Assignment 19: Shadow Photography -- Congratulations Ade
Hi All! Denise was the winner of our last assignment with her awesome photo of a flash grid. (Should I admit that at first glance I thought it was mini-pumpkin pies or custards or something?) For this next assignment she has as selected Shadows to be our subject. She says, "I spend a great deal of time generallytrying to eliminateit from my
shots but I'm learningshadow can alsoadd a great deal to a photo! So,
for this assignment shadow can either be the main subject or it can be
used to add additonal interest and creativity tothe photo."
Congratulations to Ade (second picture below)! We'll have a new assignment up soon.

Great shot there Tim! I'm not sure I've ever seen a butterfly in flight quite like that.
Mine is 1/1250, f3.5, 400 ISO, and 18mm with the kit lens on an XSi.

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
This is a totally cool topic and i gotta say, there have been some really killer diller shots so far!
My entry is from Yosemite National Park:There aresubtle shadows where the snow meets the water to define the little snow banks. Canon 7D with a 24-70 at 66mm, ISO 160, f/11for 1/50 sec, EV +2/3

my "fun" shot was taken with a Sony (gasp!) DSC-TX5, handheld and nearly dropped (which explains the motion blur) while riding a bike over a bumpy wooden bridge. Anyway, here is some goofy looking exif data: f/ 3.5 for 1/30 sec, built in lens of course at 4.4 mm, ISO 125

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
Congratulations on the win, Denise.
I don't have many pictures that suit this assignment, but why not have a go anyway? The first is my entry [edited in response to feedback below]. It has been at least a month since I posted some pictures from my Antarctic expedition, so here's a reminder of how cute the baby penguins are.

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
The penguin shadows will win it all hands down. Awesome shots from way way south of the border!

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
So far that Penguin shot has got to be a winner. Great shot!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I couldn't ignore your advice so I've changed my entry.

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
Here's my first assignment entry, just for the record, i think these assignments are great, really got me thinking, I'm usually a bit of an opportunist photographer, but this time i found myself looking at shadows everywhere, great inspiration.
This pic is of a glass pendant light we have, it has a nice glow but not well defined shadows, so I got one of my high powered bike lights and shone it under the light, a few pics with the (pendant) light off and on, but off gave the best results where shadows were concerned. I like the fact that in parts of the image its hard to tell what is real and what is shadow. I also like how the shadows show the shape of the pendants, but the actual pendant itself doesn't. (am I allowed to big up my own pic? hope that's not against the rules).

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
Ok y'all, I just want to reiterate how ballsy everyone must be to try to followup the cute penguins. So I went the other-way and tried to make something "scary"
Enjoy, or be afraid.... of THE SHADOW MAN!!! [8o|]
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5300/...995b1a49_b.jpg:
This one was fun to make. First off it was shot using Canon 50D + Tokina 12-24 f4 @ 24mm 1/200" f8 ISO-400. Strobed using 1 430ex 1/32 power bare gelled with CalColor 90 Green camera right and the shadow was yours truly using one 580exII 1/8 power bare gelled with Storaro Red behind camera left all triggered with CTR-301p's. It took a few shots to get the shadow in the right place, but it ended up being a fun shot, and luckily my wife was a good sport. In post I added some noise and a darkness gradient to get the tone I wanted in the bottom of the shadow.
Cheers,
Dave.

You know, I'm really not sure those penguins are cute enough to compete with your collective imaginations. Well done everyone, some very creative stuff this month.

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
I love this assignment because it is something that I have been doing for years.
Shadow puppets. I love doing them and people love looking at them. Down at the old peoples home, the residents love me describing what my shadow puppets are. I thoughtI would include just two for you. These were done outside in the morning sun, it is little hard to get a sun shadow sharp, but I think if you use your imagination you will be able to work them out.
The first I call a gazelle, this is one of the hardest ones but keep an open mind.

100mm F10.0 1/1600sec ISO400
Next, I call this one the eagle see if you can work out why?

I hope you enjoyed.

Yeah, and I can swim across the Potomac too[:D] But I can see the Eagle, his head is facing the left and his wings are up in the air like his is about to take off.

Some interesting shadows on this thread, loving the ring pic, great heart shaped shadow, LOL, the word in the text that stands out is WHY, quite appropriate for a wedding shot [:D]

I know this assignment has closed, that's why I am pasting this now, because it is not my entry (famous shadow puppets), but a friend sent it to me and I thought it was just too cute not to show everyone.

Re: Assignment 19: Shadow Photography
I had two ideas for this assignment that I just didn't have the time or opportunity to shoot, thus I went to the archives. The first was going to be wine glasses trying to get the color from the wine in the shadow. Below, I finally had the opportunity last night, quickly, off hand:
7D, 100-400L @ 400 mm; 1/320; f/5.6 ISO 800

Can you think of a bigger "shadow?" [:D] Anyways, now, it is just for fun.
