, rebates should go to the consumer not the stores, why should we recommend a store who always wants to "steel" peoples money?!

I have noticed in the past that the Canon rebates are usually closely followed by a Canon price increase. However, you used to have a week to pull the trigger between the rebate announcement and the price increase. Looks like this time they went hand-in-hand.Perhaps this is in addition to the February glass increase.

The only thing is that to get it shipped quicker you need to either order by phone or call after you place the order online as they will call before they fill the order to try to add a cheep filter or Mack warranty. On canonpricewatch.com, they have a note about how dealers must have the prices shown on the flyer. I guess it's one of those fair-trade sort of things where the manufacturer sets the price so the distributers don't get into a price war. IMO, this is a common practice, but looks like price gouging since dealers where already giving us a very good price. Stinks for us since everything now is the same price or even more than before the rebate. Looks like the only item that actually significantly went down in price is the 70-300mm f//4-5.6L.

I felt like I was spending a lot on lenses at the end of last year when the holiday rebates were active, buying way more than what I really needed at the time. Now I'm glad I did since they all went up in price significantly.

When Canon raises the prices to retailers, rebates are generally offered for the first few months to delay the price-change for customers. We don

I would believe you if you will sell the 7D for $1699 after the rebate ends[:D]

raising the price on one hand while offering rebates on the other hand just looks too ugly no matter what, and I want to say it again, rebates should go to customer not the store.

PS. one more thing Helen, maybe you want to talk about the price matching policy again since we have some new members they don't know about it.

The rebates DO go to the customer. The problem is that we have to raise our prices to the MSRP. Then our customers get the relevant rebate off that price.

It boils down to this--Canon has risen the MSRP (with a corresponding raise in cost to retailers) on many products. In order to smooth the transition to customers, it has offered rebates that basically bring prices in line with the previous pricing for a short amount of time. After that, I believe you will see prices remain at the raised MSRP levels once the rebates are finished.

True we get the rebate off the raised price. But this is not a one time occurance nor the first time I have seen it happen.

I have been watching the price of the 500mm F4L for a long time, both before and after I bought one.

When a rebate some time back (I believe last summer) was offered on it, the price was raised by the online stores, and the cost savings was very little. Once the rebate ended the price of the lens once again returned to what it was before the rebate.

That instance was not during a price increase.

I have seen this same seanrio play with other lenses. The only thing that seems to happen is that the mom and pop stores for a short time end up being on the same footing with the discount houses for a time.

I would doubt that it is some type of conspiracy amoung the discounters to try and take advantage of a rebate. To the contrary the discount stores are somewhat cut throat and would take every advantage they could. But it is disapointing to those on a tight budget saving and waiting to buy one of canon

Helen's explanation is on-the-money (no pun intended). Unfortunately Canon USA has established a pattern of linking price increases to retailers to their rebate programs. They also do not offer retailers price protection so retailers have very few options. If you look at www.canonpricewatch.com/price-increases-february-2011 you can see their info from January about Canon USA price changes. In http://bit.ly/aTt71O, Rob Galbraith similarly confirms Canon USA did the same thing in 2008, also immediately pre-rebate.

At the first of Feb Canon raised their prices for the most part across the board. Ahead of that move both B&H and Adorama began moving up their prices. I had just bought my 1D Mark IV from B&H and had been thinking about going ahead and buying the 70-200mm F2.8L II when this was anounced. This was in Jan and the prices jumped immediatly off that news. The local mom and pop store were willing to sell at the old prices because they didn't move on the anouncment. I bought the 70-200mm from them actualy cheaper, which is very rare.

Now I am not faulting B&H or Adorama for any of these actions. Their in the buisness of making a profit, just like the buisness I am in. I am sure their are reasons for the price moves.

However, this reason doesn't make sense to blame the rebate price moves on it. What you are saying with this is that there is yet another price increase after the one at the first of February?

Prices already went up before this rebate came out. Are the MSRPprices even going higher after the rebates end

thank you Helen, for your explanation of why this has happened, but, for those of us that were looking to purchase during this rebate program it is still quite a shock to see prices increse then the rebate applied. the only silver lining i can see is that up here in canada, there is no rebate offered and prices seem to have satyed where they were last week, except the fact that things are always more expensive up here to begin with, even with our dollar currently worth more than the greenback. i am still planning on buying myself a 60D, but i am doing it locally now, even though it is $50 more than buying at adorama.

They always make me feel like they have someone more important to deal with than me. And I have called several times and talked to different sales people. They have all treated me the same.

Ditto! Just for kicks, I placed the exact same items in a B&H cart last night and the difference in price from November almost covered my 16-35 f/2.8 II <span style="color: #ff0000;"]L. It certainly looks llike a good investment today. [:D]

Prices are going up, get used to it.

Unless you have your head in the sand, all commodity prices are going up, and this will mean all Canon lenses will also go up. The entire world economy is in a world of hurt. In very short order, all Canon L glass will be more than what you pay today. Not a bad time to invest in yourself.

Sorry to say, but it is what it is. I have called in orders several times and it was always the same. The sales staff does not like questions, and with the cost of some of the items I purchase, sometimes I want a little additional information. (Once you get above a 7D or kit lenses, no one locally stocks anything. The first time I touched a 5D II, 1D IV or any L glass was when I opened the package they were shipped in.) Your sales representatives are always in a hurry to run the sale through and have me gone. Last year when I purchased my new tripod kit, it was botched so bad my credit card company flagged it for fraud. That really caused me a lot of extra aggravation calling back and forth to get it corrected. I know it cost Adorama a 5D Mark II sale, and I told them so, but they seemed unfazed. I think he thought I was talking through my hat. I ordered it from PCNation the next day. I had it two days later. I shot my daughter's dance recital the following week.

Do not misunderstand; if Bryan has a link that I can click through and buy online, I still do that. I just will not order anything that requires a call to the storefront. It is probably best for both of us that way. I know it is much better for my blood pressure.

In fairness when I do not have to deal with the sales department, transactions are very smooth. Your graciously helped me recently with an issue regarding a $20 product. In addition, I have purchased Canon Refurbished and I have been generally pleased. I had one problem with a refurbished item in month eleven of ownership. The Adorama RMA process was very smooth and you stood behind it 100%. I have made mention of those good customer service examples in previous threads. I think that maybe your customer service department (they are good) should do a training seminar for the sales department. I am currently looking at refurbished lenses, and I will have no hesitation buying one from Adorama.

Consider my entry as a rant.

Looking at canonpricewatch, i.e.the 7D prior to the rebates could be had for 1479.99 so in essence with the rebate (200)1279.99. With the price increase with the rebates, this new pricing scheme is only a savings of roughly 75 to 80 bucks.

Someone somewhere pushed out these rebates and then realized that top tier products can be had for the same price of the lower tier products and possibly that Canon realized that the prices after the rebates would be too low.

i.e. the 60D and T3I were priced as follows prior to the rebates:

60D - 899.99

T3i - 799.99

Introduction of the rebate (100), the 60D went up to 999.99 - in essence an error was made as the price of the 60D would have dropped to the same level of the T3i sothe prices went topre-rebate (would 100 difference in price really break the bank?).

...must put head back into sand...but...first...must submit those photos of UFO sightings to TMZ.com
